SBA Is 40 Percent of KJSEA 2026: What Parents Must Check Before October

The written papers are only 60 percent of KJSEA. The other 40 percent was assessed months ago, and a score that was never uploaded is invisible until results day.

SBA Is 40 Percent of KJSEA 2026: What Parents Must Check Before October

Most KJSEA conversations in September are about revision. That is understandable, because the written papers are the part everyone can see coming. But the written papers carry only 60 percent of the final grade. The remaining 40 percent comes from School Based Assessment, and almost all of it has already happened.

This matters because a revision timetable cannot recover an SBA mark. Once the window has closed, the only thing a parent can still influence is whether the marks their child earned were actually recorded and submitted.

How the KJSEA grade is built

School Based Assessment40 percentAcross Grades 7, 8 and 9No, but it can be verified

Each learning area is scored out of 8 points, and with nine learning areas the total is 72 points. A weak SBA record does not simply lower one subject, it drags the overall points total, which is what determines senior school placement.

The projects are already done

Three learning areas carry a project component that was assessed between May and July 2026:

  • 911/1 Creative Arts and Sports project
  • 912/2 Pre Technical Studies project
  • 906/2 Agriculture project

If your child completed those, the marks exist somewhere. The question is whether they reached KNEC. Projects are the most commonly mislaid component because they are assessed outside normal lesson time, often by a teacher who has since changed class or school.

The four things worth checking this month

1. Ask for written confirmation that scores were uploaded

Send one message to the class teacher asking them to confirm that all SBA scores for your child, including the three projects, have been entered and submitted. Ask for it in writing. Not because anyone is dishonest, but because a written request gets checked and a verbal one gets remembered.

2. Check that the scores match the work you saw

If your child brought home a project that clearly took weeks, and the recorded score does not reflect that, ask. Schools can correct genuine recording errors far more easily before submission deadlines than after results are released.

3. Confirm your child's registration details

Names, index numbers and the assessment number should be correct and consistent. A child registered under a slightly different name than the one on their birth certificate creates problems at placement that are tedious to unpick later.

4. Ask about anything missed through absence

If your child was ill during an assessment window, find out whether the task was rescheduled or simply recorded as missing. This is the single most common source of an unexplained low SBA score.

What SBA actually measures

SBA is not a collection of extra tests. It is meant to capture the things a written paper cannot: practical skill, sustained project work, collaboration, and progress over time. That is why it spans all three years of junior school rather than one exam week.

For parents, the practical consequence is that a child who is strong in class but freezes in exams is not as disadvantaged under KJSEA as they would have been under the old system. Equally, a child who coasts through Grades 7 and 8 cannot fully rescue the grade with a strong October.

What this means for the next six weeks

Two things follow. First, verify the SBA record now, because that window closes quietly and without warning. Second, put revision effort where it still changes the outcome, which is the 60 percent sat between 26 and 30 October.

Our guide to reading the marking scheme is a good place to understand how those written marks are actually awarded, and how mock papers lift grades covers why timed practice outperforms re reading notes.

For the written component itself, the KJSEA Complete Revision Course covers all nine learning areas with notes, predictive papers and a separate answer booklet. Families revising across more than one child often find the CBCEduKenya Plus membership works out cheaper than buying subject packs individually.

The written papers get all the attention. The 40 percent that is already banked deserves one message to a teacher this week.
