Who this is for

  • Parents of Grade 6 learners who sat KPSEA 2026 from 26 to 28 October and are now searching for "KPSEA results 2026 release date".
  • Families who want to know how results have actually reached parents in past years, so they are not caught out by rumours or paid links.
  • Grade 7 teachers and head teachers who will be asked "where is the report?" in January.

KPSEA 2026 results have no official release date yet. KNEC has not announced one as of 31 October 2026, and we will not invent one. What we can give you is something more useful than a guess: the real pattern from the four KPSEA cycles so far, how parents received the report each time, what the report shows and does not show, and a simple plan for the day it lands. Every date below comes from KNEC statements or major Kenyan newspapers, linked at the end.

If you want to understand where the KPSEA score goes after it is released, including the 20 percent it later contributes to KJSEA, our guide to KJSEA and KPSEA weighting explains it. This page is about the when and the how.

Information current as of 31 October 2026. When KNEC announces the 2026 release date and access route, that announcement takes priority over everything here.

  • No 2026 date has been announced. Anyone giving you a specific day is guessing.
  • Every KPSEA release so far has come in January, not December: 17 January 2023, January 2024 (reported 19 January), early January 2025 (reported 7 January) and 13 January 2026.
  • In the 2025 cycle parents checked the report free on kpsea.knec.ac.ke with the assessment number and at least one registered name. Schools used the CBA portal.
  • The genuine report shows a performance level per subject (Exceeding, Meeting, Approaching or Below Expectation), not marks. KNEC called a viral slip with percentages fake in February 2026.
  • KPSEA has no pass or fail. Every Grade 6 learner moves on to Grade 7.

KPSEA 2026 results: when they have come in past years

KPSEA was first sat in November 2022. Since then there have been four releases, and the pattern is clear enough to plan around, as long as you treat it as history rather than a promise.

KPSEA cycle Results released How results reached families Learners
2022 (first sitting)17 January 2023, announced by CS Ezekiel Machogu (KNEC had earlier said 16 January)Schools accessed reports on the KNEC portalAbout 1.25 to 1.29 million (sources differ)
2023January 2024 (The Star reported the release on 19 January 2024)Head teachers with CBA portal logins; parents went through the school1,282,574
2024Early January 2025 (The Standard reported it on 7 January 2025; some outlets said 6 January)CBA portal for schools; parents could check with the index number and name1,313,913
202513 January 2026Parents on kpsea.knec.ac.ke; schools on cba.knec.ac.ke1,298,089 registered
2026Not yet announcedTo be confirmed by KNEC1,380,463 registered (Capital FM, reporting KNEC)

Three lessons follow from that table.

  1. January is the pattern. In none of the four cycles did KPSEA reports reach parents before Christmas. In the 2023 cycle, the Cabinet Secretary had said results would follow the KCSE release within two weeks, and KNEC had said they would be ready before Grade 7 began, yet the release was reported only on 19 January 2024. In the 2025 cycle, too, the release came on 13 January 2026. So early announcements have tended to be optimistic.
  2. Access has moved closer to parents. In the early cycles, head teachers were the gatekeepers. By the 2025 cycle, parents could open the report themselves on a dedicated KPSEA portal.
  3. Your child will likely be in Grade 7 before the report arrives. That is normal. KPSEA does not decide junior school placement, so nothing waits on the result.

The practical meaning for 2026: plan the December holiday without the result in mind, expect news in the new year, and listen only for an announcement from KNEC or the Ministry of Education.

Quick glossary

  • KPSEA: the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment, the national assessment at the end of Grade 6, run by KNEC.
  • Assessment number: the learner's unique KNEC number, needed to check the report. Keep it safe.
  • Individual learner performance report: the official KPSEA result for one learner, showing a level per subject.
  • CBA portal: KNEC's Competency-Based Assessment portal at cba.knec.ac.ke, used by schools.
  • KILEA: a KNEC assessment for some learners with special needs. In the 2025 cycle its reports went through schools, not the online portal.

How parents received KPSEA results in the 2025 cycle

The most recent cycle is the best guide to what 2026 may look like, because KNEC set up a dedicated parent route for it. When KNEC released the 2025 KPSEA and KILEA performance reports on 13 January 2026, it told parents of KPSEA candidates to use the 2025 KPSEA results portal. Capital FM's report of KNEC's guidelines described the steps:

  1. Go to the KNEC KPSEA results portal (kpsea.knec.ac.ke for the 2025 cycle).
  2. Enter the learner's assessment number.
  3. Enter at least one of the learner's registered names, spelt as registered.
  4. Accept the privacy and access notice.
  5. Search, then view, save or print the report.

Schools were told they could access individual learner performance reports on the CBA portal at cba.knec.ac.ke. KILEA reports were distributed through schools rather than the online portal. KNEC also urged the public to rely only on its official platforms and not to share personal examination details on unofficial websites or social media.

For 2026, KNEC may use the same portal, a renamed one, or a different route. Do not bookmark a link from a WhatsApp group. When the release is announced, type the address from KNEC's own announcement, or ask the school.

What the KPSEA report shows, and what it does not

The KPSEA individual report is short. According to Kenyans.co.ke's description of the genuine January 2026 report, it lists the subjects the learner took, each subject or paper code, and a performance level such as Exceeding Expectation, Meeting Expectation, Approaching Expectation or Below Expectation. It does not show raw marks out of 100, a total, a mean grade or a class position.

On the genuine report Not on the genuine report
Learner's name and assessment numberPercentage marks per subject
Each subject taken, with its codeAn overall total or "mean grade"
A performance level for each subjectA rank in the class, county or country
(School report, separately) areas where the school's learners struggledA pass or fail verdict

That matters because fake slips circulate every year. In February 2026, a slip showing per-subject percentages for the 2025 KPSEA went viral with the caption "8:4:4 is back". KNEC dismissed it on its social media pages, warning the public to "beware of agents of fake news and misinformation." If someone sends you a KPSEA slip with marks out of 100, it did not come from KNEC.

The four levels themselves are explained in depth in our BE, AE, ME and EE parent guide, and our walkthrough on how to read the KJSEA and KPSEA result slip includes a worked example.

A worked example: reading one report in five minutes

Take Baraka, a Grade 6 learner in a day school in Kilifi (a made-up example, not a real report). Suppose his KPSEA 2026 report shows:

  • Mathematics: Approaching Expectation
  • English: Meeting Expectation
  • Kiswahili: Meeting Expectation
  • Integrated Science: Exceeding Expectation
  • Creative Arts and Social Studies: Meeting Expectation

A quick reading might be "average". A careful reading is more useful. Baraka is secure in four of five areas and strong in science, with one clear gap in Mathematics. His parents now have one specific job for Term 1 of Grade 7: ask the Grade 7 Mathematics teacher which strands to work on, and give Mathematics two short sessions a week at home. They also have a good conversation starter: his science strength is worth encouraging, because junior school science builds on it. Nothing in the report changes which school he attends or whether he moves to Grade 7. It simply tells the family where to put effort.

What to do on KPSEA results day

When KNEC announces the release, a calm routine helps more than refreshing a website at midnight.

  1. Confirm the announcement is real. Check KNEC's official website or verified social media, or a major newspaper quoting KNEC. A forward with no source is not an announcement.
  2. Find the assessment number. It is on school records and earlier KNEC documents. If you cannot find it, ask the Grade 6 school, which keeps it.
  3. Use only the official route. In the 2025 cycle, checking was free on KNEC's portal. Never pay an agent or a "results checker".
  4. Expect a slow website on day one. Portals are often busy at release. Try again in the evening or the next morning rather than paying someone who claims a faster route.
  5. Save and print. Keep a copy with the birth certificate and school records. The assessment number stays with your child through junior school.
  6. Read it with your child, subject by subject. Start with what went well.
  7. Share it with the Grade 7 class teacher. A two-minute conversation saves the teacher weeks of guessing.

If something looks wrong

Mistakes are rare but possible: a misspelt name, a missing subject, or a level that does not match anything the school has seen. Go to the school first, with the assessment number and a printed copy. The school can view the learner's record on the CBA portal and raise a query with KNEC through official channels. Do not post your child's report or assessment number in a public group asking for help, and never pay anyone who claims they can "upgrade" a level. Our explainer on KNEC's KPSEA rules and possible result cancellation covers the irregularities that can affect a result.

Common mistakes parents make about KPSEA results

  • Believing a December date on social media. No KPSEA cycle so far has released results to parents in December.
  • Paying for result-checking services. The 2025 route was free on KNEC's portal.
  • Waiting for the report before preparing for Grade 7. Grade 7 starts in January whatever the result says.
  • Trusting slips with marks. The genuine report shows levels, not percentages.
  • Losing the assessment number. Write it down today and keep it with the birth certificate.
  • Treating Approaching Expectation as failure. It means "on the way". It is a guide for where to help.
  • Comparing with neighbours. The levels describe your child against the curriculum, not against another child.

Using the holiday while you wait

The KPSEA report is weeks away, but the December holiday has already begun. You do not need the result to know your child's weaker areas: their Grade 6 school reports and teacher comments already show them. A light routine of reading and Mathematics two or three times a week, plenty of rest and some family responsibility is the best bridge into junior school. Our guide to the move from Grade 6 to junior secondary explains what changes, and what Grade 7 looks like for parents gives a sense of the year ahead.

If you want structured review material for the Grade 4 to 6 work that Grade 7 builds on, the KPSEA Complete Bundle is organised by learning area, and the KPSEA 2026 hub collects our guides in one place. When your child gets stuck on a concept, Somo, our CBC AI tutor, can explain it step by step.

Frequently asked questions

When will KPSEA 2026 results be released?

KNEC has not announced a date as of 31 October 2026. In every cycle so far, KPSEA results were released in January: 17 January 2023, January 2024, early January 2025 and 13 January 2026.

How do I check KPSEA results?

For the 2025 cycle, parents used kpsea.knec.ac.ke, entering the assessment number and at least one registered name. Schools used the CBA portal. Check KNEC's announcement for the 2026 route.

Is there an SMS code for KPSEA results?

KNEC's January 2026 guidance pointed parents to the online portal and schools to the CBA portal. If KNEC announces an SMS service for 2026, it will be in the official release notice. Treat any other code with caution.

Does the KPSEA report show marks?

No. The genuine report shows a performance level per subject. KNEC called a viral 2025 slip with percentage marks fake.

Can my child fail KPSEA?

No. KPSEA has no pass or fail mark, and every Grade 6 learner proceeds to Grade 7.

Why does the release take until January?

KNEC has not given a single official reason. The KPSEA score combines school-based assessment from Grades 4, 5 and 6 with the October papers, and in the 2023 cycle KNEC's chief executive explained the delay publicly in November. Whatever the reason, the pattern has been January.

My child has special needs and sat a different assessment. Where is the report?

In the 2025 cycle, KILEA reports were distributed through schools rather than the online portal. Ask the school.

Conclusion

KPSEA 2026 results do not have a release date yet, and the honest advice is to stop looking for one in December. Four cycles of history point to January, with parents in the latest cycle checking reports free on KNEC's portal using the assessment number and a registered name. The report will show a level in each subject, not marks, and it will not decide anything about Grade 7. Keep the assessment number safe, ignore paid links and fake slips, read the report subject by subject when it arrives, and share it with the Grade 7 teacher. We will update this page the day KNEC announces the 2026 release.
