What Is Artificial Intelligence?
Start from zero. What AI actually is (and isn't), a brief history from Turing to ChatGPT, and the difference between narrow AI, general AI and what is actually shipping today.
From AI basics to prompt engineering, vibe coding, and a capstone project you'll actually ship. Kenyan-built. No prior coding required. The course is 100% free, a verifiable certificate is optional (KSH 1,000 / $7.50).
The short answer
It is a free, self-paced online AI course from CBC Edu Kenya: 10 modules, about 7 hours in all. You learn what AI is, how to prompt it, how to choose and use AI tools, how to use AI at work, how to build a small tool by vibe coding, and how to use AI responsibly under Kenyan law. You finish with a final project for your own industry. The course is 100% free. An optional, reviewed certificate costs KSh 1,000 (or $7.50 outside Kenya). It is not a government qualification.

What You'll Learn
Course structure
Three modules to understand AI, two to prompt it well, two to use it for real work, one to build with it, one to use it safely, and a final project that proves it.
| Pace | How it runs |
|---|---|
| Fast | 3 sittings: Modules 1 to 4 (2 h 30 min), 5 to 8 (2 h 55 min), 9 and 10 (1 h 40 min) |
| Steady | 1 module a day for 10 days, 30 to 60 minutes each |
| Gentle | 3 modules a week, finished in about 4 weeks |
Sums of the module minutes shown in the chart. Add about 10 minutes for each action kit.
The Curriculum
Each module has a lesson and a 5-question quiz, and Modules 1 to 9 end with an action kit you do on your own work. The minutes shown are for the lesson and quiz. All 10 modules are open now, free, with no sign-up.
Start from zero. What AI actually is (and isn't), a brief history from Turing to ChatGPT, and the difference between narrow AI, general AI and what is actually shipping today.
Demystifying machine learning and neural networks with analogies, not algorithms. What a "model" is, how training data shapes behaviour, and why AI "hallucinates."
Spotify playlists, Google Maps routes, Netflix recommendations, mobile money fraud alerts and chatbots. AI is already everywhere. This module is your tour of where.
A skill you can use every day. How to talk to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini so they give you what you actually want: the CO-STAR framework, worked examples, and the five mistakes beginners make.
Go beyond the basics: chain-of-thought prompting, few-shot examples, system prompts, prompt injection basics, and reusable prompt templates for your work or studies.
Hands-on with the tools that matter: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, NotebookLM, Khanmigo, Photomath. Which one for which job, how to combine them, and what is free or paid today.
Your career upgrade. Writing emails and reports, summarising meetings, building spreadsheets, doing research and reviewing documents, with a time log so you measure what AI really saves you.
A hands-on module. You build a working tool with plain-English instructions to an AI, then put it online. A phone-friendly path (a Google Sheet or Form) is included. No prior coding.
The grown-up conversation: AI bias, hallucinations, deepfakes, copyright, the Kenya Data Protection Act 2019, and what responsible AI use means for students, teachers and professionals.
The final module is a project, not a test. Pick your industry, build one useful thing with AI, and check it against a 20-point rubric. Then, if you want it, ask for your optional certificate.
From Module 10 to certificate
Doing the course and the final project is free. The certificate is optional, and you pay only if a person approves your project.
| Criterion | Pts | What a pass looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Fits the industry | 4 | Solves a real task from your own work, not a toy. |
| Prompt quality | 4 | Uses CO-STAR (or a system prompt) with the six parts visible. |
| Checked for facts | 4 | A short note says what you verified and where. |
| Privacy | 4 | No personal data of real people. The red items from Module 9 are absent. |
| Usable | 4 | Someone else can open it and use it on a phone in under 2 minutes. |
Pass: 14 out of 20, and not zero on Privacy. This is a check against our rubric. It is not a government accreditation.
Sample certificate. Your own name, date and certificate number are printed on yours. It has a unique ID and a QR code that opens the public verification page at cbcedukenya.com/verify. It is a record of learning, not a government or examination-board qualification.
On Completion Β· Optional
The full 10-module course is 100% free. If you want a shareable, verifiable certificate to put on your CV or LinkedIn, the optional certificate is KSH 1,000 (Kenyans, M-Pesa) or $7.50 USD (international, PayPal/Card). Every certificate has a unique ID and a public verification URL, so anyone can confirm it is genuine. To get one, you finish the final project and ask for the certificate. The CBC Edu Kenya team checks your project against a published rubric and replies by email within 2 working days. If it is approved, you pay, and the certificate is emailed after we confirm your payment. It is not instant, and it is not a government qualification.
Who it is for
In Module 10 you pick the industry closest to your life. You get a brief for it, a starter prompt, an example outline and the same 20-point rubric as everyone else. The AI techniques are the same; the project is yours.
Teacher
You hand in: A 3-page Google Doc called "My AI Planning Kit": your best 5 prompts, one finished lesson plan, and your edit notes. No learner names anywhere.
The marker looks hardest at: Curriculum fit and fact checking.
Your certificate line: "AI project for Teaching"
School administrator
You hand in: A one-page standard operating procedure (SOP) plus 3 prompt templates. Each template starts with the rule "Remove names and phone numbers before you paste anything".
The marker looks hardest at: Privacy. A project that uses real learner names cannot pass.
Your certificate line: "AI project for School Administration"
Farmer or agribusiness
You hand in: A Google Sheet plus 5 saved replies. Check prices, chemical doses and animal health advice with your extension officer or an agrovet. Never trust AI for them.
The marker looks hardest at: Usable on a phone, and honest checking of anything that could harm crops or animals.
Your certificate line: "AI project for Agribusiness"
Small shop or retail
You hand in: A one-page reply guide and a stock sheet. No customer phone numbers or M-Pesa messages inside.
The marker looks hardest at: Usable by someone else in under 2 minutes, and privacy of customers.
Your certificate line: "AI project for Retail"
Clinic or health worker
You hand in: A leaflet or reminder template with a line "Reviewed by [role]". No patient data. No diagnosis or medicine doses from AI.
The marker looks hardest at: Privacy and safety.
Your certificate line: "AI project for Health Administration"
Church, NGO or community group
You hand in: A one-page template plus one finished sample that uses made-up numbers.
The marker looks hardest at: Checked figures and respect for beneficiaries' privacy.
Your certificate line: "AI project for Church and Community Organisations"
Small business owner
You hand in: A one-page plan with your time log (before and after), the prompt or sheet you built, and the tool you used. Honest numbers only. If you saved no time, say so.
The marker looks hardest at: Real task, honest numbers, usable by someone else.
Your certificate line: "AI project for Small Business"
Student
You hand in: A Google Doc called "My Study Kit". Follow your school or university rules on AI. Do not hand in AI work as your own.
The marker looks hardest at: Honest use and fact checking.
Your certificate line: "AI project for Learning"
Other (my own field)
You hand in: A link (Google Doc, Sheet, Form, web page or Canva) or a PDF with all names removed. It must be useful to a real person.
The marker looks hardest at: The same 20-point rubric as every other field.
Your certificate line: "AI project for [your field]"

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is any computer system that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence.
That includes things like: understanding language, recognising images, making decisions, translating text, generating creative content, and learning from experience.
When you ask Siri a question, that's AI. When M-Pesa flags a suspicious transaction, that's AI. When Netflix recommends a show you actually enjoy, that's AI. When Safaricom's system recognises your voice, that's AI.
π Key Analogy
Think of AI like teaching a child. You show them 1,000 pictures of cats and 1,000 pictures of dogs. After a while, they can tell the difference, even with a new picture they've never seen. That's exactly how many AI systems work. They "learn" by seeing thousands of examples.
The full module has the complete lesson and a quiz. It is open now, with no sign-up.
Open Full Module 1, It's Free βFor Kids Β· Ages 8 to 14
A separate 10-lesson AI course built for Kenyan kids. Friendly language, hands-on projects with Teachable Machine, safety rules for using ChatGPT at home, and a colourful certificate co-signed by mum or dad. KSH 500 for the cert, half our adult price.
Common Questions
Twenty answers, in plain words.
Yes. All 10 modules and their quizzes are free, with no sign-up and no card. Only the optional certificate is paid: KSh 1,000 by M-Pesa, or $7.50 by PayPal or card, and you pay only after a person has approved your final project.
About 7 hours for the lessons and quizzes (425 minutes across the 10 modules, 30 to 60 minutes each). Each action kit in Modules 1 to 9 adds about 10 minutes. There is no deadline, so you can finish in a weekend or spread it over a month.
No. The course is for complete beginners. If you can use WhatsApp or browse the internet, you have the skills you need. Module 8 teaches vibe coding, which means describing what you want in plain English and letting an AI tool build it.
No. You can do the exercises with the free version of a major AI assistant. Free limits and prices change over time, so check each tool's own page. Module 6 compares free and paid options and shows which tasks need which tool.
Yes. The lessons, quizzes and action kits work in a phone browser. Module 8 has a phone build path using a Google Sheet or Form. One optional exercise in Module 2 uses Teachable Machine, which needs a webcam and works best on a laptop.
No. You can open Module 1 straight away. You may leave your name and email if you want course updates. The boxes you tick in the action kits are saved on the device you use.
You read a lesson, take a 5-question quiz and, in Modules 1 to 9, do an action kit. Module 10 replaces the kit with your final project.
It is a short, practical page at the end of each of Modules 1 to 9, about 10 minutes long. It gives you a prompt to keep, a worked example, a checklist and a 5-minute exercise that you do on your own task, so you finish each module with something you can use.
It is a project, not an exam. You pick your industry, read the brief, build one useful thing with AI (for example a planning kit, a reply guide, a stock sheet or a standard operating procedure) and check it against a 20-point rubric before you send it.
There are nine: teacher, school administrator, farmer or agribusiness, small shop or retail, clinic or health worker, church, NGO or community group, small business owner, student, and other, where you name your own field.
A person reads it against a published 20-point rubric: fits the industry, prompt quality, checked for facts, privacy and usable, 4 points each. The pass mark is 14 out of 20, and you cannot score zero on Privacy.
Finish your project, then use the Request my certificate form with your name, email, industry, project title and a link to your project. A person replies by email within 2 working days. If it is approved you pay, and the certificate is emailed after we confirm your payment. It is not instant because a person checks every one.
You get short, kind feedback on what to fix and can send the project again once. You pay nothing unless your project is approved.
It is not accredited by a government body or an examination board. It is a completion certificate that records you learned the fundamentals and built a project. Many people share it on LinkedIn, but we cannot promise how an employer will treat it. For formal accreditation, look at providers such as Google, Microsoft or deeplearning.ai.
Every certificate has a unique ID and a QR code. Anyone can open cbcedukenya.com/verify, enter the ID, or scan the QR code to confirm it.
For the school administrator, small shop and small business briefs there is an optional link to a free AI Business Assessment from AI Consultancy Kenya, a separate business with its own website. You tick a box to confirm you understand that, you choose what to share, and your project and certificate do not depend on it.
Yes. Each module can be taught as a stand-alone lesson. Email cbcedukenya@gmail.com if you would like classroom guidance.
Yes. There is a separate 10-lesson AI course for Kenyan children aged 8 to 14, with a certificate co-signed by a parent. Its certificate costs KSh 500.
You can read the AI Education hub on cbcedukenya.com for news and guides, or take AI Sovereign, a separate paid advanced course on building AI agents with Claude Code (22 modules, KSh 2,000). You do not need it for the AI Foundations certificate.
Yes. Module 9 covers AI bias, hallucinations, deepfakes, copyright and your rights under the Kenya Data Protection Act 2019, and its action kit shows what is safe, what needs names removed and what you should never paste into an AI tool.
