Predictive papers are the most misused revision resource in Kenya. A parent buys a set, the learner sits one on a Saturday, glances at the answers, feels either pleased or crushed, and the paper goes into a drawer. Nothing was diagnosed and nothing was repaired, so nothing moved. This article sets out the method that makes predictive papers, ours or anyone else's, actually change marks: a six-week loop of diagnose, repair and re-sit that runs from Monday 14 September to Sunday 25 October 2026, the Sunday before both the KJSEA and KPSEA written papers begin.

What predictive papers are for (and what they are not)
A predictive paper is a complete practice paper weighted towards the sub-strands most likely to be assessed, judged from the KICD rationalised designs, the KNEC 2025 sample papers and the places where learners are known to lose marks. Ours follow the exact KNEC paper code, sections, mark allocation and time allowed: KJSEA Mathematics 903 as 20 multiple-choice questions for 20 marks plus 20 structured questions for 80 marks in 2 hours, English 901/1 as 50 multiple-choice items, Integrated Science 905/1 as 30 multiple-choice plus structured questions for 70 marks, and so on through all nine learning areas. KPSEA papers are multiple choice throughout, 30 questions for Mathematics, English and Kiswahili and 40 for Integrated Science and Creative Arts and Social Studies.
Two honest limits. First, a predictive paper is a set of original practice items. It is not an official KNEC paper and it is not a leaked one; anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something you should not buy. Second, sitting a paper does not by itself teach anything. It measures. The teaching happens afterwards, in the repair, and the measuring only counts if the paper was sat under real conditions and marked honestly. The loop: diagnose, repair, re-sit
Everything in this article hangs on one loop with three stages. Run it once per subject per set and the six weeks organise themselves.
- Diagnose. Sit a full paper to the KNEC time, at a table, with nothing else open. Mark it from the scheme the same evening. Do not stop at the score: write every lost mark into the error log against the sub-strand it came from and the reason it went.
- Repair. Take the logged sub-strands in order of marks lost. For each one, read the notes for that sub-strand only, close them, redo the lost question from memory, then do ten fresh items of the same kind. A sub-strand is repaired when the learner can do the item with the notes closed, not when it has been reread.
- Re-sit. Sit a second paper for the same subject, again timed. Mark it, log it, and compare the two logs sub-strand by sub-strand. Marks lost in new places are normal. Marks lost in the same places tell you the repair did not take, and that sub-strand goes back to the top of the list.
The loop is the reason the KJSEA sets come in pairs and the KPSEA papers come in threes. Set 1 or Paper 1 is the diagnosis. The last set is the re-sit. What sits between them is the only part that changes marks, and it is the part most households skip because it is slower and less dramatic than sitting another paper.
Why the answer key must be physically out of reach
There is a difference between checking and marking, and it decides whether a predictive paper is worth the paper it is printed on.
Checking is looking at an answer while the paper is still open, to see whether you got it. It feels harmless and it destroys the measurement. The moment a learner glances at an answer, the item stops testing recall and starts testing recognition, which is exactly the trap the evidence on revision warns about: rereading and recognising feel like knowing and are not. Worse, the checked answer becomes a hint for the next question, so the score at the end describes a paper the learner did not really sit.
Marking happens after the last question, after the timer, with the scheme in hand and a red pen. It produces two things: a score, and a list of exactly where marks went. The first is for morale. The second is the whole point.

"Out of reach" means what it says. If the papers are printed, print Books 1 and 2 and leave Book 3 unprinted. If the household works from a phone or laptop, the bundles deliver each subject's three books as separate PDFs, so the answer booklet can live on the parent's phone and nowhere else. If only the single combined PDF is open, Book 3 starts on its own divider page: the rule is that nobody scrolls past that page until the paper is finished and the timer has stopped. A learner who marks their own paper can do it honestly, but only after the paper is closed and only with the scheme, never the paper, open first.
How to mark predictive papers like an examiner
Most parents mark too kindly, and most learners mark themselves too kindly. An examiner does not know your child and does not care how hard they worked. The nearer home marking gets to that standard, the more useful the log becomes. Five habits get you most of the way.
1. Marks sit on points, not on effort
A marking scheme is a list of marking points. Each mark is attached to one specific thing: a value, a fact, a step, a named term. An answer that wanders for five lines and contains the point earns the mark. An answer that is neat, confident and long, and does not contain the point, earns nothing. When marking, hunt for the point in the scheme, tick it where it appears, and ignore everything else on the line.
2. Method marks are real marks
In structured Mathematics and science questions, schemes typically split a question into method marks and accuracy marks. Take a 3-mark item on simultaneous linear equations: one mark for a correct method to eliminate a variable, one for the first value, one for the second. A learner who sets up the elimination correctly and then slips in the arithmetic keeps the method mark and loses the two accuracy marks. A learner who writes only the two final values with no working is at the mercy of both being right; the moment one is wrong there is nothing left to award. 3. Accept alternatives, but only true ones
Schemes carry "accept" notes: accept 0.5, one half or 50 percent for the same value; accept a correctly labelled sketch in place of a description. Apply them. What you must not do is invent your own: "she meant the right thing" is not an accept note. If an answer is not on the scheme and is not an exact equivalent of what is, it is a zero, and it goes in the log. Harsh marking at home is safe, because the worst that happens is an extra repair. Generous marking at home is dangerous, because the gap shows up for the first time on 26 October.
4. Read the command word before the answer
The command word decides how many marks an answer can possibly earn. State, name and list pay one mark for one correct fact, no reason required. Explain and give a reason pay for the "because": the fact alone usually earns half or nothing. Describe wants features or a sequence, in order. Calculate wants working and a unit. Show that gives you the answer in the question, so every mark is for the steps. When a learner writes a one-line answer to an explain question, mark it as the scheme says and write "explain answered as state" in the log; it is one of the most repairable mistakes there is, because it is a habit rather than a gap.
5. Multiple choice: mark the reason, not just the letter
For the KPSEA papers, and for the multiple-choice sections of the KJSEA papers, marking the letter takes two minutes. The diagnosis is in the wrong letter chosen. Every distractor is built from a specific mix-up: in a Grade 6 Integrated Science item on changes of state, "evaporation" sits beside "condensation" because learners swap them. The separate answer booklet names the sub-strand tested and gives a one-line reason for each item, so the log entry is the mix-up, not the letter. Note also any item where the answer was changed: over a few papers you learn whether your child's first instinct or second thought is the better one, and that is worth knowing before the day. The error log: the one document that matters
Copy this table into an exercise book, one double page per subject. It has seven columns and a strict rule: every lost mark gets a row, even a one-mark multiple-choice item, and the "fixed on" column stays blank until the learner has done that kind of item with the notes closed.

The four reason codes do real work. K is a knowledge gap: the learner did not know it, so the repair is the notes. M is method or wording: the learner knew it and lost marks in the doing, so the repair is practice under marking-scheme rules. C is careless: misread, wrong unit, diameter for radius, so the repair is a checking habit in the last ten minutes. T is time: the marks were never attempted, so the repair is pacing, not content. A log full of K rows and a log full of T rows call for completely different weeks, and a score alone cannot tell them apart.
Once a week, sort the log by sub-strand and count marks lost per sub-strand across every paper. The top three are next week's repair list. Timing discipline: sit to the KNEC time allowed, no pausing
An untimed predictive paper measures what a learner knows. A timed one measures what they can produce on the day, which is the only number KNEC will ever see. So every full paper is sat to the exact time allowed on the KNEC timetable, at a table, with a visible clock, and the timer does not stop for a phone, a snack or a question to Mum. If it stops, the paper is untimed and the T column becomes meaningless. On the day itself, candidates are seated 15 minutes before the 8.30 a.m. start and there is no extra time; the school's rehearsal on Friday 23 October is where those logistics are confirmed, and the official timetables are on the KNEC timetables page.
The time allowed also gives you a pace per mark, which is the most practical number a candidate can carry into an exam room. Divide the minutes by the marks and you know how long a four-mark question deserves.

The six-week plan: 14 September to 25 October
The plan below runs the loop for two candidates at once: a Grade 9 with nine learning areas and two sets of predictive papers, and a Grade 6 with five papers and three of each. The KJSEA two-paper subjects (English, Kiswahili and Integrated Science) count as two sittings each, so a full KJSEA set is twelve sittings and about 19 and a half hours of writing time; a full KPSEA round is five sittings and 6 hours 40 minutes. Weeks run Monday to Sunday. If the school sets its own mock in a subject during weeks 5 or 6, count it as that subject's Set 2 or Paper 3 and skip ours.

Recommended hours per week by activity
How many hours should this take? The figures below are our recommendations for a Grade 9 candidate who is still attending school, and they are recommendations, not research findings. They assume evenings and weekends, and they count rest deliberately, because a rest block that is not on the timetable is the first thing to be stolen. "Timed papers" is writing time. "Diagnose" is marking and the error log. "Repair" is notes and fresh questions. Every week lands between 19 and 23 hours; anything much above that is usually rereading dressed up as work.

Two things to notice. The repair weeks are the heaviest, not the paper weeks, which is the opposite of how most households spend their hours. And the Grade 6 candidate runs at roughly half to two-thirds of the Grade 9 load, with shorter blocks and a parent in the room; an 11-year-old sitting a 1 hour 40 minute Integrated Science paper needs a rest day after it, not another paper.
The week of the rehearsal
Both rehearsals fall on Friday 23 October, in the middle of week 6, and the week wants a shape of its own. Monday to Wednesday hold the last timed papers: the Grade 6 dress rehearsal in the KNEC order, the Grade 9's remaining Set 2 sittings. Thursday is for marking, logging and one calm read of the whole error log from the first page, noticing how much of the "fixed on" column is now filled. No new sub-strand is opened after Wednesday; anything still unrepaired on Thursday is a known weakness to manage on the day, not a project for the weekend.
Friday is the school's rehearsal, where candidate details, seating and the timetable are confirmed. Nothing timed at home that evening. Saturday is thirty minutes at most: the formula sheet and the revision checklist at the end of each set of notes for the Grade 9, pencils, a rubber and the assessment number for the Grade 6, and the bag packed for Monday. Sunday is rest, a proper meal and an early night. Case study: the Mwangi household in Ruiru
Take the Mwangis of Ruiru, a hypothetical family but a familiar one. Njeri is in Grade 9. Her brother Baraka is in Grade 6. Their mother, a nurse on shifts, is not a teacher and had never marked a paper before September. She kept Book 3 for both children on her phone and printed Books 1 and 2 for each of them. On Wednesday 16 September Njeri sat Mathematics 903 Set 1 at the dining table, two hours by the kitchen clock, calculator allowed, phone in her mother's bag. Her mother marked it that night from the scheme, refusing herself half marks: 61 out of 100. The score went at the top of the page, and the twelve rows under it mattered more. Three rows were indices and logarithms, all standard form; two were time, distance and speed, both a units mix-up; four were multiple-choice items lost in the last ten minutes, coded T.
Baraka's KPSEA Mathematics Paper 1 the day before told a shorter story: 21 out of 30, with the last four items guessed because the 1 hour 20 minutes ran out, and three wrong choices on fractions that all sat on the same distractor. By Sunday 27 September both children had a ranked log. Weeks 3 to 5 were repair: Njeri did two sub-strands a night from the notes, standard form first, and practised the 25-minute rule for the multiple-choice section on Saturday mornings; Baraka did one sub-strand a day with his mother beside him and ten timed questions in 25 minutes twice a week. When Njeri's Set 2 Mathematics paper came on Wednesday 14 October, it lost marks in different places: none in standard form, one in time, distance and speed, and the T rows had gone. The log did not tell the Mwangis what KNEC would report in November. It told them which pages had done their job and which two sub-strands still needed the teacher on Monday.
Common mistakes with predictive papers
- Sitting the paper with the key in the same file. "Just checking one" happens every time. Separate the PDFs or stop at the divider page, and let the parent hold the answers.
- Marking kindly. Half marks the scheme does not allow, "she meant that", a tick for a long answer with no marking point in it. Every soft mark at home is a hard surprise on the day.
- Logging the score, not the sub-strand. "Maths 61" tells you nothing about Monday's repair. "Standard form, 3 marks, method" does.
- Repairing by rereading the whole book. The log says three sub-strands; the learner rereads all five strands and feels productive. Repair the named rows, then prove it with the notes closed.
- Pausing the clock. A timed paper with a break in it is an untimed paper with a story. Sit to the KNEC time or do not call it timed.
- Re-sitting too early or too late. Set 2 in week 3 measures the same gaps as Set 1; Set 2 the night before the rehearsal leaves no time to act on it. Wednesday 14 October is the earliest sensible start for the Grade 9 second set.
- Reading guide bands as KNEC boundaries. The bands in the answer booklet say what to do next. They are not KNEC boundaries and they do not convert into the 8 points per learning area on the KJSEA result. Written papers carry 60 percent of the outcome and school-based assessment 40 percent; the weighting explainer shows how they combine.
- Running the Grade 6 like the Grade 9. Same hours, same expectations, same silence at the table. An 11-year-old needs shorter blocks, a rest day after every long paper and a parent who explains the reason column out loud.

What should we do if the first predictive paper score is very low?
Be pleased that you found out in September rather than in November, then ignore the score and read the rows. A low score made of T rows is a pacing problem, fixed in a fortnight. A low score made of K rows across many sub-strands means the repair weeks start with the notes rather than with questions, and the weakest three subjects get the hours first. Compare Set 2 with Set 1 by sub-strand, not by total.

For structured questions, yes, as an untimed repair check in week 4 with the notes closed: if the learner can now earn the marks they lost, the row is fixed. As a timed measurement, no, because a familiar paper flatters. The timed re-sit should be a fresh paper, which is why the sets come in pairs and the KPSEA papers in threes.
When should timed papers stop before the rehearsal on 23 October?
Wednesday 21 October for the Grade 6 dress rehearsal and Thursday 22 October for the last Grade 9 Set 2 paper, marked the same evening. From Thursday evening the work is reading the log, not sitting papers. Friday is the school's rehearsal, the weekend is rest, and the first written paper is Monday 26 October at 8.30 a.m. with candidates seated fifteen minutes early.
