After Placement: Preparing Your Child for Grade 10

When placement lands, families discover that the waiting was the easy part. A named school, a chosen pathway, and suddenly January looks close and unfamiliar. The good news: the weeks between placement and reporting day are the most controllable stretch of the whole transition, and the families who use them deliberately hand their children a quieter first term.

This guide is for parents of Grade 9 learners moving into senior school. It covers the order of jobs after placement, the paperwork, the two conversations worth having, how to close learning gaps without turning the holiday into a punishment, and the habits that make the first term of Grade 10 calmer. What to do, in order

The admission folder

One folder, one place in the house, and everyone knows where it is. Exactly what a school asks for varies, so the school's own list is the final word. In practice, families are glad they had these ready:

• The placement letter, plus a printed copy of any online confirmation.
• The KJSEA result slip and the Grade 9 school report.
• Copies of the child's birth certificate and any identification the school requests.
• Recent passport-size photographs, if the list asks for them.
• Medical notes for any allergy or condition the school should know about.
• The school's requirements list, ticked off as items are bought.

Make two photocopies of every document and keep the originals in a plastic sleeve. On admission day the family that can hand over a copy in seconds spends its time settling the child, not searching bags.

The conversations that settle nerves

Two talks repay their minutes many times. First, the pathway talk: revisit why this combination was chosen, in the language of the child's own evidence, so the first hard week of a new subject does not reopen the whole question. If the placement was not the first choice

Some children land somewhere they did not choose, and the disappointment is real. Let them say so once, fully, and then move the talk to what they can control: how they start, which clubs they join, which subjects they want to be strong in by the end of the year. Closing the Grade 9 gaps

The KJSEA period exposes each candidate's two weakest areas with unusual honesty. Habits that decide the first term

• Sleep and mornings. Move wake-up time towards the school's timetable in the last two weeks of the holiday, not the night before.
• A daily review. Fifteen minutes each evening rereading that day's notes beats a long cram on Sunday.
• Asking early. Teach your child that asking a teacher in week two is normal; waiting until a test reveals the gap is expensive.
• For boarders. Practise the small things: labelling belongings, washing and managing pocket money, so the first weeks are about learning, not logistics.
• Your check-ins. Ask "what was hard this week and what did you do about it?" rather than "what did you score?"

Frequently asked questions

Should my child study Grade 10 content during the holiday?

Lightly, and only in the last few weeks. The priority is closing Grade 9 gaps, because Grade 10 builds on them. A little reading ahead in core pathway subjects helps confidence, but it should not replace rest.

Why are there so few Grade 10 past papers?

Because 2026 is the first year of CBC senior school, almost no past papers exist for Grade 10. Revision materials written for the new curriculum, rather than old secondary school papers, are the better match.

My child's first-term marks dropped. Should I worry?

A dip in the first term is common as subjects get harder and marking changes. Look at the trend across the term and at teacher comments. If the same weak area keeps showing, act on that one area rather than everything at once.
