Integrated Science is three sciences travelling as one subject, and candidates who revise it as a single mountain drown in it. The paper samples its strands deliberately, its question styles repeat, and its practical skills appear in written form that can be drilled at a desk. Split it correctly and it becomes three short hills.
How the subject splits
| Strand | Core territory | Recurring question style |
|---|---|---|
| Living things and the environment | Cells, body systems, classification, ecosystems, health | Label the diagram, then explain a function |
| Matter and its changes | States, mixtures and separation, acids and bases, elements | Name the method or reaction, then apply it to a household case |
| Force, energy and their uses | Forces, machines, electricity, heat, waves | Calculate with the formula stated, or trace an energy change |
The written paper also carries the practical dimension: candidates read thermometers and measuring cylinders drawn on the page, identify apparatus, order the steps of a separation, and state observations versus conclusions. These are marks earned entirely through drill, because the skill is the reading and phrasing, not the equipment. The distinction the schemes reward hardest: an observation is what the senses record; a conclusion is what it means. Candidates who write "the water is boiling because..." inside an observation lose the mark to the conjunction.
The revision split that works
Rotate the three strands across the week rather than blocking one per fortnight, one session each, always ending with five marked questions from that strand. The full strand map for the junior school years is in our Integrated Science guide for Grades 7 to 9, and how this paper sits among the nine examined learning areas is explained in which subjects KJSEA examines.
Everything needed for the loop, notes per sub-strand, revision papers and their marking schemes, ships in the Grade 9 Integrated Science Complete Pack, or with every other subject in the Grade 9 All Subjects Bundle. The week-by-week run-in for all papers is the free KJSEA countdown plan.
