The move from Grade 9 to Grade 10 is the biggest structural change a Kenyan learner meets, and the cohort making it now has an unusual difficulty: there is no year group above them to copy. Nobody at their school has done it before.
This is what actually changes, and what does not.
What changes
| Junior school, Grades 7 to 9 | Senior school, from Grade 10 | |
|---|---|---|
| Subjects | A broad common set | Narrows, chosen around a pathway |
| Choice | Very little | Real, and consequential |
| Assessment | Builds toward KJSEA | Coursework and projects carry more weight |
| Past papers available | Some | Almost none. The cohort is the first |
Senior school organises around pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science. The pathway shapes which subjects a learner takes and, in time, which courses are open to them later.
What does not change
The core stays. English, Kiswahili and Mathematics continue for everyone regardless of pathway, so a learner who is weak in those does not escape them by choosing a pathway that feels easier. If revision time is short, those three remain the safest place to spend it.
Community Service Learning also continues, and it is assessed. It is not an extra.
The practical consequence for revision
Because there is no archive of past papers, a Grade 10 learner cannot revise the way older siblings did. Format-accurate practice papers matter more here than at any other level, simply because there is nothing else to practise on.
This is also why a Grade 10 learner should keep their own record of what has been assessed. Where an older system had a decade of precedent, this cohort is building the precedent.
Choosing a pathway honestly
- Start from what the learner is good at, not from what sounds prestigious. A learner placed in STEM who struggles with Mathematics will have three hard years.
- Check what the school actually offers. Not every school runs every pathway or every subject within one.
- Do not decide it in results week. That is the worst possible time: everyone is emotional and comparing.
What to do now
If your child is sitting KJSEA this October, the decision is weeks away rather than months. Our guide to preparing for Grade 10 subject by subject covers the pioneer cohort problem in more detail, and what happens after the last paper explains how the grade feeds into placement.
For the year itself, the Grade 10 Complete Revision and Exam Kit covers notes, revision papers, exams and marking schemes across subjects, and the CBCEduKenya Plus membership covers every grade in the library for families with more than one child.
