When placement lands, families discover that the waiting was the easy part. A named school, a chosen pathway, and suddenly January looks close and unfamiliar. The good news: the weeks between placement and reporting day are the most controllable stretch of the whole transition, and the families who use them deliberately hand their children a quieter first term.
What to do, in order
| When | What | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Placement week | File the letter, results and documents in one folder | Admission day runs on paperwork produced in minutes |
| The same fortnight | Confirm the school's reporting requirements and dates | Requirements lists arrive late; chasing early beats queuing late |
| Before January | Close the two weakest Grade 9 gaps by evidence, not guilt | Grade 10 subjects assume Grade 9's floor |
| The last holiday weeks | Read ahead lightly in the pathway's core subjects | Familiarity on day one converts to confidence in week one |
The conversations that settle nerves
Two talks repay their minutes many times. First, the pathway talk: revisit why this combination was chosen, in the language of the child's own evidence, so the first hard week of a new subject does not reopen the whole question. The background for that conversation is in our placement guide and the pathways explainer. Second, the expectations talk: senior school marks start lower and climb; a first-term dip is the system recalibrating, not the child failing. Parents who say this in December spare everyone the February panic.
Closing the Grade 9 gaps
The KJSEA period exposes each candidate's two weakest areas with unusual honesty. Those two, not all nine, are the holiday work: a strand summary reread and a handful of marked questions weekly, from the same materials the revision season used. What waits on the other side is mapped in the Grade 10 subjects list, and this year's pioneer cohort's experience in our first-cohort guide.
When reporting day comes, the child arrives with the folder, the gaps narrowed, and a parent who has read the map. Materials for the whole of the new year ship in one download in the Grade 10 Complete Revision and Exam Kit, ready the day the timetable is: senior school rewards the family that arrived prepared, and preparation, unlike placement, is entirely in your hands.
