KPSEA 2026: Dates, the Five Papers, and the 10-Week Plan (Updated Weekly)

The short answer: KPSEA (the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment) is the national Grade 6 assessment that closes Upper Primary. In 2026 the rehearsal is Friday 23 October and the papers run Monday 26 to Wednesday 28 October, morning sessions from 8:00 a.m. and afternoon sessions from 2:00 p.m. It is not a pass-fail exam: every learner proceeds to Grade 7. Its job is to give a national picture of learning and feed the placement composite for Junior School. Your child has roughly ten weeks; a calm 40-minutes-a-day routine from now covers everything.

The 2026 KPSEA timeline

The five papers, and the learning areas inside them

KPSEA is sat as five papers, and two of them combine several learning areas, which is exactly where unprepared candidates get surprised:

1. Mathematics
2. English
3. Kiswahili (or Kenyan Sign Language)
4. Integrated Science: covers Science and Technology together with content from Agriculture and Home Science
5. Creative Arts and Social Studies: covers Social Studies, Religious Education and Creative Arts in one paper

Revision that only drills Mathematics and English leaves two whole papers, nearly half the assessment, unpractised. The combined papers deserve equal seats in the rotation.

What KPSEA is for (a calm word to parents)

KPSEA does not gate your child's progress: Grade 7 comes regardless. The scores inform Junior School placement and give you the first objective national picture of where your child stands. That reframes the goal: not cramming to "pass", but walking in with no paper your child has never practised. The children who struggle in that room are rarely the ones who knew the least; they are the ones meeting timed papers for the first time.

The 10-week plan in one paragraph each

Weeks 1-2, find the gaps: one untimed paper per KPSEA paper (all five), marked together, each strand labelled solid, shaky or missing. Weeks 3-6, rotate: one paper per weekday evening, 40 minutes: 20 on notes for one shaky sub-strand, 20 on questions. Friday repeats the weakest. Weeks 7-8, timed: one timed paper per area weekly, marked same day against the marking scheme. Weeks 9-10, light touch: error-list review, early nights, nothing new after the rehearsal on 23 October.

Materials for the full rotation

Each area has a complete revision course (notes, revision questions, marking guidance, KSH 150): Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Science and Technology, and Social Studies and Religious Education. Frequently asked questions

Does a low KPSEA score hold my child back?

No. Every learner transitions to Grade 7. The score informs placement and tells you honestly where support is needed as Junior School begins.

What should we do on rehearsal day (23 October)?

Treat it seriously and lightly at once: correct uniform, know the room, listen to the instructions. It exists so that nothing on Monday is a surprise. No revision that evening; sleep wins more marks than one more paper.

Are the afternoon papers really at 2:00 p.m. with no extra time?

Yes, per KNEC's published timetable: morning sessions 8:00 a.m., afternoon 2:00 p.m., and no additional time. Practising at those actual hours in weeks 7-8 is a quiet advantage.

My child is strong in class but freezes in tests. What helps?

Timed practice in small doses, marked kindly and together. Freeze is unfamiliarity wearing a scary mask; after the fourth timed paper at the kitchen table, the room loses its power.
