Every parent has watched it happen. Your child sits with a book for two hours, highlighter in hand, pages turning. They close the book feeling like they have revised. Three days later they cannot answer a question on any of it, and everyone concludes they need to work harder.

They almost certainly do not need to work harder. They need to work differently. This article sets out what the research actually shows about which revision techniques work, why the popular ones fail, and how to build a routine around the effective ones for a CBC learner preparing for KPSEA, KJSEA or an end-of-term assessment. The uncomfortable finding: most revision is the wrong kind

In 2013 a team of cognitive psychologists led by John Dunlosky published a review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest that examined ten common study techniques and rated each one for how well it actually works across subjects, ages and test types. It remains the most widely cited piece of work on the subject, and its conclusions are blunt.

Look at the bottom half of that table. Highlighting, rereading and summarising are, between them, close to a complete description of how most learners revise. They were all rated low utility. Not useless, but not where the hours should go.

The reason is a trap called fluency. When you reread a page, it feels easier the second time, and your brain interprets that ease as knowing. It is not knowing, it is recognition. The test does not ask you to recognise the page. It asks you to produce the answer with the page closed.

Why forgetting is the actual problem

Hermann Ebbinghaus, working in the 1880s, established that memory for new material drops off sharply and then levels out. Most of what is forgotten is forgotten quickly, in the first day or two. The shape of that curve is why cramming fails: a single long session puts material into memory at a point on the curve from which most of it will fall away before the assessment.

What changes the curve is returning to the material. Each review flattens it, so the same total number of hours produces far more retained knowledge when spread out.

The practical reading of that chart is simple. Four separate 30-minute sessions across two weeks will beat one two-hour session, even though the total time is identical. Nothing extra is being spent. The hours are just placed differently.

The three habits that do the work

1. Close the book and write

This is retrieval practice, and it is the single highest-value change most learners can make. After reading a section, close everything and write down what you remember on a blank sheet. Then open the book and check what you missed. The gaps you find are exactly the material you were about to lose.

It feels harder than rereading. That difficulty is the point. Effortful recall is what builds durable memory, which is why the technique that feels least comfortable is the one that works best.

2. Space the returns

Revisit each topic on a widening schedule rather than once. A workable pattern for a CBC learner is: the same day, then two days later, then a week later, then a fortnight later. Four short returns beat one long stare.

3. Mix the questions up

Interleaving means not doing twenty questions of the same type in a row. When every question on the page is about fractions, the learner stops choosing a method and starts repeating one. In the actual assessment nobody tells them which method applies, and choosing the method is most of the difficulty. Mixing question types is harder during practice and produces better results in the paper.

Take Amani, a Grade 8 learner in Nakuru

Amani revised the way almost everyone does. He would sit down on a Sunday afternoon with Integrated Science, read the chapter, highlight the key lines, and reread the highlighted parts. Four hours, every Sunday. His marks did not move for two terms.

The change he made was small. Same four hours, split into four sessions of one hour across the week. Each session began with ten minutes of writing down everything he could recall from the previous session, before opening any book. Each ended with five questions attempted with the notes closed.

By the end of the term his Integrated Science mark had moved up substantially, and the interesting part is what he reported: it felt worse. Recall is uncomfortable and rereading is soothing. He had spent two terms mistaking the comfortable activity for the productive one, which is exactly the trap the research describes.

How to build this into a CBC revision week

None of this requires new materials. It requires questions to answer and a schedule to answer them on. Past papers with marking schemes are the natural source of retrieval practice, which is why they are worth more than another set of notes once the content has been taught.

In every row the pattern is the same: produce, then check. The checking is quick. The producing is where the learning is, and it is the part that gets skipped when a learner is tired and a highlighter is within reach.

Starting this week: a five-minute setup

You do not need to redesign anything. Take your child's existing revision timetable and make three changes to it.

  1. Add ten minutes of blank-paper recall at the start of every session, covering whatever was studied in the previous session. Nothing else about the session changes.
  2. Split any session longer than an hour into two, placed on different days. The total time stays the same.
  3. End every session with five questions attempted with the book closed, then marked immediately.

That is the whole method. It adds no hours and no cost, and within about three weeks the difference usually shows up in practice papers. Expect your child to dislike it at first, because it replaces a comfortable activity with an uncomfortable one. That complaint is, awkwardly, the best evidence that it is working.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Judging a session by how it felt. Comfortable revision is usually ineffective revision. Difficulty during practice is the signal that learning is happening.
  • Making beautiful notes. Copying and colour-coding is transcription, not learning. If the notes already exist, use the time on questions instead.
  • Doing all of one topic then never returning. Without the spaced returns, most of it is gone within a fortnight.
  • Checking the answer too quickly. The struggle before you look is where the memory is built. Give it a full minute before opening the book.
  • Blocking question types. Twenty fraction questions in a row trains repetition, not selection.
  • Marathon weekend sessions. Four hours on Sunday is worse than four separate hours across the week, using exactly the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Is highlighting really useless?

Not useless, but rated low utility. It can help mark what to come back to. The error is treating the highlighting itself as the revision. What matters is what happens after the book closes.

How long should a revision session be?

For upper primary, 30 to 45 minutes with a break. For junior school, 45 to 60. Beyond that attention falls off and the extra time is largely wasted.

Does this work for Mathematics too?

Especially for Mathematics. Reading a worked example is recognition. Covering it and solving it yourself is retrieval. The gap between those two activities is most of the reason learners who "understood it in class" cannot do it in the paper.

What about flashcards?

Flashcards are practice testing in physical form, so they are one of the high-utility techniques, provided the learner genuinely attempts the answer before turning the card over.

My child says they revise better with music. Is that true?

For material that needs recall, background music with lyrics generally interferes. Instrumental music is less disruptive. If the choice is between revising with music and not revising, take the music.

How early should spaced practice start?

As early as possible, because the whole benefit comes from spacing. Starting eight weeks out gives room for four proper returns per topic. Starting two weeks out does not.

In summary

The evidence points in one direction and it is not the direction most revision timetables go. Close the book and write from memory. Return to each topic four times on a widening schedule rather than once at length. Mix the question types. Treat past papers as the main event rather than the final check.

The hours your child already spends are probably enough. It is the shape of those hours that needs changing, and the change costs nothing but a little discomfort.
