Grade 10 Term 3: A Guide for the First Senior School Cohort

Kenya's first Grade 10 cohort has spent a year doing something no class did before it: learning senior school subjects nobody's older sibling could describe. Term 3 closes that pioneer year, and it carries more weight than its length suggests: consolidation of every strand taught, the community service learning project reaching its report stage, and the subject-level evidence that shapes Grade 11.

Term 3 2026 runs from 24 August to 23 October, nine weeks in all, and schools close on Friday 23 October. Nine weeks is not long when a whole year's strands need tying together, a project report needs writing, and end-of-year assessments sit somewhere in the middle. This guide sets out what the term contains, how a learner can plan it, and what parents of the pioneer class can do to help.

What Term 3 actually contains

Why this cohort has to work differently

Every earlier class in Kenyan secondary school had something this one does not: a pile of past papers, older cousins' notes, and teachers who had taught the same syllabus for years. Grade 10 in 2026 is the first CBC senior school cohort, so almost no past papers exist for it. That changes how revision has to work.

• Notes must be the learner's own. There is no older set to borrow, so the learner's exercise books and summaries are the main record of the year. Gaps in them are worth filling now while the teacher is still available to ask.
• Practice papers replace past papers. Well-built revision papers with marking schemes, set against the strands actually taught, do the job past papers did for earlier classes.
• Questions to teachers matter more. When nobody at home can explain a strand, the teacher is the only expert in reach. Encourage the learner to ask before closing day rather than over the holiday.

The community service learning project

The community service learning project deserves its own week. Assessors reward the distinction between activity and outcome: what changed in the community, evidenced by the log, photographs and the reflection, not merely what the class did. A project written up honestly, including what failed and what was learned, marks higher than a glossy account of unbroken success.

A simple order for writing the report from the log:

1. Start with the outcome. One or two sentences on what changed, for whom.
2. State the need. What the group noticed in the community before starting.
3. Summarise the activity. Briefly, with dates taken from the log, not from memory.
4. Show the evidence. Photographs, records and any feedback gathered.
5. Reflect honestly. What did not work, what the learner would change, and what they learned about themselves and the community.

If the log has gaps, the learner should say so in the report rather than fill them from memory. An honest gap reads better than an invented detail.

Practical help at home matters more than subject knowledge. Ask to see one marked paper a week and look for corrections, not just the score. Ask how the CSL project is going and what the log shows. And if a subject is clearly a struggle, help the learner write down a specific question for the teacher, which is far more useful than a general worry.

Should my child study during the holiday after 23 October?

Rest comes first after a pioneer year. A light look at next year's strand lists and a tidy-up of notes is enough; heavy study is better saved for the start of Grade 11.

What if my child is unhappy with a subject choice?

Raise it with the school before closing day, with specific reasons and the learner's marked work to hand. The school is the right place to ask what options exist.
