KJSEA Agriculture 906/1: The Written Paper, and the Project That Is Already Done

Agriculture appears twice in KJSEA. The project, 906/2, was assessed between May and July 2026. The written paper, 906/1, runs 1 hour 40 on Wednesday 28 October, the same day as Mathematics.

That split matters because only one half can still be influenced, and the other half is the one most often mislaid.

This guide walks Grade 9 parents and learners through both halves: how to check the project mark, what the written paper asks for, how to turn the finished project into revision, and how to prepare for a heavy Wednesday.

Check the project mark before revising anything

Projects are the component most likely to sit in a file rather than in a submission, because they are assessed outside normal lesson time and sometimes by a teacher who has since changed class. One message asking the class teacher to confirm in writing that the 906/2 mark was submitted is worth more than an evening of revision. See the 40 per cent nobody checks.

Do it before schools close on Friday 23 October. Teachers are easier to reach while school is open, and if anything is missing, there is still a chance to raise it calmly through the school. Asking at the same time about the Creative Arts and Sports and Pre Technical Studies projects saves a second message.

What the written paper asks for

Expect roughly 30 multiple choice questions followed by a structured section. The multiple choice rewards breadth, the structured section rewards precision.

• Name things correctly. A tool, a pest, a breed or a practice described rather than named usually does not score.
• Match points to marks. A 3 mark question wants three distinct points, each on its own line, not one point explained three ways.
• Watch the command word. "State" wants the fact alone. "Explain" wants reasons, with because or therefore. Writing a paragraph for a "state" question spends four minutes earning one mark.
• Diagrams score. Where one is asked for, draw it in pencil and label it. A labelled diagram often carries marks a paragraph does not, and takes less time.

Splitting the 1 hour 40

A simple plan stops the multiple choice section from eating into the structured questions, which usually carry more marks each.

These timings are a guide, not a rule. The point is to decide in advance, so your child is not discovering with ten minutes left that half the structured section is untouched.

Practice questions (our own, not official KNEC items)

1. State two methods of controlling soil erosion on a sloping farm. (2 marks)
   A good answer: Terracing. Planting cover crops. Two points, two lines. Contour ploughing or mulching would also be acceptable points.
2. Name two breeds of dairy cattle. (2 marks)
   A good answer: Friesian. Jersey. Writing "cows that give a lot of milk" earns nothing, because the question asks for names.
3. Explain two reasons why a farmer should rotate crops. (4 marks)
   A good answer develops each point: "Crop rotation helps control pests and diseases because the pests of one crop do not find their host the next season." "It helps maintain soil fertility because different crops use different nutrients."
4. State two functions of proteins in the body. (2 marks)
   A good answer: Body building. Repair of worn out tissues. This kind of question reminds learners that the learning area covers nutrition as well as farming.

Use these as a model for marking at home: count the separate correct points, compare them with the marks, and do not award a mark for a description where a name was asked for.

Use the project you already did

The most efficient revision here is not notes. Have your child talk through the project: what they grew or raised, what choices they made, what went wrong and what they would change. Almost every applied question on the written paper can be answered from that reflection, and it is far more memorable than a list.

Prompts that work well at the kitchen table:

• How did you prepare the land or the housing, and which tools did you use?
• What pests, diseases or weeds did you notice, and how did you deal with them?
• How did you water, feed or care for what you grew or raised?
• How did you keep records, and what did they show?
• If you were selling what you produced, how would you do it?

Write the answers on one page in your child's words. Then add the topics from the class notes that the project did not touch, so the revision covers the whole learning area.

Wednesday is a heavy day

Mathematics 903 runs two hours the same day. Practise Agriculture immediately after a long paper at least once, because sitting it fresh on a Saturday morning does not simulate the real thing.

On the day itself, a good breakfast, water and a short rest between papers help more than last minute reading. A child who has just finished Mathematics should not spend the break going over answers with friends. That conversation can wait until the evening, or until the week is over.
