Grade 10 STEM Pathway: What You Actually Study (Math Isn't Even Compulsory)

STEM covers everything from pure sciences to technical trades like Electrical Technology and Building & Construction. And Mathematics is no longer compulsory, even in STEM. Here's the real subject breakdown.

Grade 10 STEM Pathway: What You Actually Study (Math Isn't Even Compulsory)

Once a Grade 9 learner is placed into the STEM pathway, the question most parents ask next is simple: what will they actually be studying? The pathway name tells you the direction, not the timetable. Here is the real subject structure, including one detail that surprises most families.

The Compulsory Core, and a Genuine Surprise

Every Senior School learner, regardless of pathway, takes 4 compulsory subjects: English, Kiswahili (or Kenyan Sign Language for deaf learners), Community Service Learning, and Physical Education. Under the rationalised structure that dropped Senior School from a heavier subject load to 7 total subjects, Mathematics is no longer a compulsory subject. It is now a pathway elective, most learners who want it take it within STEM, but it is not automatically assigned to every learner the way it was in the old system. If your Grade 9 learner is heading into STEM specifically to keep Mathematics as a serious subject, confirm it is actually on their subject list, don't assume it by default.

What STEM Actually Offers on Top of the Core

Beyond the 4 compulsory subjects, STEM learners choose their remaining subjects from a genuinely wide elective pool, wider than the "STEM" label alone suggests:

  • Pure Sciences: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Science
  • Applied Sciences: Agriculture, Computer Science, Home Science, Drawing and Design
  • Technical and Technology subjects: Aviation Technology, Building and Construction, Electrical Technology, Metal Technology, Power Mechanics, Wood Technology, Media Technology, Marine and Fisheries Technology

This is worth sitting with for a moment: STEM does not mean every learner does Physics, Chemistry and Biology. A learner drawn to Building and Construction or Electrical Technology is just as much a STEM learner as one heading toward pure sciences, and the two subject combinations lead to very different further-study and career routes. "My child is in STEM" tells you almost nothing on its own, the actual elective choices are what matter.

Why the Elective Choice Matters More Than the Pathway Label

Because STEM spans everything from theoretical physics to hands-on technical trades, the real decision point isn't "should my child do STEM," it's which specific electives within STEM fit their strengths and goals. A learner strong in the practical, applied sciences but weaker in abstract mathematics may be far better served by a Technical/Technology-heavy combination than by forcing Physics and Chemistry because "STEM sounds academic." Talk to the school directly about which specific subjects are being offered and which combinations are realistic given the learner's Grade 9 performance, not just which pathway they were placed into.

A Note on the Source of This Information

We're flagging honestly that the exact final elective list can vary slightly in how different sources describe it, since we were not able to access a primary KICD curriculum-design document directly while researching this piece, only consistent reporting across several credible Kenyan outlets. Confirm your specific school's actual subject offering list directly with them, since not every school will offer every technical/technology option listed above.
