KPSEA Integrated Science: The Longest Paper of the Three Days

KPSEA Integrated Science runs 8.30 to 10.10 on Tuesday 27 October. At 1 hour 40 it is the longest single paper of the three days, and Kiswahili follows at 11.10 the same morning.

That combination, the longest paper followed by another an hour later, is the hardest session of the week for most Grade 6 candidates. It is worth practising as a pair.

This guide covers what the paper draws on, the question style that trips children up, how to pace 100 minutes, and how to rehearse the Tuesday morning at home so the real one feels familiar. It is written for parents, but a Grade 6 learner can read it too.

The three mornings

What the paper draws on

Integrated Science at upper primary pulls together strands a child has met across Grades 4, 5 and 6 rather than one year's work. Expect questions on living things and their environment, the human body, materials and their properties, energy in its various forms, and simple investigations.

The questions are all multiple choice, but many are applied: a described situation followed by options, rather than a definition to recall. That rewards understanding over memorising.

Turning the strands into revision

Because the paper spans three years, older topics deserve a look too. A child who covered a topic well in Grade 4 may have forgotten the details, and a short refresh is often all it takes.

Investigation questions, which children find hardest

A common pattern describes a simple experiment and asks what it shows, what was being tested, or what should have been kept the same. The vocabulary is worth teaching directly:

• The thing you deliberately change.
• The thing you measure.
• The things you keep the same so the test is fair.

Children who can name those three things answer investigation questions quickly. Children who cannot tend to guess, and the options are written to catch exactly that.

Practice questions

These are practice items written in the KPSEA multiple choice style. They are not official KNEC questions.

1. Practice: A learner puts the same amount of water in three identical tins and places them in sun, shade and indoors. After two hours she measures how much water is left. What is she changing?
   A. The amount of water   B. The type of tin   C. Where each tin is placed   D. The time she waits
   Answer: C. The water, tins and time are kept the same so the test is fair.
2. Practice: In the same test, what is she measuring?
   A. The amount of water left   B. The size of the tins   C. The colour of the water   D. The number of tins
   Answer: A.
3. Practice: Which of these materials would be best for the handle of a cooking pot?
   A. Copper   B. Wood   C. Iron   D. Aluminium
   Answer: B. Wood does not let heat pass through easily, so the handle stays cool to hold.

Pacing 100 minutes

Three passes, as with every KPSEA paper: about 40 minutes clearing what is known on sight, about 45 on what needs thought, and the final 15 filling every blank. There is no negative marking, so a blank is a mark handed back.

The single most useful instruction: if a question has taken more than ninety seconds, leave it and come back.

Stamina is a skill too

A hundred minutes is a long time for an eleven or twelve year old to concentrate. Many children start strongly and fade in the second half, rushing the last questions. Build stamina in the weeks before by sitting at least two full-length practice papers in one go, at a table, with no breaks and no phone nearby. The first attempt shows where concentration dips; the second usually goes better.

Then Kiswahili at 11.10

A home rehearsal of the Tuesday morning

1. Start at 8.30 with a full Integrated Science practice paper, timed at 100 minutes.
2. Stop at 10.10. Take a real hour off: a snack, water, a short walk, no revision.
3. Start a Kiswahili practice paper at 11.10, timed at one hour.
4. Mark both papers later in the day, not straight away, and talk about how the second paper felt.

Frequently asked questions

Is Integrated Science the same as Science and Technology?

Yes, for KPSEA purposes the Science and Technology paper is the Integrated Science paper. You may see both names used in notes and practice materials.

Should my child answer questions in order?

Not necessarily. The three-pass method means answering the easy ones first, then returning to the harder ones, and filling every blank before time ends.

What should my child eat before the Tuesday paper?

A normal, familiar breakfast and water. A small snack for the break before Kiswahili helps keep energy up across the longest morning of the week.
