Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610) is one of the most widely taken sciences among Kenyan IGCSE students, and one of the most misunderstood in terms of exam technique. Learners often know the content but lose marks on how the paper actually wants answers structured. Here is what the syllabus covers and where marks are typically lost.

Which Code, and Why It Matters

0610 is the standard Cambridge IGCSE Biology syllabus, graded A* to G, and the one almost all Kenyan international and IGCSE-curriculum schools enter. A separate code, 0970, exists as a 9-1 grading-scale version of the same content, used in specific markets where that scale applies. Unless your school has specifically told you otherwise, your child is almost certainly sitting 0610. Confirming the exact code on the school's entry confirmation matters because past papers and mark schemes are code-specific.

The Paper Structure

Core candidates typically sit Paper 1 (multiple choice) and Paper 3 (theory), while Extended candidates sit Paper 2 (multiple choice, extended) and Paper 4 (theory, extended), plus a practical-skills component (Paper 5 or 6, or the alternative-to-practical route depending on how the school is set up). The Extended papers reach into content Core candidates never see, including more depth on genetics, homeostasis and human biology systems, which is why the Core/Extended decision made by the school matters as much as revision itself.

Where Marks Are Actually Lost

Three patterns show up repeatedly in how this paper is marked:

  • Definitions without the qualifying detail. "Diffusion is the movement of particles" gets partial credit at best. The mark scheme wants "from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient." Biology examiners mark against precise wording, not general understanding.
  • Describe vs explain confusion. "Describe" questions want what happens, observable changes, trends, patterns. "Explain" questions want why it happens, the underlying mechanism. Learners who explain when asked to describe (or vice versa) answer a different question than the one asked, even when their biology knowledge is correct.
  • Command word blindness on data questions. Graph and experiment-based questions often ask learners to "suggest" an explanation for a result not directly taught in the syllabus. This is testing the ability to apply biological principles to an unfamiliar context, not recall. Learners who search their memory for the exact fact rather than reasoning from what they know tend to leave these blank or guess randomly.

A Practical Revision Split

Given the paper structure, revision time is best split three ways rather than working straight through the syllabus topic by topic: content recall (the biology itself), command-word practice (past paper questions sorted by "describe," "explain," "suggest," "compare"), and data-response practice specifically, since this is the section where strong content knowledge most often fails to translate into marks. Past papers from the last 3-4 series, marked strictly against the official mark scheme rather than self-assessed loosely, reveal this gap faster than any other revision method.
