KPSEA English: A Grade 6 Revision Guide (Comprehension, Grammar, Writing)

English rewards habits you can build in weeks. Here is how to revise KPSEA comprehension, grammar and writing for Grade 6, and the fastest way to lift the mark.

KPSEA English: A Grade 6 Revision Guide (Comprehension, Grammar, Writing)

English carries weight in KPSEA both as a subject in its own right and because strong reading and writing help a Grade 6 learner in every other paper. The encouraging news is that English rewards habits you can build at home in a few weeks. This guide breaks the subject into the skills KPSEA tests and shows you how to revise each one, using our KPSEA Grade 4-6 Complete Revision Course (with a free sample).

KPSEA English draws on the whole Grade 4 to 6 cycle, so revise across all of it rather than only the latest term. Here are the areas to focus on.

Reading and comprehension

Comprehension is where careful readers pick up marks. Teach your child to read the passage twice, once for the general idea, then again for detail, before answering. Answers should be in full sentences and in the child's own words unless the question says to quote. When a word's meaning is asked, work it out from the sentence around it rather than guessing.

Grammar (language use)

Grammar is the most improvable part of the paper because the rules are fixed. Prioritise:

  • Tenses: keep them consistent within a piece of writing.
  • Plurals: regular and irregular (child to children, leaf to leaves).
  • Punctuation: capital letters, full stops, commas, and the apostrophe for possession.
  • Subject-verb agreement: a singular subject takes a singular verb.

A few minutes of targeted grammar practice each day lifts scores quickly.

Writing

KPSEA writing includes short functional and creative pieces. Teach a simple structure: plan, write, check. Plan two or three ideas first, write in clear paragraphs with correct tense, then check for punctuation and spelling. For functional writing, know the basic formats. For creative writing, a clear beginning, middle and end beats a rushed, longer piece.

Vocabulary and reading widely

The single fastest way to raise an English mark is reading. A child who reads storybooks daily meets more words, absorbs correct sentence patterns, and writes more fluently, without it feeling like revision. Ten minutes of reading in the evening is time well spent.

Practise, then mark against the scheme

Knowing the rules is not enough; your child needs to apply them under exam conditions and then see where marks were won or lost. That is why every subject in our course now comes with a detachable answer booklet: print the questions, keep the answers, and mark afterwards. Our guide to reading a marking scheme shows you how to award marks the way a real marker does, and the holiday timetable shows how to fit it all in.

Everything for KPSEA in one place

The KPSEA Grade 4-6 Complete Revision Course covers English and all five core subjects, notes, topical questions with marking schemes, and mock papers, for KSH 300 (or KSH 150 per subject). See the free sample, and join our free Facebook community for more revision tips.

Frequently asked questions

How can I help if my English is not strong?

You do not need perfect English to help. Ask your child to read to you, listen for clear sentences, and use the marking scheme in our course to check their written answers.

What lifts an English mark fastest?

Daily reading plus short, focused grammar practice. Together they improve comprehension, vocabulary and writing at once.
