Updated 6 November 2026.
Direct answer: Last year, after Grade 10 placement results came out on 19 December 2025, learners could ask for a review on the placement portal, with up to four requests each. The Ministry received 355,457 applications and approved 211,636. The Education CS said refusals were mainly about subject combinations or school capacity. No 2026 review dates have been announced.
Why this matters now
KNEC has started processing the 2026 KJSEA, and The Standard reported today that examiners are due at marking centres on Monday 9 November, that marking should take about three weeks (earlier reports said about two, so treat the length as an estimate), and that results are expected to reach the Ministry of Education by December. Those results will be used to place about 1.2 million Grade 9 learners in senior school in January 2027. When placement comes out, some families will want a different school or pathway. Last year's review round is the best guide we have to how that works.
These are 2025 facts, shown as a guide only. The Ministry has not published the 2026 review dates, and our placement tracker keeps official and unannounced steps separate.

The numbers: how many reviews were approved
Why requests were declined
Citizen Digital quotes Education CS Julius Ogamba as saying applications were declined over "the absence of the preferred subject combinations or the lack of capacity in the selected schools". Kenyans.co.ke reports the same two reasons as the main ones, without a direct quote. Demand was heavily concentrated: both outlets report up to 20,000 applications for schools such as Alliance High School, against an average capacity of about 500 places. The Ministry said 88 per cent of learners had been placed in line with their original or revised selections.
What families can do before results
These steps are our suggestions, drawn from the reasons the Ministry gave. They are not official instructions.
- Start from the subject combination, not the school name. The Ministry named missing subject combinations as a main reason for declines, so check that a school offers your child's combination before you rely on it.
- Use all your choices realistically. With up to four requests last year, a mix of one ambitious and several realistic schools gives a sensible chance. Check how many places a school is likely to have before you hope for it.
- Talk to your child about pathway first. Our guides to senior school placement after KJSEA and the eight senior school options set out the choices.
- Keep the portal details safe. Last year's results and joining instructions were on the placement portal. Make sure the adult who will log in knows the learner's details before results day.
- Keep learning in the gap. There is a gap between the last paper and reporting day. A light routine helps the move to Grade 10; our holiday academy is one option if you want teacher-led lessons.
What we do not know yet
We do not know the 2026 results date, the placement date, whether there will be one review window or two, how many requests each learner will be allowed, or the reporting date for January 2027. The Standard's 6 November report on marking gives the three-week marking estimate and the December target but no placement date. We will update this page when the Ministry publishes a circular. Last year's Standard article is partly behind a paywall; we used only the lines visible to us.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ask for a review of my child's Grade 10 placement?
Last year, yes. Learners could apply through the placement portal during a review window, with up to four requests each. Whether the same rules apply in 2026 has not been announced.
How many review requests were approved last year?
The Ministry approved 211,636 of 355,457 review applications, according to Citizen Digital and Kenyans.co.ke, both on 30 December 2025. The rest were declined.
Why were some Grade 10 review requests declined?
The Education CS said the main reasons were that the preferred subject combination was not available or the selected school lacked capacity.
When will Grade 10 placement 2027 be released?
No date has been announced. The Standard reports that KNEC aims to have KJSEA results with the Ministry by December, and that placement will be for January 2027.
Is a placement review the same as changing schools later?
No. Placement review is for Grade 9 leavers joining Grade 10. Moves after joining follow the transfer process in our guide to changing schools in January 2027.
