Nearly every Kenyan household with a candidate has made a revision timetable. Colourful, ruled with a straight edge, taped to the wall in early September. And nearly every one of those timetables is abandoned by the end of the month, at which point the family concludes the child lacks discipline.
The child usually does not lack discipline. The timetable was unbuildable. This article is about how to make one that survives contact with an ordinary Kenyan school week, whether your child is preparing for KPSEA, KJSEA or end-of-term assessments. Information current as of Term 3, 2026.
Why the wall chart fails
Three failures account for almost all of them.
It claims hours that do not exist. A timetable that starts at 4pm assumes the child is home at 4pm. Many are not. Add travel, a meal, chores and school homework, and the first genuinely free slot is often 7pm. A plan built on imaginary hours collapses on day one, and the collapse feels like failure rather than like arithmetic.
It has no rest day. Seven days of revision for eight straight weeks is not sustainable for an adult, let alone an eleven year old. The rest day is not a reward for good behaviour. It is a structural component, and timetables without one are abandoned rather than paused.
It has no recovery mechanism. A funeral, a power cut, a sick week. Something always happens. When a rigid timetable is missed for three days, the learner cannot see a route back to it, and the sensible response is to abandon the whole thing. Timetables need slack built in before it is needed.
Start with the hours that exist
Before writing anything into a grid, audit an ordinary weekday honestly. Not the ideal day. Tuesday.

Ninety minutes. That is the honest answer for most day-school learners, and a timetable built on ninety minutes that is followed for eight weeks beats a timetable built on four hours that is followed for nine days. Weekends are different and are where the longer work belongs.
The three rules that make a timetable stick
Rule 1: name the task, not the subject
"Mathematics" is not a task. It is a category, and when the moment comes the learner has to decide what to do, which is exactly the moment revision gets postponed. Write the sub-strand and the quantity: "Fractions: past paper questions 1 to 10, mark them". Now there is nothing to decide and a clear point at which it is finished.
Rule 2: hardest first
Whatever your child avoids should occupy the first slot of the session, when attention is highest. The near-universal instinct is the opposite, to warm up with something easy, and the result is that the difficult subject sits at the end of the evening and quietly never happens.
Rule 3: build in the catch-up slot
Leave one weekday slot and part of Saturday deliberately empty. That is where missed work goes. A learner who falls two sessions behind and can see exactly where those sessions will be made up does not abandon the plan. This single feature is the difference between a timetable that lasts a fortnight and one that lasts a term.
A weekly grid that actually works
Here is the shape for a Grade 9 learner with roughly 90 minutes on weekdays and longer at weekends. Adjust the learning areas, keep the structure.

Two catch-up windows, one full rest day, and every weekday slot named rather than vague. Mathematics appears twice because it is usually the weakest area and because it responds to frequency more than to length.
What happens to a timetable over eight weeks
The chart below shows the pattern we see repeatedly: the overloaded timetable starts strong and collapses, while the modest one holds. Total hours completed over the eight weeks end up far higher for the modest plan, even though it promised less.

The overloaded plan technically wins on paper hours, and that is exactly why parents keep building them. But it wins by front-loading, and it delivers those hours in September when they are least valuable, then collapses entirely through October when the assessment is imminent. The realistic plan is still running in the final fortnight, which is the fortnight that matters most.
Take Njeri, a Grade 6 learner in Machakos
Njeri's father built a timetable in early September covering 4pm to 9pm, seven days, every learning area twice. By the second week she was doing about half of it, by the fourth she had stopped, and the household argument that followed was about attitude.
What had actually happened was that she reached home at 5.40pm, not 4pm. The plan had never been possible. They rebuilt it around 7pm to 8.30pm, five weekdays, Saturday morning for a full paper, Sunday off. Every slot named a sub-strand rather than a subject. Friday was left empty on purpose.
She followed that plan until the end of October. It promised less than a third of what the first one did, and she completed more revision than she would have under any version of the original.
Adapting it to your household
The grid above assumes a fairly settled evening. Many Kenyan households do not have one, and the honest adaptations matter more than the ideal plan.
Long commutes
If your child leaves at 5.30am and returns at 6.30pm, the weekday evening realistically holds one 45-minute slot, not two. Accept that and move the weight to Saturday and Sunday morning, keeping Sunday afternoon free. A single well-used weekday slot plus four hours across the weekend is a genuinely workable plan, and it is far better than a five-slot fantasy that produces guilt and nothing else.
Shared space and unreliable power
Where light or quiet is limited in the evening, invert the day. Early morning, from about 5am, is usually quieter and the learner is rested. Sixty minutes before the household wakes is worth ninety at 9pm under a shared lamp with siblings nearby. Whichever you choose, keep it constant. The value comes from the slot being automatic, and a slot that moves around gets negotiated away.
More than one candidate in the house
Two children preparing at once is common and the instinct is to sit them together. Resist it if their learning areas differ, because one will end up supervising the other. Stagger the slots instead, or give them the same slot in different rooms and use the weekend marking session together, which is the part where sharing genuinely helps.
Boarding school
The plan moves into prep. Send your child back with a written list of named sub-strand tasks rather than a timetable grid, because they cannot control when prep happens but they can control what they open when it starts. A list of 40 specific tasks for the term is more useful to a boarder than any weekly chart.
Tracking it without turning into a police officer
Adherence is the number that matters, not hours. At the end of each week, count the slots planned and the slots completed, and write the two numbers at the bottom of the chart. That is the whole tracking system.
If the completion rate sits above about 80%, the plan is working and should be left alone. Between 50% and 80%, something specific is wrong, usually one particular slot that keeps failing, and that slot should be moved or shortened. Below 50%, the plan is too big and should be cut roughly in half without argument or negotiation about effort.
Notice what this avoids. It replaces the nightly question "did you revise?", which invites a defensive answer, with a weekly count that both of you can see. Families who track adherence argue markedly less about revision than families who track effort, because a number on a page is not an accusation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Building it without the child. A timetable imposed on a learner is a parent's plan. One built with them is theirs, and ownership predicts adherence better than any other factor.
- Colour-coding for an hour. The making of the chart is not revision, however satisfying it is.
- No rest day. Covered above, and worth repeating because it is the most common single fault.
- Equal time for every learning area. Time should follow weakness, not fairness.
- No marking slot. If a Saturday paper is never marked, the whole session was close to wasted.
- Restarting from scratch after a bad week. Use the catch-up slot and carry on. A missed week is not a failed plan.
Materials that fit this structure
A named-task timetable needs a supply of specific tasks, which in practice means past papers and revision questions organised by sub-strand. Yes. Holidays allow longer morning sessions, which are better than evening ones. But keep the rest day.
