Many Kenyan teachers already use ChatGPT or similar tools to save time on planning. Used well, they help you start faster. Used carelessly, they hand you a plan with the wrong outcomes or a learner's name in a chat history. This guide shows a simple way to get the benefit and keep control.
Can I use ChatGPT for lesson planning in Kenya?
Yes, as a drafting helper. The more detail you give, the better the draft. A weak prompt is "Write a lesson plan on fractions". A stronger one is "Write a 40-minute Grade 6 Mathematics lesson on adding fractions with unlike denominators, with a Kenyan example, three questions to check understanding, and a short activity in pairs." Then you edit, because you know your class and the AI does not.
What are the five checks before you use an AI plan?
Run every AI-written plan through these five checks before it reaches a classroom.
| Check | Ask yourself | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Syllabus match | Do the strand, sub-strand and learning outcomes match the official curriculum design for your grade? | AI can invent or mix up outcomes from other curricula |
| 2. Grade level | Is the language and difficulty right for your learners, not a Grade 9 text for Grade 5? | Drafts often pitch too high or too generic |
| 3. Facts and examples | Are the facts correct, and are the examples Kenyan and familiar to your learners? | AI can state wrong facts with full confidence |
| 4. Time and resources | Can you really do this in the lesson time with the materials you have? | Plans can assume tools or time you do not have |
| 5. Learner data | Did you keep learners' names, marks and other details out of the prompt? | Learner details are personal data and need care |
Check 1 matters most. A plan that sounds professional can still miss the outcomes your learners are assessed on. Keep your scheme of work beside you while you read it.
What should a good lesson-plan prompt include?
Give the AI the same facts you would give a colleague who was covering your class: the grade, the subject, the strand and sub-strand, the lesson length, what learners already know, the materials you have, and the format you want back. Ask for one thing at a time. If the first draft is too long or too hard, say so and ask for a shorter or simpler version. Keep a note of the prompts that work, and reuse them next term.
What is a ten-minute routine for using an AI draft?
- Write a prompt with the details above and no learner information.
- Read the draft once without changing anything.
- Run the five checks, with your scheme of work open.
- Fix or delete anything wrong, and add your own examples and questions.
- Save the final plan as your own document, because you are responsible for it.
What should I never paste into an AI tool?
Anything that identifies a learner: names, admission numbers, photos, marks, medical or family details. Keep prompts general, such as "a Grade 7 class of 40 with mixed reading levels". Kenya's Data Protection Act 2019 treats personal data seriously, and your school may have its own rules as well. The free AI course covers this in Module 9, on ethics, bias and privacy in the Kenyan context.
How does Lesson Plan AI help?
Lesson Plan AI is a tool built by CBC Edu Kenya for CBC lesson plans. You fill in a short form (subject, grade from PP1 to Grade 12, term, week, topic, and optionally strand, sub-strand and duration), and it produces a plan with strands, sub-strands, outcomes, key inquiry questions, core competencies and lesson development. The page says it takes about 10 seconds and gives 3 free plans. You can copy, print or save the result, and you should still run the five checks above.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Free allowance | 3 lesson plans, then you can go unlimited |
| Grades | PP1 to Grade 12 |
| You enter | Subject, grade, term, week, topic; optional strand, sub-strand, duration |
| You get | Strands, sub-strands, outcomes, key inquiry questions, core competencies, lesson development |
| Speed | About 10 seconds, according to the page |
| Your job | Edit the draft and run the five checks |

Frequently asked questions
Can I use ChatGPT to write my lesson plans?
Yes, for a first draft. Treat the output as a starting point, check it against the syllabus, correct it, and take responsibility for the final plan.
What should I never paste into an AI tool?
Never paste learners' names, marks, photos, admission numbers or any other personal details. Follow your school's own rules too.
Is Lesson Plan AI free?
The Lesson Plan AI page says you get 3 free lesson plans before you need to upgrade. Check the page for current terms.
Will AI replace teachers?
No. AI cannot know your learners, your classroom or your school. It can save time on the first draft, and you still teach and judge.
How do I learn to write better prompts?
Tell the AI the subject, grade, strand, time and learner level, and ask for the format you want. Modules 4 and 5 of the free AI course teach prompting step by step.
