KJSEA Kiswahili: The Ngeli and Vitenzi Rules That Decide the Grade

Kiswahili candidates rarely lose marks because they have nothing to say. They lose them on agreement, on ngeli, and on the six verb forms. Here is exactly where, and how to fix it in the weeks that remain.

KJSEA Kiswahili: The Ngeli and Vitenzi Rules That Decide the Grade

Ask any Kiswahili teacher where the marks go and you will get the same answer. Learners do not fail because they cannot think of anything to write. They fail on sarufi, the grammar, and almost always in the same three places: noun classes, verb forms, and agreement between the two.

That matters more this year than usual. KJSEA assesses Grade 7, Grade 8 and Grade 9 content together rather than Grade 9 alone, so three years of grammar is in scope in a single sitting. With the national assessment season now close, and with roughly 3.6 million candidates due to sit national assessments this cycle, the difference between a secure grade and a disappointing one is usually a handful of agreement marks repeated across a whole paper.

Ngeli: the table the whole paper rests on

A noun class, ngeli, is not decided by how the noun looks. It is decided by the verb prefix that follows it. This is the single most useful thing a candidate can understand, because the word nyumba looks identical in singular and plural and only the verb reveals which is meant.

NgeliUmojaWingiSingular verbPlural verb
A-WAmtu, mwalimuwatu, walimumtoto anachezawatoto wanacheza
U-Imti, mkonomiti, mikonomti umeangukamiti imeanguka
LI-YAgari, jichomagari, machogari limefikamagari yamefika
KI-VIkiti, kitabuviti, vitabukiti kimevunjikaviti vimevunjika
I-ZInyumba, njianyumba, njianyumba imejengwanyumba zimejengwa
U-ZIukuta, ufunguokuta, funguoukuta umebomokakuta zimebomoka

Look at the I-ZI row. The noun does not change at all. A candidate who has memorised a list of nouns will guess; a candidate who reads the verb prefix will be right every time.

The six kauli, where most marks actually go

Verb extensions, the kauli, appear in almost every Kiswahili paper and are the section markers report on most often. They are learned by building sentences, never by memorising the six names.

KauliMeaningpikaExample
Kutendathe plain actionpikaMama anapika chakula.
Kutendeadoing it for someonepikiaMama alinipikia chakula.
Kutendwait is done to somethingpikwaChakula kilipikwa jana.
Kutendeanadoing it for each otherpikianaWalipikiana chakula.
Kutendeshacausing it to be donepikishaAlimpikisha dada yake.
Kutendekait is possiblepikikaChakula hiki kinapikika haraka.

The three errors that cost the most

Changing the noun but not the verb. Asked for the plural of Kiti kimoja kimevunjika, a learner writes Viti viwili kimevunjika. The noun and the adjective moved; the verb did not. Half the mark is gone. The plural changes the noun, the adjective and the verb: Viti viwili vimevunjika.

Using -li- where -me- is required. Alisoma is the ordinary past. Amesoma is the perfect. They are not interchangeable, and a question asking for hali timilifu wants the second.

Answering comprehension from general knowledge. Markers are explicit about this: an answer that is true but does not appear in the passage earns nothing. The comprehension section rewards reading, not knowledge.

What to do in the weeks that remain

  1. Drill the ngeli table three times across three separate days rather than once for an hour.
  2. Take any verb and build all six kauli in sentences. If a learner can do that on demand, a large part of the grammar section is secure.
  3. Practise converting singular to plural with the verb every time, out loud.
  4. Do one comprehension a week under time, and mark it strictly against the passage.

For a structured version of exactly this, our KJSEA Grade 7 to 9 Complete Revision Course carries the Kiswahili notes, reference sheet and revision pack for all three years in one download, alongside every other learning area. Parents working to a plan may also want the KJSEA dates and scoring hub, and Grade 7 and 8 families should read why Term 3 exams are the real dress rehearsal.

Key Takeaways

  • Ngeli is identified by the verb prefix, not by the shape of the noun.
  • KJSEA covers Grade 7, 8 and 9 Kiswahili together, so three years of grammar is examinable.
  • The six kauli are learned by building sentences, not by memorising their names.
  • Changing a noun to plural without changing the verb is the single most common lost mark.
  • Comprehension answers must come from the passage, however true an outside answer may be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kiswahili compulsory at KJSEA?

Yes. Kiswahili is one of the nine learning areas assessed at KJSEA, alongside English, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Religious Education, Agriculture and Nutrition, Pre-Technical Studies, and Creative Arts and Sports.

Does KJSEA test only Grade 9 work?

No. It assesses Grade 7, Grade 8 and Grade 9 content together, which is why revision that starts at Grade 9 alone leaves gaps.

How much of the paper is grammar?

Grammar and language use carry the largest single share in most Kiswahili papers, which is why a learner who is fluent in speech can still score modestly if agreement is weak.

Should a learner revise in Kiswahili or in English?

In Kiswahili. Grammar rules explained in English are understood and then forgotten, because the recall in the examination has to happen in the language itself.
