Updated 3 Nov 2026.
Direct answer: KNEC's chairman said on 2 November 2026 that this year's KCSE is the second-last under the current system. KNEC's chief executive has said the 2027 sitting will be the final KCSE under 8-4-4. After this year, the 2027 KCSE is the last one scheduled, so families who want to sit or repeat the exam should plan now.
What was reported on 2 November
The 2026 KCSE runs from 19 October to 20 November 2026, according to a KNEC circular reported by Education News Hub. On Monday 2 November, Capital FM, carried by allAfrica, reported that KNEC chairman Prof Julius Nyabundi oversaw the opening of the exam container at the Kisumu Central Deputy County Commissioner's office, where materials were released to centre managers.
In Kisumu County, 25,849 candidates are registered across 246 senior schools. Prof Nyabundi said the process started smoothly and that KNEC had received no reports of irregularities since the exam period began. He also noted that this is the second-last KCSE under the current system. The county director of education, Magare Onduso, said each school has two security officers who stay until the exam materials are returned.
Why "second-last" matters
The Standard reported on 30 June 2026 that KNEC chief executive David Njeng'ere said: "This will be the last KCSE examination under the 8-4-4 system." The same report gave 1,049,276 registrations for the 2026 KCSE, the first time the KCSE entry has passed one million, up from 995,860 candidates who sat in 2025.

What it means for parents and teachers
If your child is sitting KCSE now
The "second-last" label does not change the rules in the exam room. Keep following the school and KNEC instructions, and use the gaps between papers well. Our KCSE 2026 parents guide and our post on the record KCSE entry give more background. The sources cited here do not give a results date, so check knec.ac.ke for announcements.
If you know a school leaver or adult who wants to sit or repeat KCSE
The KNEC chief executive warned in August 2025 that after 2027 completing or repeating KCSE "will be extremely difficult", reports the Eastleigh Voice. That report also said a proposed July sitting was suspended pending a court ruling. We could not confirm how that ended, and the June 2026 Standard report gives no July schedule, so ask KNEC or the county KNEC office for the current registration route, dates and fees before planning around it.
If your child is in Form Three this year
Njeng'ere urged principals to identify all Form Three learners in 2026 who lack a KCPE certificate, and warned that failure to comply "could delay or affect registration for the 2027 KCSE examination". Ask the school whether your child's KCPE certificate is on file. Learners without one are the group for whom KNEC announced the September 2026 KCSE Qualifying Test.
If your child is in the CBC pathway
The end of KCSE does not affect learners who are already in the competency-based system. Their route runs through senior school, and our Grade 10 pathways guide explains it. For Form Four leavers planning ahead, the six-month calendar from KCSE to university is a useful companion.
For teachers and principals
Check your Form Three register against KCPE certificates now, and tell families early what is missing. Guidance on any qualifying-test application should come from KNEC, not from rumour on social media.

The reports cited here do not give 2027 registration dates or fees. An August 2025 report said people who missed KCSE could register in 2026 or 2027. Confirm the current process with KNEC.
What if a Form Three learner has no KCPE certificate?
The Standard reported on 30 June 2026 that KNEC would hold a KCSE Qualifying Test in September 2026 for such learners, with an application letter and supporting documents such as report cards. Exact dates and fees were not stated, so ask the school and KNEC.
When will the 2026 KCSE results be released?
The sources used for this article do not give a date. Watch KNEC and Ministry of Education announcements.
