What Grade 5 covers
Upper primary learning areas were also reduced by the 2024 rationalisation, which merged several previously separate subjects. In most schools your Grade 5 child is now working across English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Social Studies, Agriculture and Nutrition, Creative Arts and Religious Education. Home Science content sits inside Agriculture and Nutrition, and the old separate art, craft, music and physical education areas sit within Creative Arts.
What distinguishes Grade 5 from Grade 4 is not the list but the depth. Grade 4 introduced these as distinct subjects and spent much of the year on orientation. Grade 5 assumes the orientation happened and moves into substance, with longer written responses, multi-step problems and genuine practical work.
Why Term 3 Mathematics matters more than the rest
Term 3 of Grade 5 is where three strands that have been developing separately finally meet: fractions, decimals and percentages. Up to this point a child can survive treating them as three unrelated topics. From here they are treated as three ways of expressing the same idea, and everything in Grade 6 assumes the connection is understood.
A child who has not made that connection can still get individual questions right, which is what makes it so easy to miss. They convert a fraction to a decimal because they have memorised a procedure, not because they understand that a half, 0.5 and 50% are the same quantity wearing different clothes. Then Grade 6 asks them to compare two quantities expressed differently, or to work out a percentage of a fraction, and the memorised procedures do not reach.

The test to run this week. Ask your child which is larger, 3/5 or 0.55. A child who has understood will convert one form to the other and compare. A child who has memorised procedures without understanding will hesitate, because the question does not match any procedure they were taught. It takes thirty seconds and it tells you more than a term of report cards.
A worked example worth doing together
Here is the kind of question Term 3 builds towards, worked properly.
Question. A shopkeeper had 40 kg of maize. She sold 1/4 of it on Monday and 30% of the original amount on Tuesday. How much maize is left?
Step 1. Monday's sale. 1/4 of 40 kg is 40 divided by 4, which is 10 kg.
Step 2. Tuesday's sale. 30% of 40 kg is 30/100 times 40, which is 12 kg.
Step 3. Total sold. 10 plus 12 is 22 kg.
Step 4. Remaining. 40 minus 22 is 18 kg.
The common error: taking 30% of what was left after Monday rather than 30% of the original. The question says "of the original amount", and a child who does not read carefully loses the marks despite understanding percentages perfectly well.
Notice that the mathematical difficulty here is low. The difficulty is holding a two-part problem together and reading the wording precisely, which is exactly what Grade 5 is training and what Grade 6 will assume.
School-based assessment starts to count
This is the part most Grade 5 parents do not know. School-based assessment is not simply the school's own record-keeping. Scores recorded in upper primary form part of the assessment picture that follows a learner, and Grade 4 and 5 work contributes to the record that Grade 6 and KPSEA sit on top of.
Practically, this means the projects, practical work and continuous assessment tasks your child brings home in Grade 5 are not throwaway exercises. They are marked, recorded and retained. A project handed in late, or thrown together on the final evening, costs real marks in a record that does not reset.
The behaviour to build now is simple and it is about process rather than ability. When a project is set, agree a date to start that is not the night before. Break it into three parts across the available time. Keep the work in one place. These sound like trivial habits and they are the difference between a child who arrives in Grade 9 able to manage a KJSEA project and one who cannot. Where Grade 5 learners lose marks
Once again the content itself is the smallest slice. More than half the losses are about how an answer is read and written, which is encouraging, because those are teachable in a way that is quick and cheap.
Structuring an answer, concretely
The rule that fixes the largest single category is this: look at the marks, then write that many distinct points. A question worth three marks wants three separate things, not one thing said at length. Kenyan learners at this age routinely write a good paragraph containing one idea, and receive one mark for it.
Practise it directly. Take any past paper question, cover the answer, and ask your child how many points the question wants before they write anything. That one habit, applied across Science, Social Studies, Agriculture and Religious Education, is worth more than any amount of extra content revision.
Take Wafula, a Grade 5 learner in Bungoma
Wafula's Term 2 report showed him at ME in Mathematics and AE in Science and Social Studies. His father assumed the science content was too hard and started buying revision books.
When they looked at the actual scripts, the pattern was uniform across both subjects. For every question worth three or four marks, Wafula had written one long, correct sentence. He knew the material. He was answering as though each question wanted one idea explained well, which is a perfectly reasonable thing for a ten year old to assume if nobody has told them otherwise.
His father spent two weeks doing nothing but counting marks before answering. Four marks, four points, each on its own line. No new content was studied. His next assessment moved both subjects to ME, and the Mathematics improved as well, because the same habit applies to showing working.
Reading in Grade 5 is not finished business
By upper primary most parents have stopped reading with their child, on the reasonable assumption that a Grade 5 learner can read independently. They can. What has changed is what they are being asked to read.
Grade 5 comprehension passages contain inference, implied meaning and vocabulary that does not appear in conversation. Science and Social Studies questions are written in a register that is quite unlike everyday speech, using words like "state", "describe", "explain" and "compare" that each demand something different. A learner who does not know that "state" wants a short fact while "explain" wants a reason will answer both the same way and lose marks in one of them.
Ten minutes of reading a day remains worthwhile at this age, and the most useful version is reading something factual and discussing it. Newspapers work well. So does reading a Science passage together and asking what each command word is actually asking for. That habit costs nothing and pays across every learning area simultaneously.

Spend one evening on that table. Take six past paper questions, one for each command word, and have your child say what the question wants before writing anything. It is among the highest-return hours available in upper primary, and it applies to every learning area for the rest of their schooling.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating Grade 5 as a rest year between Grade 4 and KPSEA. It is where the Grade 6 foundations are laid and where SBA records accumulate.
- Assuming correct answers mean understanding. Run the 3/5 versus 0.55 test before you conclude fractions are fine.
- Letting projects be done the night before. They carry marks and they build the habit that KJSEA projects will need in four years.
- Writing one long answer for a multi-mark question. The single most expensive habit at this level.
- Buying content revision for a technique problem. Look at a marked script before deciding what is wrong.
- Ignoring Creative Arts and Agriculture and Nutrition. They are assessed and they include practical work that is easy to score well in.
- Leaving reading behind. Comprehension demands rise every year and reading practice should not stop because a child can read.
What to use at home
The Grade 5 home routine is modest: fifteen minutes of reading, a short set of Mathematics problems most days with working shown, and the mark-counting habit applied to whatever written work comes home.

How much homework should Grade 5 have?
Around 45 minutes to an hour on a school night, including reading. Consistently more than that is worth raising with the school.
Should we start KPSEA revision in Grade 5?
Not formal revision. Fix gaps instead, particularly the fraction, decimal and percentage connection, so that Grade 6 can be spent on preparation rather than on repair.
What if my child finds fractions genuinely difficult?
Go back to physical quantity. Cut fruit, divide beans, fold paper. Fractions become abstract too early for many learners and the fix is nearly always to make them concrete again.
