KJSEA English: Where Composition and Functional Writing Marks Actually Sit

English candidates write plenty and still score modestly. The marks sit in specific places: agreement, tense control, format and the counter-argument. Here is the map.

KJSEA English: Where Composition and Functional Writing Marks Actually Sit

English is the paper where effort and marks part company most visibly. A candidate fills every line, the composition runs over the page, and the score comes back ordinary. The reason is that KJSEA English is marked on control, not on volume, and control is assessed in places most candidates never think about.

How a composition is actually marked

What the marker weighsWhat earns itWhat loses it
Content and relevanceA story or argument that genuinely answers the promptA prepared composition bent to fit the title
OrganisationParagraphs with one idea each, a shaped beginning and endOne long paragraph, or an ending that just stops
Language accuracyAgreement and tense held steady for the whole pieceTense drifting between past and present mid-story
StyleVaried sentence openings, one image that lands naturallyIdioms stacked for decoration

The heaviest and least visible of these is accuracy. Two habits do most of the damage: agreement across a long phrase, where "the box of pencils are on the table" loses the mark because the subject is the box, not the pencils; and tense drift, where a story begins in the past and slides into the present by paragraph three. Both are fixed by proofreading for exactly one thing at a time in the final five minutes.

Functional writing is format first

The formal letter, report and notice are marked with a format checklist before the content is even read. A brilliant letter with one address earns less than a plain letter with the format complete: both addresses, the date, a subject heading, the right salutation, and the closing that matches it. "Yours faithfully" follows Dear Sir or Madam; "Yours sincerely" follows a name. Mixing those two is among the most common single lost marks in the paper.

The counter-argument nobody writes

Argumentative prompts reward candidates who state one opposing point fairly and answer it. Most candidates list only their own side and quietly forfeit those marks. One paragraph beginning "Some people argue that..." followed by "However..." is worth more than two further points in favour, because it demonstrates the skill the question is actually testing.

This is the written half of the same discipline covered in our Kiswahili grammar guide, and the timetable planning sits in the KJSEA dates and scoring hub. Grade 8 families should note that the Grade 8 year contributes directly to this paper. Structured practice, with compositions marked against the same grid teachers use, is in the KJSEA Grade 7 to 9 Complete Revision Course.

Key Takeaways

  • Length earns nothing; control of agreement and tense earns steadily.
  • Functional writing is marked format-first: addresses, date, heading, matched closing.
  • One fairly-stated counter-argument outscores two extra points in favour.
  • Proofread for one error type at a time in the final five minutes.
  • KJSEA draws on Grade 7 and 8 English as well, not Grade 9 alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a KJSEA composition be?

Long enough to develop and close the story or argument, usually around 350 to 450 words. Marks follow control, so a shorter accurate piece beats a longer drifting one.

Do idioms earn marks?

One used naturally can lift style. Several stacked for display read as decoration and can cost more than they earn.

Which closing goes with which salutation?

Dear Sir or Madam pairs with Yours faithfully. A named recipient pairs with Yours sincerely.

Is spelling heavily penalised?

Persistent errors in common words cost more than a rare slip in a hard word, because they read as weak control rather than ambition.
