Part 1 · Revision Notes Sample: Mathematics, Strand 1 (Numbers)

1.1 Order of Operations (BODMAS)

Key points. Work through Brackets, then Orders (powers and roots), then Division and Multiplication, then Addition and Subtraction.

Worked example. Evaluate  4 + 3 × (10 − 6)2
Brackets: (10 − 6) = 4 Powers: 42 = 16 Multiply: 3 × 16 = 48 Add: 4 + 48 = 52

1.2 LCM and GCD by prime factorisation

Key points. Write each number as a product of primes. The GCD takes the lowest powers of the shared primes; the LCM takes the highest powers of all primes.

Worked example. Find the GCD and LCM of 24 and 36.
24 = 23 × 3 36 = 22 × 32 GCD = 22 × 3 = 12 LCM = 23 × 32 = 72

1.3 Fractions

Worked example. Work out  23 + 14
Common denominator 12:  812 + 312 =  1112

Part 2 · Topical Questions with Marking Scheme Sample

  1. A shirt costing KSH 800 is discounted by 15%. Find the new price. Discount = 15100 × 800 = KSH 120  →  800 − 120 = KSH 680
  2. Find the compound interest on KSH 20,000 at 10% per annum for 2 years. Amount = 20,000 × (1.1)2 = 20,000 × 1.21 = 24,200  →  CI = 24,200 − 20,000 = KSH 4,200
  3. A ladder 13 m long rests with its foot 5 m from a wall. How high up does it reach? h2 = 132 − 52 = 169 − 25 = 144  →  h = √144 = 12 m

Part 3 · Mock Paper Sample question

Q. Share KSH 7,200 among A, B and C in the ratio 2 : 3 : 4.
Total parts = 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 One part = 7,200 ÷ 9 = 800 A = 2 × 800 = 1,600 B = 3 × 800 = 2,400 C = 4 × 800 = 3,200

That is one strand of one subject.

The full course has every strand of every subject, all three parts each. Pick what you need:

New: every subject now includes a detachable Answer Booklet. Print once, hand the learner the question pages, and keep the answer pages to mark later. All worked solutions shown in full, with proper maths (fractions, powers, roots).
