Who this is for
- Parents and guardians of Grade 9 learners sitting KJSEA 2026 from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026.
- Families who want one honest tracker of the steps to Grade 10 in 2027: what has already happened, what comes next, and which dates are official versus rumour.
- Teachers and class representatives who field the "when will placement come out?" question every day.
When the last KJSEA paper ends on Friday 30 October 2026, the questions start immediately. When are the results? When does placement come out? Can we change schools? When do they report to Grade 10? Social media will offer confident answers to all of them within hours, and many of those answers will be wrong. This tracker sets out the road from KJSEA to Grade 10 one step at a time, and marks each step clearly as official, already done, or not yet announced.
Where the 2026 dates are not yet published, we show what happened in the first KJSEA cycle in 2025 as a guide to the likely order of events, not as a promise. The 2026 process has already changed in important ways from 2025, so assuming last year's rules can mislead you. If you want the scoring and the pathway thresholds in depth, read our explainer on KJSEA grading and senior school placement. This article is about the timeline and what to do at each step.
Information current as of Term 3, October 2026. We will update this tracker as KNEC and the Ministry of Education announce dates.
Key takeaways
- Already done: Grade 9 learners chose their senior schools, pathways and subject combinations in the Ministry's selection window, set for 24 August to 11 September 2026.
- Changed from 2025: learners chose 8 schools (3 from Cluster 1, 2 from Cluster 2, 2 from Cluster 3 and 1 from Cluster 4) instead of 12, and one or two subject combinations.
- Confirmed: KJSEA papers run 26 to 30 October 2026.
- Not yet announced: the 2026 results date, the placement release date, any review window, and the Grade 10 reporting date in 2027.
- For reference only: in 2025, results came on 11 December, a seven-day placement review began on 23 December, and Grade 10 learners reported on 12 January 2026.

Step by step: what has already happened
The school-based assessment is locked in
KJSEA is not only the October papers. According to KNEC's weighting as reported by The Star, the KJSEA final score is 60% the Grade 9 national assessment, 20% Grades 7 and 8 school-based assessment and 20% the learner's KPSEA performance. KNEC directed head teachers to confirm on the CBA portal, by 30 July 2026, that SBA scores for their candidates were uploaded. That means 40% of the score was settled before the first paper was opened. If you never confirmed with the school that your child's SBA and project scores went in, ask the class teacher now, in writing, before the school closes for the holiday. Our guide to the KJSEA 40% that parents must check lists exactly what to ask.
Selection is done, and the rules changed
This is the biggest difference between the two cycles, and the one most likely to confuse families who listened to older relatives or neighbours. According to Citizen Digital, Grade 9 learners were to select their senior schools, pathways and subject combinations between 24 August and 11 September 2026, with Basic Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa directing regional, county and sub-county education directors to oversee the process. Nation reported the key changes:
| Feature | 2025 cycle (first KJSEA) | 2026 cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Number of school choices | 12 | 8 |
| How choices were spread | Across school categories, boarding and day | 3 from Cluster 1, 2 from Cluster 2, 2 from Cluster 3, 1 from Cluster 4 |
| Subject combinations | Chosen with the pathway | Minimum 1, maximum 2 |
| Learners expected | About 1.13 million sat KJSEA | About 1.2 million |
Nation also reported that senior school learners take seven subjects: four compulsory (Mathematics, English, Kiswahili and Community Service Learning) and three determined by the pathway. That is why the one or two combinations your child chose in September matter so much. If you are not sure what was saved, ask the school for a printout or screenshot of the final submitted selection now. You will want it when placement comes out. Our explainers on the STEM pathway subjects and the Social Sciences pathway subjects help you check that the combination still makes sense.
What comes next, and what is not yet announced
Results
No date has been announced for KJSEA 2026 results. In the first cycle, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Ogamba, released KJSEA results on 11 December 2025. As Kenyans.co.ke reported, each subject was scored out of 8 points, with nine subjects making a total of 72, and candidates checked their results at kjsea.knec.ac.ke by entering their assessment number and name. Schools downloaded institutional results from the CBA portal. Expect a similar process, but follow KNEC's announcement for 2026.
When the result comes, remember one line from the 2025 release. Citizen Digital quoted the Ministry stating that "an Approaching Expectation grade is sufficient for learners to progress to Senior School pathways that require basic competencies." KJSEA has no fail mark. Every learner who sits it is placed in a senior school.
| Pathway | 2025 KJSEA learners showing potential |
|---|---|
| STEM | 59.09% |
| Arts and Sports Science | 48.73% |
| Social Sciences | 46.52% |
Read that chart the right way. It shows that many learners qualified for more than one pathway in 2025, which is why the choice of combination, and a realistic spread of schools, carried so much weight. It is not a forecast for 2026.
Placement
No 2026 placement date has been announced. In 2025, according to Citizen Digital, the placement exercise was set to begin the week after results and conclude by 20 December. Citizen later reported parents' anxiety over delays in Grade 10 placements. Both facts are useful. The first tells you placement followed results within days. The second tells you not to panic if a date slips: the system was new, and a delay did not mean a learner had been left out.
Review of placement
In 2025, the Ministry of Education gave a seven-day window, starting Tuesday 23 December, for families to seek a review of placement (Citizen Digital). Nation reported that the window ran from 23 to 29 December 2025, that learners reached the revision system through their Grade 9 schools or Ministry of Education offices, that an automated system matched preferences to performance and available places, and that the Ministry published lists of schools with vacancies by pathway and cluster. Learners could even switch pathway if they met the criteria and space existed. The reasons families gave for dissatisfaction, according to Citizen Digital, included high competition for limited places and a mismatch between preferences and assessment outcomes. Nobody has yet said whether a similar window will run in 2026, how long it would be, or what grounds would be accepted. Do not pay anyone who offers to "secure a review" or "change placement" for a fee. Reviews, when they run, go through official Ministry channels and your school.
Reporting to Grade 10
The first Grade 10 cohort was required to report by Monday 12 January 2026 (Nation). For 2027, no reporting date has been published. The Ministry's 2026 school calendar sets the long holiday from 26 October 2026 to 1 January 2027, but a Grade 10 reporting date for 2027 is a separate announcement. Budget and plan with that uncertainty in mind.
What to do at each step
- Before the school closes for the holiday: write down the assessment number, save a copy of the submitted selection (eight schools and the combinations), and confirm with the class teacher that all SBA scores were uploaded.
- In November: let the learner rest for a week, then follow a light bridging plan. Our guide to preparing for Grade 10 after placement lists what helps. Hold off on buying uniforms or paying deposits until placement is out.
- On results day: check the result only on KNEC's official portal. Read it subject by subject. If the result is lower than expected in a subject linked to the chosen combination, discuss it with the school before placement is released, not after.
- On placement day: check which school, which pathway and which combination. Compare with the saved selection.
- If something looks wrong: gather the evidence (the selection printout, the result, any medical or family circumstances) and contact the school head first. Watch for an official review window and its rules.
- Before reporting: read the admission letter carefully, confirm the fee structure directly with the school, and prepare documents.
Five questions to ask the school before it closes
The junior school is your most reliable source of information through the holiday, so use the last contact well. Ask: can we have a copy of the submitted selection showing the eight schools and the combinations? Were all of my child's Grades 7 and 8 school-based scores uploaded and verified? Which phone number or group will the school use to share results and placement news? Who at the school can help if placement looks wrong? And will the school help with any review process if one is announced? Write the answers down.
A case study: Otieno in Kisumu
Take Otieno, a Grade 9 learner in Kisumu. In September he chose a STEM combination and a Social Sciences combination, and eight schools across the four clusters. His father did not keep a copy. In December, a relative forwards a WhatsApp message saying placements are out on a "new portal" that charges a fee. Because the family knows that KNEC and the Ministry announce official channels and that the 2025 results were free to check, they ignore it and wait for the school's message. When placement comes, Otieno is in his second-choice cluster school on his STEM combination. Had something gone wrong, the family would have needed the selection printout to show what he chose, which is why saving it now matters more than anything you can do in December.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming 2025 rules apply. In 2026 learners chose 8 schools across four clusters, not 12.
- Treating 2025 dates as 2026 dates. 11 December and 12 January were last year's dates. They are a guide only.
- Paying "placement agents". No one can buy a place or a review. Our article on KJSEA scams shows how these schemes work.
- Buying everything before placement. Uniforms and fees differ by school.
- Ignoring the combination. Three of the seven senior school subjects come from it.
- Treating Approaching Expectation as failure. The Ministry said in 2025 that it is sufficient for pathways requiring basic competencies.
- Not keeping evidence. If you ever need a review, you will need the selection, the result and the assessment number.
Resources for the holiday and the move
The weeks between the last paper and placement are a good time to close gaps in Mathematics and English, which stay compulsory in senior school whatever the pathway. The KJSEA Complete Bundle for Grades 7 to 9 covers the junior school learning areas and works well as a review. To see how a combination fits your child, try the KJSEA pathway checker. Frequently asked questions
When will KJSEA 2026 results be released?
No date has been announced. In the first cycle, results were released on 11 December 2025. Follow KNEC's official channels and your school for the 2026 date.
Can my child still change their selected schools?
The selection window was set for 24 August to 11 September 2026. No further selection or revision window has been announced. In 2025, a review window came after placement. Watch for official guidance.
How many schools did Grade 9 learners choose in 2026?
Eight: three from Cluster 1, two from Cluster 2, two from Cluster 3 and one from Cluster 4, according to Nation's report on the 2026 selection.
Can a learner fail KJSEA and miss senior school?
No. Every learner who sits KJSEA is placed in a senior school. In 2025, the Ministry stated that an Approaching Expectation grade is sufficient for pathways requiring basic competencies.
When do learners report to Grade 10 in 2027?
The date has not been published. The first cohort reported on 12 January 2026.
How is the KJSEA score made up?
60% the Grade 9 national assessment, 20% Grades 7 and 8 school-based assessment and 20% KPSEA performance, according to KNEC's weighting as reported by The Star.
Where do I check placement?
Through the official channel the Ministry announces and through your school. Never through a paid link shared on social media.
Conclusion
The road from KJSEA 2026 to Grade 10 has eight steps. Four are behind you: the SBA scores are verified, the selection is done, and the rehearsal and papers are fixed. Four are ahead, and none of them has an official date yet: results, placement, any review window and reporting. Use the 2025 dates as a rough guide to the order of events, not as a calendar. Save the assessment number and the submitted selection today, check everything only through KNEC, the Ministry and the school, and keep this tracker open. We will update it the moment the dates are announced.
