Grade 10 Social Sciences Pathway: What You Actually Study

Social Sciences isn't the fallback pathway for learners who 'aren't STEM material.' History, Geography, Business Studies, Religious Education and more, the real subject breakdown.

Grade 10 Social Sciences Pathway: What You Actually Study

Social Sciences is often chosen by default, seen as the pathway for learners who "aren't STEM material," rather than a real, deliberate choice with its own genuine strengths and career routes. That framing undersells what's actually taught. Here is the real subject structure.

The Same Compulsory Core as Every Pathway

Social Sciences learners take the same 4 compulsory subjects as every other Senior School learner: English, Kiswahili (or Kenyan Sign Language), Community Service Learning, and Physical Education. Worth repeating here too since it surprises most parents: Mathematics is not automatically part of any pathway's compulsory core under the current rationalised structure. It is possible for a Social Sciences learner to take a lighter mathematics-adjacent path if their elective choices lean that way, so check the specific subject combination directly with the school rather than assuming.

What Social Sciences Actually Offers

Beyond the compulsory core, Social Sciences electives span a genuinely broad range:

  • History and Citizenship
  • Geography
  • Business Studies
  • Religious Education (CRE, IRE, or Hindu Religious Education)
  • Sociology and Philosophy
  • Languages and Literature, including foreign or indigenous language options

This combination genuinely prepares learners for law, business, public administration, journalism, diplomacy, social work, and a wide range of humanities-based university and TVET routes, not a fallback list for learners who didn't make STEM. A learner strong in analysis, writing, and understanding how systems and societies work, but less interested in laboratory sciences, is often better matched to Social Sciences by strength, not by process of elimination.

Business Studies Sits in Two Places, Worth Clarifying

One detail worth flagging directly: at Junior Secondary (Grade 7-9), Business Studies content was absorbed into Pre-Technical Studies as part of the 2024 rationalisation, it isn't a standalone Junior Secondary subject. At Senior School, Business Studies reappears as its own elective within the Social Sciences pathway. Parents who remember "Business Studies" from Junior Secondary coverage should know it comes back as a proper, standalone subject choice once a learner reaches Grade 10, if Social Sciences is the pathway.

Choosing Electives Within the Pathway

As with STEM, the pathway label is less important than the specific elective combination. A learner heading toward law or public policy benefits from History, Geography and Business Studies together. A learner more drawn to counselling, social work or theology benefits from a combination leaning on Religious Education, Sociology and Philosophy. Talk through the actual elective options with the school rather than treating "Social Sciences" as one fixed package, the pathway is a category, not a single course.

A Note on Sourcing

As with our STEM pathway breakdown, we could not verify this elective list against a primary KICD document directly, only against consistent reporting across several credible Kenyan education outlets. Confirm the exact subjects your specific school offers within this pathway directly with them.
