Who this is for

  • Parents of Kenya's pioneer Grade 10 class who have just watched their child finish the first KNEC assessment season of senior school and want to know what comes next.
  • Families searching for "Grade 10 KNEC assessment 2026 Term 3" results and wondering what, if anything, will arrive at home.
  • Guardians who want one clear picture of how this year links to Grade 11, Grade 12 and the final certificate.

The Grade 10 Term 3 KNEC assessment is over for learners. The written tests were opened to schools on the KNEC Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal on 5 October 2026, schools were asked to administer, score and upload them by 23 October, and KNEC's schedule set 31 October 2026 as the final date for Grade 10 School-Based Assessment (SBA) scores on the portal. Your child is home, the papers are marked, and the question every parent now asks is simple: what happens next, and what will we actually receive?

The short answer is that the Grade 10 assessment does not end in a result slip. It becomes the first 15 percent of a certificate your child will receive at the end of Grade 12, the Kenya Certificate of Basic Education (KCBE). This guide sets out the whole road from here to that certificate, the documents you should expect from the school, the ones you should not expect from KNEC, and the decisions a family can usefully make between now and January 2027. If you want the weighting arithmetic in detail first, our Grade 10 SBA parent guide covers it.

Information current as of 30 October 2026. KNEC and the Ministry of Education may publish new circulars for Grade 11 and the KCBE. Where a circular differs from this page, the circular wins.

  • Grade 10 SBA scores go from the school to KNEC's CBA portal. KNEC's schedule set 31 October 2026 as the final date for them.
  • KNEC has stated that Grade 10 SBA counts for 15 percent of the final KCBE score, Grade 11 SBA for another 15 percent and the Grade 12 summative assessment for 70 percent (The Star, 25 June 2026).
  • We found no KNEC announcement of a Grade 10 result slip for learners or parents. What families receive comes from the school: the end-of-year report, subject feedback and Grade 11 requirements.
  • KNEC has said it will pilot the senior school summative assessment in 2027, when this cohort is in Grade 11.
  • The KCBE grading scale, and university entry rules built on it, have not yet been published in final form. Ignore any "Grade 10 grade table" without a KNEC source.

After the Grade 10 KNEC assessment: the road to the KCBE

It helps to see the full three years on one page, because the October assessment is the first step of a long staircase, not a single exam that has now been "passed" or "failed". The table below separates what is confirmed from what is still expected.

Stage When What happens Status
Grade 10 projects and practicalsFrom 2 July 2026KNEC tools released to schools, scored by teachersDone

Two things stand out. First, the Grade 10 share is fixed now. Whatever the scores were, they will not be rewritten in Grade 11. Second, 85 percent of the final result has not happened yet. That combination is the right frame for every conversation at home this holiday: the year counted, and the bigger part is still ahead. For the school side of the October window, our explainer on KNEC's Grade 10 SBA schedule and October deadline has the circular details.

Quick glossary

  • SBA (School-Based Assessment): KNEC-set projects, practicals and written tests that are run and scored in your child's own school.
  • CBA portal: KNEC's online system where principals download tools and teachers upload scores. Parents do not have accounts on it.
  • KCBE: the Kenya Certificate of Basic Education, awarded after Grade 12. It replaces the KCSE for learners on the competency-based curriculum.
  • Summative assessment: the national assessment at the end of a stage, as opposed to continuous assessment during it.
  • Pilot: a trial run of a new assessment, used by KNEC to test the format before the real sitting.

What parents receive after the Grade 10 assessment, and what they do not

Many families expect a KNEC result slip in December, the way older children received KCPE or KCSE results. That is not how Grade 10 works, and it saves a lot of worry to know it in advance. KNEC's August 2026 guidance, as reported by Kenyans.co.ke, described principals overseeing the download of tools and subject teachers administering, marking and uploading scores. It also directed schools to retain records and supporting evidence from the assessment. It did not describe any learner result slip, and in our searches up to the end of October 2026 we found no KNEC announcement of one.

So what does come home? In practice it depends on the school, but most families will see some or all of the following.

Document or item Who issues it What to do with it
End-of-year school reportYour child's schoolRead subject by subject; note the two weakest areas
Marked end-of-year papers or test scriptsSubject teachers (some schools keep them)Use the lost marks to plan holiday revision

Our sister guide on how to understand end-of-year report card comments helps when the report uses phrases like "approaching expectation" or "needs consolidation". Remember that the school report and the KNEC SBA are related but not identical. Many schools set their own end-of-year exams for internal reporting; the KNEC tools are the part that counts towards the KCBE.

How the Grade 10 assessment feeds the KCBE

KNEC has published the weighting and not much more, so it is worth being precise about what is known. KNEC stated, as reported by The Star in June 2026, that the Grade 10 and Grade 11 school-based assessments will each make up 15 percent of the final score and the Grade 12 summative assessment the remaining 70 percent. The final certificate is the KCBE.

Here is the practical meaning, using simple percentages for illustration only (KNEC has not published its conversion method). If a learner averages 60 percent in a subject's Grade 10 SBA, that subject's Grade 10 slice is worth 9 of the available 15 points. A learner who averaged 80 percent holds 12. The gap between them is 3 points out of 100. The same 20-mark gap in the Grade 12 assessment would be worth 14 points. That is why a disappointing Grade 10 is a dent, not a disaster, and why a strong Grade 10 is a head start, not a guarantee.

KNEC has also published a Competency Based Assessment Framework (CBAF) for senior school on its website. In his statement at the release of the 2025 KCSE results in January 2026, the KNEC chief executive said the framework sets out the purpose, the mode, the types of tools and the mode of reporting for senior school learners, and that "the cumulative data gathered from the formative assessments in Grades 10, 11 and 12" will form part of reporting when learners receive their KCBE results. He also urged that all learners sit their SBAs and that all scores are uploaded, "to avoid disadvantaging learners at the end of the cycle". That is the official reason the 31 October date matters.

What KNEC has not yet published matters just as much:

  • The KCBE grading scale. How subject scores become a grade on the certificate has not been released in full.
  • How the seven subjects combine. Whether all seven subjects count equally, or some carry different weight for different purposes, is not public.
  • University and college entry rules. Universities have been discussing a draft framework for admitting CBE graduates, but it is not final. Our guide to the universities' draft CBE framework explains where that discussion stands.

If you see a "KCBE points table" or a "Grade 10 mean grade calculator" on social media, look for a KNEC document behind it. In October 2026 we could not find one.

The 2027 pilot: what it means for this class

The KNEC chief executive's statement at the release of the 2025 KCSE results said the council would pilot the senior school summative assessment in 2027, when the 2026 Grade 10 learners are in Grade 11. The detail has not been published: which schools, which subjects, how many learners, and whether a pilot sitting counts for anything. In past cycles, KNEC pilots have used a sample of schools to test papers before a national sitting. For example, in July 2024 KNEC ran a Grade 9 pilot assessment with about 5,000 learners in 235 schools, as The Star reported at the time.

For your family, the sensible reading is this. Your child may or may not be in a pilot school. If the school is selected, you will hear from the principal, not from a WhatsApp forward. Until KNEC says otherwise, assume a pilot is a trial of the format, and keep the focus on the parts KNEC has said count: Grade 11 SBA and, later, the Grade 12 assessment.

A step-by-step plan for the next ten weeks

The holiday runs from 26 October 2026 to 1 January 2027 on the Ministry of Education calendar. Ten weeks is long enough to rest properly and still arrive in Grade 11 ready. Here is an order of jobs that works for most families.

  1. Week 1: rest, then collect the paper trail. Put the end-of-year report, any marked papers, the CSL project file and the closing letter in one envelope. Write the assessment number on the front.
  2. Week 2: read the report together. List the seven subjects: the four core (English, Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language, Mathematics and Community Service Learning) and the three pathway subjects. Mark each one strong, steady or weak.
  3. Week 2: send one short message to the class teacher. Ask whether every subject, including CSL, was scored and uploaded, and which strands your child should work on. Then stop. Teachers are on leave too.
  4. Weeks 3 to 8: two targets, not seven. Choose the two weakest subjects and give each two or three short sessions a week. Our Grade 10 revision guide by subject lists the weak spots teachers see most.
  5. Christmas week: no set study. Rest is part of the plan.
  6. Final week: prepare for Grade 11. Check the requirements list, confirm the reporting date with the school and look over the first Grade 11 strands in each subject.

Before buying any Grade 11 book, read our guide to the KICD-approved Grade 11 textbooks. The school chooses the title, and buying the wrong Mathematics level (Core or Essential) is a common and expensive mistake.

Questions families are asking right now

Three worries come up again and again in parent groups after the Grade 10 assessment. Each has a calm answer.

"My child says the Chemistry test was terrible." One test in one subject is a small part of a 15 percent slice. Ask the teacher which strands caused the trouble, and make those the first holiday target. Do not ask anyone to change a mark. KNEC has warned that over-awarding or uploading scores not based on a learner's own work is malpractice.

"My child was sick during the test window." Tell the school in writing, with any medical note, and ask what was recorded. The school is the only route; parents cannot correct anything on the CBA portal.

"Should we change pathway now?" Grade 10 SBA was recorded in the subjects your child was registered for, and KNEC's July 2026 registration circular, as reported, said registered subject choices form the basis for placement, instruction and later assessment. We have found no published procedure for switching between Grade 10 and Grade 11. Raise any concern with the principal in writing, and wait for a written answer before acting.

One family's December

Take Mutua, a Grade 10 learner in the Social Sciences pathway at a county school in Machakos (a made-up example). He comes home convinced he "failed" Geography. His mother opens the end-of-year report and sees Geography at Approaching Expectation, with History and Citizenship and Business Studies at Meeting Expectation, and a note from the teacher about map work. She sends one message asking whether all his subjects were uploaded and which Geography strands to revise. The teacher replies in two days: yes, all uploaded; work on map reading and interpreting statistical data. Mutua's holiday plan becomes two Geography sessions a week on maps and data, two Essential Mathematics sessions on the strands he found hardest, and nothing else compulsory. By January he has redone fifteen map questions and his CSL reflection journal is up to date. Nothing about his Grade 10 score changed. Everything about how he starts Grade 11 did.

Common mistakes after the Grade 10 assessment

  • Waiting for a KNEC result slip. None has been announced. The school's report is the feedback you will get.
  • Paying for a "Grade 10 results portal". No such parent portal has been announced. Links asking for payment or the assessment number are scams.
  • Treating the 15 percent as final. It is real, but 85 percent of the KCBE is still to be earned.
  • Treating the 15 percent as nothing. It cannot be earned again later. Grade 11 SBA counts the same.
  • Losing the CSL file. Community Service Learning is core and assessed in Grade 11 too. Keep the log and reflections.
  • Buying Grade 11 books from a generic list. Wait for the school's list and check it against KICD's approved titles.
  • Letting ten weeks pass with no reading or Mathematics. Two short sessions a week are enough to prevent the January slide.

Resources for the holiday

For revision, the Grade 10 notes by pathway set out each subject's content, and the Grade 10 prediction papers by subject give format-accurate practice for a class with no national past papers yet. The Grade 10 Complete Revision and Exam Kit brings notes, papers and answers together, and the Grade 10 study hub collects everything for the class. When a strand will not make sense at 9 p.m., Somo, our CBC AI tutor, explains it in English or Kiswahili.

Frequently asked questions

When will Grade 10 KNEC assessment results be released?

KNEC has not announced a release of Grade 10 results to learners or parents. The Grade 10 SBA scores are stored by KNEC as the first 15 percent of the final KCBE score at the end of Grade 12.

What was the last date for Grade 10 SBA scores?

KNEC's 2026 schedule set 31 October 2026 as the final date for Grade 10 SBA scores on the CBA portal. The August circular, as reported, asked schools to administer, score and upload the written tests by 23 October.

Can parents see Grade 10 scores on the KNEC portal?

No. The CBA portal is for schools. Ask your child's school what feedback it will share, usually through the end-of-year report.

How much does Grade 10 count towards the KCBE?

According to KNEC, 15 percent. Grade 11 SBA counts for another 15 percent and the Grade 12 summative assessment for 70 percent.

Will Grade 11 learners sit a KNEC exam in 2027?

KNEC has said it will pilot the senior school summative assessment in 2027 when this cohort is in Grade 11. Details have not been published, and Grade 11 SBA dates are also still to be announced.

Is the KCBE grading scale out?

Not in full, as of October 2026. Treat any KCBE grade table without a KNEC source as unofficial.

When does Grade 11 start?

In January 2027. Some reports of the Ministry's calendar give an opening date, but our 2027 school calendar guide explains why you should confirm the exact day with your child's school.

Conclusion

After the Grade 10 Term 3 KNEC assessment, nothing dramatic arrives in the post, and that is by design. The scores go from the school to KNEC by 31 October 2026 and wait there as the first 15 percent of the KCBE. What you receive comes from the school: a report, some feedback and a list for Grade 11. Use them to pick two clear holiday targets, keep the year's papers and CSL file in one envelope, ignore anyone selling results or grade tables, and get ready for Grade 11, where the next 15 percent begins. The Grade 10 study hub has the material, and we will update this page when KNEC publishes Grade 11 dates or the KCBE grading rules.
