How to Pass Junior Secondary Maths and English: A Grade 7–9 Study Plan

Practical strategies for Grade 7, 8, and 9 learners to improve in Mathematics and English — the two subjects that most determine KJSEA outcomes.

How to Pass Junior Secondary Maths and English: A Grade 7–9 Study Plan

Mathematics and English are the two highest-weight subjects in the KJSEA and the ones most Grade 7–9 learners struggle with. Here are proven strategies that Kenyan learners and teachers have found effective.

How to Pass Junior Secondary Mathematics

Understand Strands, Do Not Memorise

CBC Mathematics is competency-based — the KJSEA tests whether you can apply mathematical concepts, not just recall formulas. Focus on understanding why a formula works, not just how to use it.

Daily Practice Is Non-Negotiable

Mathematics is a skill, not knowledge. 20 minutes of problem-solving every day beats 3 hours every Saturday. Work through at least 5 problems per session on the current sub-strand.

Target Your Weakest Strand First

  • If Algebra is weak: practise forming and solving linear equations daily
  • If Geometry is weak: draw every shape by hand; never copy from the book
  • If Statistics is weak: collect real data from your class and calculate mean, median, mode by hand

Use Past Papers

KJSEA will follow the KICD assessment framework. Practise structured questions similar to the CBA format: start with 1-mark identification questions, move to 2-mark application, then 3-mark problem-solving.

How to Pass Junior Secondary English

Read Every Day

Read a Kenyan newspaper, a novel, or a magazine for 15 minutes daily. Comprehension improves fastest through volume reading, not through comprehension exercises alone.

Build Your Vocabulary Deliberately

Learn 5 new words per day. Write each in a sentence from your own life. Use the word in conversation within 24 hours — this cements retention.

Practise Essay Structure

Every essay needs: a hook opening, a clear thesis, 3 body paragraphs each with a topic sentence and evidence, and a conclusion. Practise this structure until it is automatic.
