KPSEA Integrated Science: The Longest Paper of the Three Days

KPSEA Integrated Science runs 8.30 to 10.10 on Tuesday 27 October. At 1 hour 40 it is the longest single paper of the three days, and Kiswahili follows at 11.10 the same morning.

That combination, the longest paper followed by another an hour later, is the hardest session of the week for most Grade 6 candidates. It is worth practising as a pair.

What the paper draws on

Integrated Science at upper primary pulls together strands a child has met across Grades 4, 5 and 6 rather than one year's work. Expect questions on living things and their environment, the human body, materials and their properties, energy in its various forms, and simple investigations.

The questions are all multiple choice, but many are applied: a described situation followed by options, rather than a definition to recall. That rewards understanding over memorising.

Investigation questions, which children find hardest

A common pattern describes a simple experiment and asks what it shows, what was being tested, or what should have been kept the same. The vocabulary is worth teaching directly:

• The thing you deliberately change.
• The thing you measure.
• The things you keep the same so the test is fair.

Children who can name those three things answer investigation questions quickly. Children who cannot tend to guess, and the options are written to catch exactly that.

Pacing 100 minutes

Three passes, as with every KPSEA paper: about 40 minutes clearing what is known on sight, about 45 on what needs thought, and the final 15 filling every blank. There is no negative marking, so a blank is a mark handed back.

The single most useful instruction: if a question has taken more than ninety seconds, leave it and come back.

Then Kiswahili at 11.10
