Running KJSEA Mocks in Term 3: A Practical Guide for Teachers

With KJSEA starting on 26 October, most junior schools will run at least one full mock in Term 3. The difference between a mock that lifts results and one that simply consumes a fortnight is almost entirely in how it is planned and what happens afterwards.

Schedule it to mirror the real thing

KJSEA runs Monday to Friday with the first session at 8.30am, and several days carry more than one paper. A mock sat as single papers on scattered afternoons trains none of the endurance the real week demands.

If a full week is not possible, prioritise reproducing Thursday. It is the heaviest day and the one that exposes stamina problems while there is still time to address them.

Invigilate as though it counts

Mocks lose most of their value when conditions are relaxed. Phones away, desks separated, silence, formal start and stop, and papers collected properly. Children who have only ever practised in a noisy room find the real silence unsettling, which is a strange thing to discover on 26 October.

Run a rehearsal of the answer sheet procedure too. KNEC holds a rehearsal on Friday 23 October for a reason, and a class that has already practised it wastes none of that session on basics.

Control the marking load

The usual failure is ambition. A full mock across nine learning areas produces a marking pile that takes so long the feedback arrives after it is useful.

Two approaches that work:

• Mark for diagnosis, not for a mark out of 100. For each question, record only whether the class got it right, partly right or wrong. A tally per question tells you what to reteach far faster than a set of totals.
• Split by paper across the department. One teacher marks one paper for the whole cohort rather than all papers for one class. It is faster and the standard is more consistent.

Turn results into two lessons, not a lecture

When the tally is done, pick the five questions the cohort handled worst and build two lessons around them. Not a walk through the whole paper, which loses the class within ten minutes.

Give the paper back after those lessons, not before. Handing back scripts first means every child reads their total and stops listening.

Watch for technique failures, not just content gaps

Mock scripts reveal patterns that no amount of teaching content will fix:

• Blank final questions, which is a pacing problem.
• Answers with no working in Mathematics 903, where the structured section carries 80 of 100 marks.
• Long answers to short command words in Social Studies 907.
• Observation and conclusion merged in Integrated Science 905/2.

Each of these is a ten minute fix taught once to a whole class, and each is worth more than another topic revision lesson.

Communicating results to parents

A mock percentage on its own worries parents without helping them. Send two or three named weak topics per child instead. Parents can act on a topic. They cannot act on 46 percent.
