Who this is for
- Grade 9 learners, parents and teachers preparing for KJSEA Integrated Science (905/1 and 905/2) and Pre-Technical Studies (912/1) in the final week.
- According to KNEC's revised 2026 timetable, Integrated Science Paper 1 is on Thursday 29 October at 8.30 a.m., Pre-Technical Studies on Friday 30 October at 8.30 a.m., and Integrated Science Paper 2 closes the whole assessment at 2.00 p.m. on Friday 30 October.
- The Pre-Technical Studies project (912/2) was done in July, so only the written paper remains.
Integrated Science and Pre-Technical Studies have something awkward in common in KJSEA 2026: they sit at the tired end of the week. Integrated Science is split across the last two days, with Paper 1 on Thursday morning and Paper 2 as the very last paper of the assessment, at 2.00 p.m. on Friday. Pre-Technical Studies opens Friday morning. By then your child will have sat nine papers. A final week plan for these two subjects has to do two jobs: revise the right strands, and keep enough energy in reserve for Thursday and Friday.
This guide does both. It sets out the Thursday and Friday sessions from KNEC's revised timetable (reference KNEC/TD/SE/KJSEA/TT/2026/003), explains the paper formats as listed in KNEC's briefing notes, gives a final week plan from Monday 19 October, works through practice items for both subjects, and lists the mistakes that cost marks late in the week. Results figures come from the Ministry of Education's 2025 release, as reported by Citizen Digital and The Standard.
Information current as of Term 3, October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Integrated Science 905/1 (1 h 40 min) is on Thursday 29 October, 8.30 a.m.; 905/2 (1 hour) is the last KJSEA paper, Friday 30 October, 2.00 to 3.00 p.m. (KNEC).
- Pre-Technical Studies 912/1 (1 h 40 min) is on Friday 30 October, 8.30 to 10.10 a.m. The projects for Pre-Technical Studies and Agriculture were assessed in July.
- In 2025, 61.77 percent of candidates met or exceeded expectations in Integrated Science, the second-highest figure of any subject.
- KNEC's briefing notes list 905/1 as structured and multiple choice, and 905/2 as structured only.
- Revise Pre-Technical Studies earlier in the week; Thursday evening belongs to it, not to more Science.
KJSEA Integrated Science and Pre-Technical Studies: the Thursday and Friday sessions
The last two days of KJSEA 2026 are the heaviest. KNEC's revised timetable puts three papers on each of them, with a 30-minute break after the first and a 50-minute break before the afternoon paper. The chart shows the writing time of each paper; the three in green are the subject of this guide.
| Day | Time | Paper | Format (KNEC briefing notes) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thu 29 Oct | 8.30 to 10.10 a.m. | 905/1 Integrated Science | Structured and multiple choice, OMR sheet |
| Thu 29 Oct | 11.10 a.m. to 12.40 p.m. | 907 Social Studies | Structured and multiple choice |
| Thu 29 Oct | 2.00 to 3.40 p.m. | 911/2 Creative Arts and Sports | Written paper |
| Fri 30 Oct | 8.30 to 10.10 a.m. | 912/1 Pre-Technical Studies | Written paper |
| Fri 30 Oct | 11.10 a.m. to 12.40 p.m. | 908 / 909 / 910 CRE, IRE or HRE | Written paper |
| Fri 30 Oct | 2.00 to 3.00 p.m. | 905/2 Integrated Science | Structured only, personalised question paper |
The format column for 905/1, 905/2 and 907 comes from KNEC's 2025 briefing notes for supervisors and invigilators, published by Education News Hub in February 2026. The notes we have seen do not set out the format of 912/1, so we describe it only as a written paper. The practical point for Integrated Science is that Paper 1 mixes shaded multiple-choice items with written answers, while Paper 2, the one-hour paper on Friday afternoon, is entirely written. Earlier this year we described 905/2 in detail in our guide to the 905/2 practical-based paper.
Terms used in this guide
Practical-based paper: a written paper that tests practical skills on the page, such as reading scales, naming apparatus, ordering steps and recording observations.
Observation: what the senses record (the solution turned blue). Conclusion: what it means (the substance is a base).
A project in KJSEA is a task done and assessed in school earlier in the year; KNEC's timetable shows 912/2 Pre-Technical Studies and 906/2 Agriculture projects in July 2026.
What the 2025 results say about KJSEA Integrated Science
Integrated Science was one of the stronger subjects in the first KJSEA. According to the Ministry of Education figures reported by Citizen Digital on 11 December 2025, 61.77 percent of candidates met or exceeded expectations, second only to Hindu Religious Education at 84.62 percent, and well ahead of Mathematics at 32.44 percent. The same release reported that 59.09 percent of candidates were eligible for the STEM pathway at senior school. Pre-Technical Studies was not given a separate figure in the reports we found, so we do not quote one.
What does that mean for the final week? A learner with a sound Integrated Science base can gain more from protecting marks (units, diagrams, the observation-conclusion split) than from relearning content. And because the STEM pathway at senior school draws on Mathematics and Integrated Science together, a good Science paper matters to any learner hoping for that pathway. Our explainer on how KJSEA grades feed senior school placement covers the details.
The final week plan for Integrated Science and Pre-Technical Studies
The plan front-loads both subjects into the school week from Monday 19 October, when your child is fresh, and keeps the exam-week evenings short. Thursday evening, 29 October, is for Pre-Technical Studies and nothing else, because it is first on Friday morning. Integrated Science Paper 2 gets a fifteen-minute look on Friday at lunchtime, in the 50-minute break, and no more.
| Day | Subject | Session (about 45 to 60 minutes) |
|---|---|---|
| Mon 19 Oct | Integrated Science | Living things and their environment: draw and label three diagrams from memory, then 8 short questions. |
| Tue 20 Oct | Pre-Technical Studies | Tools and materials: name, use and care for ten tools; two properties and a use for each common material. |
| Wed 21 Oct | Integrated Science | Mixtures, elements and compounds: separation methods with reasons; 8 questions. |
| Thu 22 Oct | Integrated Science | Force and energy: calculations with formula, substitution and unit; reading scales. |
| Fri 23 Oct | Rehearsal day | No new work. Note the room. Check the drawing set: ruler, pencils, eraser, sharpener. |
| Sat 24 Oct | Both | Afternoon: one timed Integrated Science Paper 1 (100 minutes). Mark it. (Morning goes to English.) |
| Sun 25 Oct | Pre-Technical Studies | Morning only: drawing conventions and safety pairs, then one practice section. Afternoon rest. |
| Wed 28 Oct (evening) | Integrated Science | 30 minutes: diagrams and the formula list. Social Studies also needs a look tonight. |
| Thu 29 Oct (evening) | Pre-Technical Studies | 30 minutes: tool names, safety pairs, costing layout. Bag packed. Early night. |
| Fri 30 Oct (lunch break) | Integrated Science 905/2 | Eat first. Then ten minutes on the observation-conclusion rule and reading scales from notes left outside the room. |
If your child is following our KJSEA 3-week revision timetable, this plan replaces its Science and Pre-Technical sessions in the last week. For the full evening-by-evening view across all subjects, see the KJSEA timetable paper by paper.
Integrated Science practice items with worked answers
These are original practice items written for this guide. They are not KNEC questions. Each one targets a habit that protects marks.
1. Force and energy: work done
Question. A learner pushes a wheelbarrow with a force of 150 N through a distance of 12 m. Calculate the work done.
- Formula: work done = force Γ distance.
- Substitute: 150 Γ 12.
- Answer with unit: 1,800 J (joules).
Three lines, every time: formula, substitution, answer with unit. The unit is often worth its own mark.
2. Matter: density
Question. A stone of mass 60 g displaces 24 cmΒ³ of water in a measuring cylinder. Find its density.
- Density = mass Γ· volume = 60 Γ· 24.
- Answer: 2.5 g/cmΒ³.
3. Mixtures: choosing a method and saying why
Question. Explain how you would get clean salt from a mixture of salt and sand.
Answer. Add water and stir, because salt dissolves in water and sand does not. Filter, so that the sand stays on the filter paper. Evaporate the filtrate, so that the water leaves and salt crystals remain. The reason after each step is where the extra marks sit.
4. Observation and conclusion
Question. A few drops of a plant extract indicator are added to a soap solution and the colour changes to green. Write one observation and one conclusion.
Answer. Observation: the indicator turned green. Conclusion: the soap solution is basic (alkaline), assuming the class chart shows green for bases with that indicator. Keep the two separate; a sentence that mixes "turned green because it is a base" into the observation line risks losing the observation mark.

Pre-Technical Studies practice items with worked answers
5. Scale drawing
Question. A wall 3 m long is drawn to a scale of 1:50. How long is the line on the drawing?
- Convert to millimetres: 3 m = 3,000 mm.
- Divide by the scale: 3,000 Γ· 50 = 60 mm.
- Answer: 60 mm, or 6 cm.
6. Costing
Question. A learner makes a shoe rack using 4 timber pieces at KSh 180 each, nails worth KSh 60 and varnish worth KSh 150. Find the total cost of materials.
- Timber: 4 Γ 180 = KSh 720.
- Nails: KSh 60. Varnish: KSh 150.
- Total: 720 + 60 + 150 = KSh 930.
One item per line, quantity times unit price, and a clear total with the currency.
7. Safety: hazard and precaution
Question. State one hazard when using a chisel and one precaution.
Answer. Hazard: the blade can slip and cut the hand holding the work. Precaution: clamp the work in a vice and keep both hands behind the cutting edge. "Be careful" alone rarely earns a mark; name the hazard and match the precaution.

A case study: Achieng in Kisumu
Take Achieng, a Grade 9 learner in Kisumu who is strong in Science and planned to revise it every evening of exam week. Her teacher pointed out the problem: by Friday afternoon she would be sitting her sixth paper in two days, and she had not looked at Pre-Technical Studies since the July project. She moved two Science evenings to Pre-Technical Studies, drilled tool names and drawing conventions on Tuesday 20 and Sunday 25 October, and kept Friday's lunch break for food and a ten-minute look at observation rules. The aim was not to love Pre-Technical Studies; it was to stop it being the weak paper that pulled down an otherwise strong week.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Revising Science on Thursday night. Pre-Technical Studies is first on Friday. Integrated Science Paper 2 can wait until the lunch break.
- Skipping lunch on Friday. The 50-minute break before 905/2 is the only meal window. A hungry candidate sits the last paper badly.
- Answers without units. In calculations, the unit is part of the answer.
- Diagrams in pen, or unlabelled. KNEC says pencil is for diagrams and for shading only. Label every part the question asks for.
- Leaving notes in the room. Lunchtime notes stay in the bag outside. KNEC does not allow any notes or papers in or near the assessment room.
- Treating 905/2 as an easy last paper. It is one hour, structured only, and every line is written. Pace it like any other paper.

Frequently asked questions
When are the KJSEA Integrated Science papers in 2026?
According to KNEC's revised timetable, 905/1 is on Thursday 29 October from 8.30 to 10.10 a.m., and 905/2 is on Friday 30 October from 2.00 to 3.00 p.m. 905/2 is the last paper of KJSEA 2026.
When is the Pre-Technical Studies paper?
912/1 Pre-Technical Studies is on Friday 30 October from 8.30 to 10.10 a.m. The 912/2 project was scheduled for July 2026 and is already done.
Does my child need a laboratory to revise for 905/2?
No. 905/2 is a written paper. Practical skills such as reading a thermometer or measuring cylinder, naming apparatus and writing observations can be practised from drawings in notes and past papers.
How did candidates do in Integrated Science in 2025?
According to the Ministry of Education figures reported by Citizen Digital, 61.77 percent of candidates met or exceeded expectations in Integrated Science in 2025, the second-highest figure among the subjects reported.
What drawing equipment should my child bring on Friday?
KNEC asks candidates to bring mathematical and drawing instruments for the subjects that need them. For Pre-Technical Studies that usually means a ruler, sharp pencils, an eraser and a sharpener, plus whatever the teacher specifies at the rehearsal.
Is the Friday afternoon paper shorter for Braille candidates?
No, it is longer. KNEC's timetable gives 905/2 Braille candidates 1 hour 30 minutes, from 2.00 to 3.30 p.m.
Conclusion
The final week before KJSEA Integrated Science and Pre-Technical Studies is about timing as much as content. Both subjects fall at the heavy end of the assessment, with 905/1 on Thursday morning, 912/1 on Friday morning and 905/2 closing the week at 2.00 p.m. Revise both early in the week from 19 October, sit one timed Science paper on Saturday, give Thursday evening to Pre-Technical Studies, and protect Friday's lunch break for food first. Integrated Science was one of the stronger subjects in 2025, so the job now is to keep the marks your child has already earned in class. For printed practice papers with separate answers, start with the KJSEA Complete Revision Course.
