Who this is for
- Parents and guardians of children who sat KPSEA in October 2026 and will start Grade 7 in January 2027.
- Families deciding whether to stay in the same comprehensive school or move to a different junior school.
- Anyone who wants a practical list for December and for the first week of junior school.
Your child has finished KPSEA, primary school is behind them, and in January 2027 they become a junior school learner. For many families this is the first big school move since PP1, and the questions come quickly. Does KPSEA decide where my child goes? Do I need to apply anywhere? What will Grade 7 cost? What changes in the classroom, and what should we do in the first week?
This guide answers those questions using what the Ministry of Education and KNEC have actually said, separates what is decided from what is not yet announced for 2027, and ends with a December checklist and a first-week checklist you can print. If you want the emotional and study-habit side of the move, read our earlier guide to the Grade 6 to junior school transition as well. This one is about admission and logistics.
Information current as of November 2026. The Ministry of Education has not yet published the 2027 school calendar or a Grade 7 admission circular for 2027, and KNEC has not announced when 2026 KPSEA results will be released. Where a new circular differs from this page, the circular wins.
Key takeaways
- KPSEA is not a pass or fail exam and does not decide junior school placement. Every learner moves on to Grade 7.
- Junior schools are domiciled in existing primary schools under the presidential directive that set up comprehensive schools. Most children simply continue in the same compound.
- KPSEA still matters later: it is reported to make up 20 percent of the composite score used for senior school placement after Grade 9.
- Public junior school is free of tuition fees. Budget for uniform, stationery and transport.
- Last year, KPSEA reports came out on 13 January 2026, after Grade 7 had started. Do not wait for results before sending your child to school.
How Grade 7 admission works
When the competency-based curriculum reached junior school, the government had to decide where Grades 7, 8 and 9 would sit. President William Ruto's directive, following the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform, was that junior schools be domiciled in existing primary schools. The working party's interim report also said Grade 6 KPSEA would not be used for placement in junior school. The Ministry then directed that all candidates who sat KPSEA be allowed to join Grade 7 in the junior schools hosted by their own primary schools.
For a family in 2027, that means three possible routes.
| Your situation | What normally happens | What you do now |
|---|---|---|
| Child is in a public primary school with a junior school | Child continues into Grade 7 in the same school. No application needed. | Ask the school for the Grade 7 requirements list and reporting date. |
| You want a different public junior school (a move, a closer school, a day or boarding preference) | Admission depends on space at the receiving school; the learner's record must be moved on the Ministry's learner data system. | Visit the receiving school's head teacher in November, ask about space and what documents they need, and tell your current school early. |
| Child is in a private primary school | Many private schools run their own junior section. Fees and admission are set by the school. | Get the 2027 fee structure in writing. If moving to a public school, start the same process as above. |
A note on records. The Ministry announced that its new learner information system, KEMIS, would replace NEMIS and go live on 9 January 2026. The Standard reported in September 2026 that the transition had hit technical problems. If you are moving schools, ask both head teachers to confirm the transfer has been completed on the system, so your child's assessment record follows them. A learner's KNEC assessment number, issued in Grade 3, stays with them to the end of senior school.
What KPSEA does and does not decide
Parents often hear two opposite things: that KPSEA "does not count", and that it "decides everything". Neither is right.
- It does not decide whether your child goes to Grade 7. Every learner transitions.
- It does not decide which junior school your child attends. That is decided by where the child is enrolled and where there is space.
- It does count later. As our explainer on how KJSEA and KPSEA scores are calculated sets out from KNEC's publicly reported breakdown, the composite used for senior school placement at the end of Grade 9 draws 20 percent from KPSEA, 20 percent from Grade 7 and 8 school-based assessment and 60 percent from KJSEA.
- It is a map of strengths and gaps. The report tells you and the Grade 7 teachers where your child needs support.
For a side-by-side comparison of the two assessments, see KJSEA vs KPSEA explained.
When will 2026 KPSEA results be out?
KNEC has not announced a date. For context, in 2025 the Ministry had said results would come in December, but KNEC released the 2025 KPSEA reports on 13 January 2026, with parents directed to the KPSEA results portal (kpsea.knec.ac.ke) and schools to the CBA portal. Schools had reopened on 5 January 2026. So plan for your child to start Grade 7 before you see the report, and use it in the first weeks of term when it arrives. Our guide on how to read a KPSEA or KJSEA result slip explains the performance levels.
What changes in Grade 7
The biggest change is not the building; it is the timetable. In Grade 6 your child had one or two teachers who knew them well. In Grade 7 they meet a different teacher for each learning area, carry more books, and are expected to manage their own notes.
| Area | Grade 6 | Grade 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Learning areas | Primary learning areas, KPSEA assessed five papers | Nine learning areas: English; Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language; Mathematics; Integrated Science; Social Studies; Religious Education; Pre-Technical Studies; Agriculture and Nutrition; Creative Arts and Sports |
| Teachers | Mostly one class teacher | A teacher per learning area |
| Assessment | School-based assessment plus KPSEA | School-based assessment that counts towards the Grade 9 composite |
| Homework | Usually one or two subjects a night | From several teachers, with projects and practical work |
| Fees (public school) | No tuition fees | No tuition fees; government capitation per learner |
Two things surprise Grade 7 parents. The first is how much Grade 7 school-based assessment matters: it is part of the 20 percent from Grades 7 and 8 that feeds senior school placement, so Grade 7 is not a warm-up year. Our guide to why Grades 7 and 8 are not rest years explains this. The second is Pre-Technical Studies and Agriculture and Nutrition, which have practical work and may need materials from home. Our walkthrough of the Grade 7 KICD curriculum design shows what each learning area covers.
Costs for Grade 7 in January 2027
Public junior school charges no tuition fees. For Term 1 2026, the Ministry's guidelines, as reported by The Standard, gave each junior school learner KSh 4,193.07 in capitation, plus a basic allocation per school, and head teachers were warned against charging lunch fees or other levies. The 2027 rates have not been published. What families do pay for is:
- Uniform. Many junior schools have a uniform different from the primary section. Ask whether it is required in January or can be phased in, and ask for the specification so you can buy from any supplier, as a 2023 Ministry circular requires.
- Exercise books and stationery. One book per learning area is the usual minimum, plus a mathematical set and a ruler.
- Practical materials for Pre-Technical Studies, Agriculture and Creative Arts, only if the school lists them.
- Transport, if the junior school is further than the primary one.
Our Term 1 2027 back-to-school budget guide, published this week, has a worked table that includes a Grade 7 learner.
Your December checklist
- Confirm the school. Same comprehensive school, or a different one? If different, have the receiving head teacher's confirmation in writing.
- Get the Grade 7 requirements list and the reporting date once the school has it. The 2027 calendar is not out yet; see our 2027 school calendar guide for what has been announced.
- Collect documents in one envelope: birth certificate copy, the child's assessment number, the latest school report, any medical notes, and transfer papers if moving.
- Buy and label exercise books, one per learning area, with the learning area name on the cover.
- Practise the new journey if the school or route has changed. Do it once at the real time of day.
- Set a homework corner and time. A fixed 45 to 60 minutes after school is a good starting point for Grade 7; adjust when you see the school's homework pattern.
- Keep reading going. Twenty minutes a day over the holiday stops the January slide. Our Grade 7 and 8 holiday plan has a light weekly structure.
- Talk about the change. Ask what your child is looking forward to and what worries them. Most worries are about new teachers and finding classrooms.
The first-week checklist
| Day | For your child | For you |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive early. Find the classroom, the toilets and the notice board. Copy the timetable. | Hand in documents. Get the class teacher's name and the school's official contact. |
| Day 2 | Write each teacher's name and learning area inside the cover of the right book. | Check the timetable at home and pack the bag together for tomorrow. |
| Day 3 | Start a homework diary: date, learning area, task, due date. | Sit with them for the first homework session. Do not do it for them. |
| Day 4 | Note any materials teachers ask for. | Buy only what teachers have actually asked for. |
| Day 5 | Tidy books and loose papers into a folder. | Ask: which lesson was best this week, and which was hardest? Write the answers down. |
A case study: Wanjiku in Nyeri
Wanjiku sat KPSEA at her public primary school in Nyeri in October 2026. The school has a junior section, so she stays. In November her mother asks the head teacher for the Grade 7 list; it includes a new junior school sweater and skirt, nine exercise books and a mathematical set. Her mother buys the books in early December and the uniform from a tailor in town who matches the specification, at a lower price than the outfitter a friend suggested. Over the holiday Wanjiku reads for twenty minutes most days and practises one page of mixed sums a week. On her first day she copies her timetable and writes each teacher's name in her books. In the second week the KPSEA report arrives on the portal: she is strong in Mathematics and English and approaching expectations in Integrated Science. Her mother shares that with the Integrated Science teacher at the first parents' meeting, and they agree on one practice task a week. Nothing dramatic. Exactly what a good start looks like.
Common mistakes
- Waiting for KPSEA results to report. Last year they came after term had started.
- Paying anyone for a "Grade 7 placement". There is no paid placement into a public junior school.
- Moving schools without completing the record transfer. Confirm it with both heads.
- Treating Grade 7 as a rest year. Its school-based assessment counts.
- Buying everything before the list arrives. Junior school lists differ from primary lists.
- Trusting a 2027 calendar from social media. It has not been published.
Frequently asked questions
Does KPSEA decide which junior school my child joins?
No. The government said KPSEA would not be used for junior school placement, and learners join Grade 7 in the junior school hosted by their primary school unless the family arranges a move.
Can my child fail KPSEA and repeat Grade 6?
KPSEA is not a pass or fail assessment. Every learner moves on to Grade 7.
Do I pay school fees for Grade 7 in a public school?
No tuition fees. Public junior schools are funded by capitation. You pay for uniform, stationery and any transport.
When does Grade 7 start in 2027?
The Ministry has not yet published the 2027 calendar. Under the 2026 calendar the long holiday ends on 1 January 2027, so expect an early January start and confirm with your school when the circular is out.
Does KPSEA count for anything?
Yes. It is reported to make up 20 percent of the composite score used for senior school placement after Grade 9, and it shows where your child needs support.
How do I move my child to a different junior school?
Ask the receiving school's head teacher about space and required documents, inform your current school, and make sure the learner's record is transferred on the Ministry's system.
Conclusion
The move from Grade 6 to Grade 7 in January 2027 is simpler on paper than many parents fear. Every learner transitions, most stay in the same compound, public junior school charges no tuition fees, and KPSEA results, when they arrive, are a map rather than a gate. The work that makes a difference is practical: confirm the school, get the real list, sort documents in December, and set up the timetable, book labels and homework diary in the first week.
