If your child is in Grade 9 this year, the calendar has just become very specific. KJSEA 2026 opens on 26 October and runs to 20 November, which means that from the first week of September you are working with about eight usable teaching weeks once you subtract half-terms, school events and the days nobody actually revises. This article is the plan we would follow with our own child: what to do in each of those eight weeks, which learning areas deserve more of the clock, and the specific mistakes that cost marks every single year.
It is written for the parent who wants a plan they can put on the wall, and for the Grade 9 learner who is tired of being told to "revise more" without being told what that means on a Tuesday evening. What KJSEA actually counts for, and what is already decided
This is the part most families get wrong, and getting it right changes how you spend September. Your child's senior school placement is not built from KJSEA alone. It is a composite.

Two things follow from that table. First, 40% of the outcome is already sitting in KNEC's records and no amount of October panic will move it. Second, and more usefully, the single largest block is still completely in play. A learner who has had an average two years can still change their placement substantially in the next eight weeks, because the biggest slice has not been cut yet. The eight-week plan, week by week
The structure below front-loads diagnosis and back-loads exam technique. That order matters. Most families do it backwards: they start with past papers in September when the child cannot yet do the content, get demoralised, and then try to learn content in the final fortnight when there is no time to consolidate it.
Weeks 1 and 2: diagnose, do not revise
Spend the first fortnight finding out precisely what is broken. Sit one past paper per learning area under loose conditions, mark it honestly, and write down every sub-strand where marks were lost. You are not trying to score well. You are building a list. By the end of week two you should have, per learning area, a written list of three to five weak sub-strands. If your child scores well across the board in a subject, that subject drops down the priority list and stays there.
Weeks 3, 4 and 5: fix the top three per learning area
This is the content block and it is where the marks are actually won. Take the three weakest sub-strands per learning area and teach them properly: notes, worked examples, then ten questions on that sub-strand alone. Do not move on until your child can do the questions without the notes open. Three sub-strands across nine learning areas is 27 focused repairs, which at roughly one and a half repairs per day is comfortably achievable in fifteen weekdays.
Weeks 6 and 7: timed full papers
Now switch to whole papers under real timing, with a clock visible. The purpose here is no longer learning content. It is pacing, question selection, and handwriting under pressure. Mark every paper the same day. Week 8: taper, do not cram
The final week is for light retrieval, sleep, and logistics. Confirm the centre, the stationery, the identification requirements. A learner who arrives rested outperforms the same learner who arrives having revised until midnight. This is not a soft claim, it is the most reliable finding in the whole of revision research.
How to split the clock across nine learning areas
Grade 9 learners are assessed across nine learning areas, and treating them equally is a mistake. The chart below shows the split we recommend for a learner aiming at a STEM pathway, where Mathematics and Integrated Science performance carries extra weight in the composite. Adjust it if your child is aiming at Arts and Sports or Social Sciences.

Take Wanjiru, a Grade 9 learner in Nyeri
Wanjiru is a real enough composite of the learners we hear from. In early September she was averaging around 55%, strong in Kiswahili and Religious Education, weak in Mathematics and losing marks in Integrated Science for reasons nobody had diagnosed.
Her diagnostic fortnight showed something specific: she was not weak at Mathematics generally. She was losing almost all her marks in three sub-strands, and she was leaving the last two questions of every paper blank because she ran out of time. That is not a knowledge problem, it is a pacing problem, and it needed a completely different fix.
So her plan split. Three weeks went on the weak sub-strands. Then, from week six, she did every Mathematics paper with a timer set to 80% of the real duration, which forced her to move. In Integrated Science her losses turned out to be diagram labelling, which she fixed in about four hours total. The point of the story is that her eight weeks were productive because the first two weeks were spent finding out what was actually wrong, rather than starting a general revision that would have spent most of its time on the Kiswahili she already knew.
Common mistakes to avoid in the final eight weeks
- Rereading notes and calling it revision. Rereading feels productive because the material feels familiar. Familiarity is not recall. If your child has not written anything down without looking, no revision has happened.
- Revising the strong subjects. Learners drift towards what they enjoy, which is usually what they are already good at. This is the single most common way a revision timetable quietly fails.
- Starting past papers too early. A paper attempted before the content is known produces a low mark and a discouraged child, and teaches nothing.
- Never marking anything. An unmarked past paper is close to worthless. The learning happens in the marking, when the child sees exactly why the mark was not awarded.
- Ignoring Creative Arts and Sports and Religious Education because they feel like soft options. They carry marks like everything else, and they are usually the cheapest marks left on the table.
- Cramming through the final week. Sleep loss in the last seven days reliably costs more marks than the extra revision gains.
What to use for the eight weeks
You do not need much. You need past papers with marking schemes, notes that match the current KICD designs, and a way to test recall.
