Sparrow the Bird-Scaring Robot: How Agoro Sare Students Built Real Answers to Kenya's Farm Losses

Learners from Agoro Sare High School in Homa Bay County have built a robotic bird-control device and a solar-powered planting machine that drew national attention at the Kaimosi Agricultural Expo 2026, where the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) sponsored the school's showcase, reports Education News.

The two inventions on show

The first device, nicknamed "Sparrow", is a robotic bird-control system aimed at one of the most destructive pests in Kenyan grain farming: the quelea bird. Quelea flocks can strip a rice or wheat field in hours, and farmers in schemes such as Ahero and Bura lose a significant share of their harvest to them every season. Sparrow detects the birds, scares them away, and sprays deterrent chemicals, protecting rice and wheat farms without a farmer standing guard all day.

The second invention is an Automated Solar-Powered Water and Seed Sower Machine. It handles ploughing, harrowing, seed dispensing, covering, irrigation, and fertiliser application in a single unit, and even includes a security coding system to deter theft. Because it runs on solar power, it targets exactly the constraint that locks many smallholders out of mechanisation: the cost of fuel.

The machines were developed by students Godwins Ouma and Vincent Omwamba, working with their Agriculture and Biology teacher Danielle Winyo, under Chief Principal Dr Isack Okeyo Ogol.

KICD's role, and why the expo matters

The showcase happened at the Kaimosi Agricultural Research and Training Centre in Nandi County, where the Kaimosi Agricultural Expo 2026 was officially closed on 7 August by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi. KICD sponsored Agoro Sare's participation and provided the exhibition platform.

KICD Chief Executive Prof Charles Ong'ondo said the institute "provides a platform for innovations and exposes institutions such as Agoro Sare High School to relevant agencies", a deliberate part of promoting learner-centred innovation under the competency-based curriculum. Student innovator Godwins Ouma put it more bluntly: "Kenyans are talented, but many innovations remain unexploited."

Why this matters for Kenyan families

This is what the competency-based approach looks like when it works: learners identify a real community problem (crop losses to quelea birds and the high cost of farm labour), then apply science, technology, and agriculture competencies to build a working solution. It is a long way from memorising notes for an exam.

For parents, especially in farming counties, the message is that classroom projects can carry genuine economic weight. A learner who can prototype a bird deterrent or a solar sower is building exactly the skills the Senior School STEM pathway is designed to deepen from Grade 10.

What teachers can borrow from Agoro Sare

The model here is replicable in any school. Start from a local problem, not a textbook example: pests, post-harvest losses, water shortage, or soil erosion, depending on your county. Anchor the project in the relevant Agriculture and Integrated Science strands and sub-strands, let learners collect real data (crop damage counts, bird activity patterns), and have them design, test, and improve a low-cost prototype. Partnerships help: agricultural extension officers, nearby research centres, and county shows can give learners authentic feedback the classroom cannot.

Documenting the project also feeds directly into assessment. Design journals, data tables, and prototype iterations are exactly the kind of evidence CBC portfolios and rubrics are built around.

Practical steps parents can take now

First, try an "innovation journal" at home. Each week, have your child record one problem they notice around the home or farm, brainstorm possible solutions, and note anything they tried. It mirrors the reflective practice the curriculum rewards, and it gives teachers something concrete to build on.

Second, keep the school-side foundations strong. Projects like Sparrow stand on ordinary classroom mastery of science and agriculture content.
