Grade 10 Pathway Selection 2026: STEM vs Arts & Sports vs Social Sciences vs Languages — A Parent's Honest Guide

The complete guide to Grade 10 pathway selection 2026 — STEM, Arts and Sports Science, and Social Sciences explained with subject combinations, KJSEA placement scores, school tiers, and the 30 June 2026 deadline.

Grade 10 Pathway Selection 2026: STEM vs Arts & Sports vs Social Sciences vs Languages — A Parent's Honest Guide

Kenya's education system is at a genuinely historic crossroads. In January 2026, the very first cohort of CBC learners stepped into Grade 10 — Senior Secondary School — and faced a decision that no Kenyan student had encountered before: choosing a learning pathway that will shape the next three years of study and, in large part, the trajectory of their adult life. For parents and students currently in Grade 9, the pathway selection process is no longer a future abstraction. It is happening now, and the deadline for submitting subject combinations is 30 June 2026. This guide explains exactly what the three pathways contain, how KJSEA results feed into placement, and what you must do before the window closes.

Why This Decision Matters More Than It Appears

Under the old 8-4-4 system, subject choice was relatively narrow and the final KCSE exam decided almost everything. Under CBC, the three-year Senior Secondary pathway (Grades 10–12) determines which subject credits you accumulate, which university degree programmes you qualify for, and how your Kenya Senior School Education Assessment (KSSEA) in Grade 12 is structured. Changing pathway after Grade 10 is possible in theory but practically disruptive — each pathway involves progressive skill-building, and entering mid-stream means gaps in foundational competencies. This is a decision that rewards careful thought now, not a correction made under pressure in Grade 11.

For a full breakdown of the KJSEA exam that feeds into placement, see our earlier article: KJSEA 2026: The Complete Grade 9 Parent Strategy.

The Core Structure: What Every Learner Studies

All learners — regardless of pathway — study the same four compulsory core subjects:

  • English
  • Kiswahili (or Kenyan Sign Language)
  • Community Service Learning (CSL)
  • Physical Education (PE)

In addition to these four cores, each learner chooses three elective subjects, with at least two drawn from their chosen pathway. The STEM pathway offers the option of Advanced Mathematics rather than the standard Essential Mathematics taken in other pathways — a critical distinction for students aiming at engineering, medicine, or actuarial science.

Pathway 1: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

STEM is the largest pathway by enrolment — approximately 59% of Grade 10 learners entered STEM when placements were issued for the 2026 cohort. It is structured around three internal tracks:

Pure Sciences Track

Subject combinations centre on Advanced Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This is the route for medicine, pharmacy, biochemistry, veterinary science, and academic research careers. Universities require strong scores in Biology-Chemistry-Mathematics combinations for health sciences entry.

Applied Sciences Track

Subjects include General Science, Agriculture, Computer Studies, and Home Science. This track suits learners heading toward agricultural economics, food science, nutrition, agribusiness, and ICT. Agriculture combined with Computer Studies is a rapidly growing combination given Kenya's agri-tech sector expansion.

Technical and Engineering Track

This track draws from the widest subject menu in the entire senior school system: Drawing and Design, Aviation Technology, Building and Construction, Electrical Technology, Metal Technology, Power Mechanics, Wood Technology, Media Technology, and Marine and Fisheries Technology. These subjects lead directly to degree programmes in engineering, architecture, aviation, maritime studies, and — critically — to TVET diplomas that lead to well-paying technical careers without requiring a university degree.

STEM Track Key Subjects Career Outcomes
Pure Sciences Advanced Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics Medicine, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Research
Applied Sciences Agriculture, Computer Studies, General Science, Home Science Agribusiness, ICT, Food Science, Nutrition
Technical & Engineering Electrical Technology, Building Construction, Aviation, Wood/Metal Technology Engineering, Architecture, Aviation, TVET Technician roles

What marks does STEM require? STEM at a C1 (National) school is highly competitive. The 2025 KJSEA results showed that learners placed into C1 STEM schools were predominantly in Level 6 (58–74%) and above on their blended score. C2 (Extra-County) STEM schools accommodated learners from Level 5 (41–57%) upward. Strong performance in Mathematics and Sciences during Grades 7 and 8 SBAs significantly supports STEM placement because SBA contributes 20% to the final score.

Pathway 2: Arts and Sports Science

Arts and Sports Science represents approximately 15% of pathway selections nationally, making it the smallest pathway by enrolment but by no means a lesser option. Kenya's creative economy — music, film, digital media, design — is growing, and the professional sports sector increasingly requires formally trained personnel at all levels, from athletes to coaches to sports administrators.

Arts Track

Subject options include Visual Arts, Performing Arts (covering Music, Dance, and Theatre), Fine Art, Applied Art, Crafts, and Time-Based Media (film and digital production). Learners in this track can supplement with Home Science, Computer Science, or a Foreign Language.

Sports Track

Subject options span Ball Games, Athletics, Indoor Games, Gymnastics, Water Sports, Boxing, Martial Arts, Outdoor Pursuits, and Advanced Physical Education. The science component embedded in Sports Science means learners engage with human physiology, nutrition, biomechanics, and sports psychology at a level that supports university entry into degree programmes in Sports Science, Physiotherapy, and Physical Education.

Arts & Sports Track Key Subjects Career Outcomes
Arts Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Fine Art, Media/Film, Applied Art Musician, Actor, Film Director, Graphic Designer, Content Creator, Art Teacher
Sports Science Athletics, Ball Games, Advanced PE, Gymnastics, Water Sports Professional Athlete, Sports Coach, Physiotherapist, Sports Administrator, PE Teacher

A common parental concern addressed: Many parents worry that Arts and Sports does not lead to stable employment. This misreads the Kenyan economy of 2026. Kenya's digital content industry is worth billions of shillings and absorbing skilled graduates faster than universities produce them. The pathway prepares learners for both university entry and direct entry into Kenya's growing creative and sporting economy.

Pathway 3: Social Sciences

Social Sciences accounts for approximately 25% of learner placements. It is Kenya's pathway for future lawyers, economists, business leaders, diplomats, teachers, journalists, public administrators, and social workers. It is structured around three tracks:

Humanities Track

Subjects include History and Citizenship, Geography, Christian Religious Education (CRE), Islamic Religious Education (IRE), and Hindu Religious Education (HRE). This is the natural route for students heading toward Law, Political Science, International Relations, Theology, and Social Work.

Business Studies Track

Centred on Business Studies and Mathematics (Essential level), this track targets students heading toward Commerce, Economics, Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, and Business Administration degrees.

Languages and Literature Track

Subject options include: Advanced English, Literature in English, Kiswahili Language, Fasihi ya Kiswahili, Kenyan Sign Language, Indigenous Languages, and foreign languages — Arabic, French, German, and Mandarin Chinese. This track is the natural home for students with strong literary aptitude, multilingual abilities, or ambitions in translation, diplomacy, journalism, or international business.

Social Sciences Track Key Subjects Career Outcomes
Humanities History & Citizenship, Geography, CRE/IRE/HRE Lawyer, Judge, Diplomat, Social Worker, Political Scientist, Teacher
Business Studies Business Studies, Mathematics (Essential) Accountant, Economist, Banker, Entrepreneur, Finance Analyst
Languages & Literature Literature in English, Fasihi ya Kiswahili, French, Arabic, German, Mandarin Journalist, Translator, Diplomat, Editor, Foreign Language Teacher, UN/AU careers

How the KJSEA Score Determines Your Pathway Placement

Component Weight When Assessed
Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) 60% Grade 9, October/November
Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) 20% Grade 6
School-Based Assessments (SBA) 20% Grades 7 and 8

KJSEA uses an eight-level achievement system:

  • Level 8 (EE1): 90–100% — Exceptional
  • Level 7 (EE2): 75–89% — Very Good
  • Level 6 (ME1): 58–74% — Good
  • Level 5 (ME2): 41–57% — Fair
  • Level 4 (AE1): 31–40% — Needs Improvement
  • Level 3 (AE2): 21–30% — Below Average
  • Level 2 (BE1): 11–20% — Well Below Average
  • Level 1 (BE2): 1–10% — Minimal

Stating a pathway preference does not guarantee placement in that pathway — a learner who selects STEM but scores below the threshold for available STEM schools in their sub-county may be placed in a Social Sciences school instead. This is why maximising the KJSEA score matters enormously.

How Schools Are Categorised

  • C1 — National Schools (204 schools): Offer all three pathways. Most competitive placements requiring the highest blended scores.
  • C2 — Extra-County Schools (692 schools): Most offer two pathways. Must include STEM plus either Social Sciences or Arts and Sports.
  • C3 — County Schools (1,373 schools): Typically one or two pathways. Placement is county-based.
  • C4 — Sub-County Schools (7,234 schools): Free day education. Most offer a single pathway. Every learner is guaranteed placement at this level.

A critical practical point: if your preferred pathway is Arts and Sports Science, check which schools in your county actually offer it. Because it is the smallest pathway, fewer C3 and C4 schools are equipped to deliver it.

What Parents and Grade 9 Students Must Do Before 30 June 2026

  1. Confirm your child's KJSEA results are correctly recorded on the selection platform at selection.education.go.ke.
  2. Request the full SBA record from Grades 7 and 8 from the school to understand genuine academic strengths.
  3. Attend the career guidance sessions at school. KNEC's interest inventory questionnaires are administered at school level — do not let your child miss these.
  4. Research school pathway availability in your county before forming preferences.
  5. List four school preferences — not one. Use all four slots on the platform, ordered realistically from most to least competitive.
  6. Submit subject combinations on selection.education.go.ke before 30 June 2026. Late submission means placement without stated preferences.
  7. Have a frank conversation about Advanced Mathematics if targeting STEM Pure Sciences. Learners who arrive underprepared in Mathematics have higher attrition rates in Grade 10 STEM schools.

A Note on Flexibility

The CBC framework allows pathway transfers after Grade 10, but treat this as a contingency, not a plan. A learner who moves from STEM to Social Sciences mid-stream misses foundational Grade 10 content. Universities reviewing Grade 12 KSSEA transcripts will see a mixed pathway record that may complicate meeting specific degree entry requirements. Make a deliberate choice now with a clear rationale.

Prepare Your Child to Compete

Whatever pathway your family selects, KJSEA performance is the primary determinant of which school tier your child accesses. Integrated Science and Mathematics are the subjects most heavily weighted in STEM pathway consideration. Business Studies and History and Citizenship matter for Social Sciences. Strong English and Kiswahili results support every pathway.
