Integrated Science is one of the highest-weight subjects in KJSEA, and it is also one of the most learnable, because it blends Biology, Chemistry and Physics into clear, testable ideas. A Grade 9 learner who nails the core facts and can explain them in their own words will do well. This guide pulls together the must-know points across the five strands, drawn from our KJSEA Grade 7-9 Complete Revision Course (see a free sample first).
Integrated Science covers the whole Grade 7 to 9 cycle, so revise it as a build-up, not a last-minute cram. Here are the anchors for each strand.
1. Scientific Investigation
Know the steps of the scientific method: identify a problem, form a hypothesis, experiment, observe and record, draw a conclusion. Match apparatus to measurement: measuring cylinder for volume, thermometer for temperature, balance for mass, stopwatch for time. And know the basic safety rules, they come up as easy marks.
2. Mixtures, Elements and Compounds
Be able to classify a substance as an element, a compound, or a mixture, with an example of each. Know the separation methods and when to use them: filtration for an insoluble solid, evaporation for a dissolved solid, distillation for a pure liquid, and a magnet for magnetic materials. Remember acids turn blue litmus red, and bases turn red litmus blue.
3. Living Things and Their Environment
The cell is the basic unit of life; a plant cell has a cell wall and chloroplasts, an animal cell does not. Learn the seven life processes (MRS GREN: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition), the components of a balanced diet, and how common diseases like malaria and cholera are prevented. The word equation for respiration is worth memorising: glucose + oxygen gives energy + carbon dioxide + water.
4. Force and Energy
Force is a push or a pull measured in newtons. Energy changes from one form to another but is never destroyed, so be ready to name energy changes (a torch: chemical to electrical to light). Know the simple machines, the parts of a complete electric circuit, and that metals conduct electricity while plastic and rubber insulate.
5. The Earth and the Universe
Know the solar system basics (the Sun at the centre, Earth the third planet), the difference between weather and climate, and the four stages of the water cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection. Be able to explain why loam is the best soil for most crops and how to conserve the environment.
How the marks are earned
Integrated Science rewards learners who can explain in their own words and give clear examples. For structured questions, count the marks and give that many points. For definitions, be precise. And where a diagram is asked for, draw it neatly and label it fully, labels carry marks. To practise this properly, work through topical questions and mark against the scheme; every subject in our course now ships with a detachable answer booklet so you can do exactly that. Pair it with our guide to reading a marking scheme.

Frequently asked questions
Is Integrated Science hard?
It is very learnable if you revise the core facts across the cycle and practise explaining them. Understanding beats memorising.
How much of KJSEA is Integrated Science?
It is one of the nine examinable learning areas and carries significant weight, so it deserves regular revision time.
All 9 Grade 9 learning areas in one 144-page download: full-cycle notes, topical questions with marking schemes, and mock papers. KSH 400 instead of KSH 1,350 bought separately. See exactly what is inside or get the bundle here.
