KJSEA Religious Education 908, 909 and 910: The Last Paper of the Week

Religious Education is sat on Friday 30 October, the final day of KJSEA, on a morning shared with two other papers. Being last has consequences worth planning for.

KJSEA Religious Education 908, 909 and 910: The Last Paper of the Week

Religious Education is examined as 908 for CRE, 909 for IRE and 910 for HRE. Whichever your child sits, it runs 1 hour 30 on Friday 30 October, the final day of the KJSEA week.

That Friday also carries Pre Technical Studies 912/1 and the Integrated Science practical based paper 905/2. Three papers on the last day of a five day assessment week is a real consideration, and it is not only about knowledge.

The Friday problem

Friday 30 OctoberPaperDuration
Morning sessionPre Technical Studies 912/11 hour 40
Same dayReligious Education 908, 909 or 9101 hour 30
Same dayIntegrated Science practical based 905/21 hour

By Friday your child has already written for four days. Concentration is genuinely harder, and the mistakes that appear are tiredness mistakes: misreading questions, answering the wrong part, and running out of time on a paper they would have handled easily on Monday.

The practical response is to build endurance in the final fortnight. Sitting three papers in one day at least once before the exam is unpleasant and extremely useful.

What the paper rewards

Religious Education is a recall and application paper. It asks for accurate knowledge of texts, teachings and practices, and then for that knowledge to be applied to situations.

  • Be specific. A named reference is worth more than a general statement about what a faith teaches.
  • Match points to marks. A 5 mark question wants five distinct points, each on its own line.
  • Apply, do not just recite. Application questions ask how a teaching guides behaviour in a described situation. The link to the situation is where the mark sits.
  • Use the correct terms. Precise vocabulary signals competence and is often required.

A revision method that suits this paper

Religious Education responds well to structured summary sheets, one per topic, each holding:

  1. The core teaching in one sentence.
  2. Two or three specific references or examples.
  3. Two ways the teaching applies to everyday life.

That third line is the one children skip and the one application questions depend on. Writing it forces the connection that the paper asks for.

Practise writing lists, not essays

A common pattern is a child who knows the content well and writes long flowing paragraphs. Markers award points, and points buried in prose are easy to miss. Numbered or clearly separated points are read faster and credited more reliably.

Ninety minutes is comfortable for this paper if answers are the right length. It is tight if every answer is three times longer than needed.

Finish the week well

There is a temptation to treat the last paper as a formality because the end is in sight. It carries the same 8 points as every other learning area, and it contributes to the same 72 point total.

Our six week countdown timetable places Religious Education in week 4, and the SBA guide explains how the written 60 percent combines with the assessment already banked.

For content across all nine learning areas including CRE, IRE and HRE, the KJSEA Complete Revision Course provides notes and predictive papers with a separate answer booklet, and our marking guide covers scoring structured answers at home.
