KPSEA English and Kiswahili: One Hour Each and How to Spend It

In KPSEA 2026, English is sat on Monday 26 October from 10.50 to 11.50, and Kiswahili or KSL on Tuesday 27 October from 11.10 to 12.10. Both are one hour, and both are entirely multiple choice.

Both also sit second in the morning. English follows Mathematics, and Kiswahili follows Integrated Science, which is the longest paper of the three days at 1 hour 40. By the time your child opens the language paper, they have already been working.

The shape of the mornings

Practising a language paper cold on a Saturday morning does not reproduce this. At least twice before the exam, have your child do a shorter paper after a longer one, with a break in between, so the pattern is familiar.

Spending the hour

The most reliable structure for a one hour multiple choice paper is three passes.

1. Pass one, about 30 minutes. Answer everything that is immediately known. Skip anything requiring thought. Do not linger.
2. Pass two, about 20 minutes. Return to skipped questions, including the comprehension passage.
3. Pass three, about 10 minutes. Fill every remaining blank. There is no negative marking, so an unfilled bubble is simply a wasted opportunity.

The rule that matters most: if a question has taken more than a minute, move on and come back. Children lose more marks to time spent on one hard question than to any topic they never learned.

Comprehension: read the questions first

For any passage, read the questions before the passage itself. It converts reading into searching, which is faster and more accurate.

Then work through methodically:

• Answers are in the passage. Where two options both seem possible, one can be traced to a specific line and the other cannot.
• Watch for questions asking what the passage suggests rather than what it says. Those need inference from the text, not outside knowledge.
• Vocabulary in context questions are asking what the word means in that sentence, which is not always its most common meaning.

Keep the answer sheet safe

Every KPSEA paper is shaded in pencil on a personalised answer sheet. When a child skips a question during pass one, the risk of shading the next answer in the wrong row is real, and it can cost an entire section.

Two habits prevent it. Use a ruler under the current row, and after every ten questions check that the question number and the row number still match. What to revise in the remaining weeks

For both languages, the fastest gains are in vocabulary and set expressions, because they are pure recall and need no working. Ten focused minutes a day over six weeks covers a great deal.

Grammar takes longer and needs practice in full sentences rather than gap filling, because gaps can often be guessed from the surrounding words in a way that does not transfer to the exam.
