KJSEA English 901/2: How the 50 Marks Are Split and Where to Win Them

Composition and Literary Analysis is paper 901/2. It runs for 1 hour 45 on Monday 26 October, the opening day of KJSEA, immediately after the English Language paper 901/1.

It is five questions and 50 marks. What most revision plans miss is that those 50 marks are not spread evenly, so an hour spent on poetry and an hour spent on composition are not worth the same.

The mark split

Composition alone is worth three times poetry. If your child has been revising by reading set texts and skipping writing practice, the plan is upside down.

Composition is 15 marks and it is trainable

Composition is the most improvable section in the paper, because it rewards structure rather than inspiration. A child who plans for four minutes writes a better composition than one who starts immediately, almost without exception.

A reliable approach:

• Four minutes planning. Beginning, three developments, ending. Written as short phrases in the margin.
• One idea per paragraph. Markers reward organisation they can see.
• Vary sentence length deliberately. A short sentence after two long ones reads as control.
• Leave three minutes to read it back. Most lost marks here are agreement, tense and spelling, all catchable.

Handwriting matters more than anyone likes to admit. A marker working through hundreds of scripts gives the benefit of the doubt more readily to writing they can read comfortably.

Oral literature carries as much as prose

Oral literature is worth 10 marks, the same as the prose text and the same as the play. It is also the section children most often treat as general knowledge rather than a studied topic.

Revise it as a set of categories with features and functions: narratives, songs, proverbs, riddles, tongue twisters. For each, be able to state what it is, give a Kenyan example, and say what social purpose it serves. That structure answers most of what the section asks.

Prose and play: quote, do not summarise

The commonest error in both sections is retelling the story. The question is almost never asking what happened. It is asking what a character reveals, how a theme develops, or what a technique achieves.

Teach a three part answer: make the point, support it with a brief reference to the text, then explain how the reference proves the point. The explanation is where the marks live and it is the part children leave out.

Poetry is 5 marks, so treat it accordingly

Poetry is the smallest section. It still needs to be answered well, but it does not deserve a third of the revision time. Know the common devices, be able to comment on tone and mood, and practise writing tightly, because 5 marks does not reward a long answer.

Do not forget 901/1 sits first

English Language 901/1 is 50 multiple choice questions in 1 hour 40, and it is sat earlier the same day. Two English papers in one day is heavy going, and children who have never done back to back papers in practice find the second one much harder than expected.

At least twice before the exam, sit 901/1 and 901/2 in the same morning with the real gap between them. Stamina is a skill and it can be trained in three sessions.
