Updated 7 November 2026.

Direct answer: KNEC says KJSEA marking will take about three weeks, with contracted examiners reporting to marking centres on Monday 9 November 2026. KNEC chief executive Dr David Njengere said results will be available to the Ministry by December. That is a KNEC target, not a release date for parents. Placement into senior school is planned for January 2027.

What KNEC announced

On 6 November, Education News and The Standard reported that marking of the 2026 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) has started. About 1.2 million Grade 9 learners sat the papers. Both outlets say contracted examiners are due at their marking centres on 9 November and that the exercise will run for about three weeks.

The Standard quotes Dr Njengere: "We will complete the exercise so that the results are available for the Ministry by December." It also reports that multiple-choice items are machine-scored first, and that examiners then mark compositions, insha and other open-ended answers by hand.

What it means for parents

Do not expect results this week

Marking has only just begun. If the three-week estimate holds, scripts are still being marked until about the end of November. Even then, the quoted line says results go to the Ministry in December, so a public release date is a separate announcement. None has been made. We will not guess one.

Be careful with anyone selling results

While families wait, messages offering early results or changed scores tend to circulate. This is our advice, not a KNEC statement: pay nobody for results, and wait for the official announcement. Our guide to paper and results scams explains what to look for.

Use the wait to prepare

Placement follows the results, so the useful work now is practical. Read how the score is used in our Grade 10 placement review, check the official dates in the placement tracker, and look at what public senior schools may charge in our school fees guide. For the learner at home, a light daily routine is enough. Our Grade 9 holiday plan shows one.

What it means for teachers

The reports say contracted examiners are the ones due at marking centres on 9 November. Learners are most likely to ask about results, so a short, honest line helps: marking is under way, results are expected in December, and no date has been given.

What we do not know yet

The reports do not give the number of examiners, the number of centres or the number of scripts. They do not say when KNEC will release results to the public, or in what format. We have not seen a KNEC circular on the marking itself and rely on the two news reports above, which agree on the key dates. We will update this page if KNEC or the Ministry publishes more.
