Complete Guide to CBC (now CBE) Grade 7 Subjects in Kenya (2026)

Everything parents and teachers need to know about Junior Secondary. We break down all 13 learning areas, what your child will study each term, and how to get the right revision materials.

Complete Guide to CBC (now CBE) Grade 7 Subjects in Kenya (2026)

Grade 7 is one of the most important transitions in a Kenyan learner's education. Under the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC (now CBE)), it marks the beginning of Junior Secondary School β€” a brand-new phase that replaced the old Standard 7 under 8-4-4.

If you are a parent trying to understand what your child will study, a teacher looking for KICD-aligned materials, or a learner preparing for the year ahead, this guide covers everything you need to know.

Quick Summary: Grade 7 has 13 learning areas, 3 terms per year, and uses Competency-Based Assessment (CBA). No KCPE-style exams β€” assessment includes continuous observation, projects, and end-of-term papers marked using rubrics.

What Is Junior Secondary Under CBC (now CBE)?

Kenya's CBC (now CBE) system replaced the 8-4-4 system that ran from 1985 to 2022. Under CBC (now CBE):

  • Pre-Primary: PP1 and PP2 (ages 4–6)
  • Lower Primary: Grade 1–3 (ages 6–9)
  • Upper Primary: Grade 4–6 (ages 9–12)
  • Junior Secondary: Grade 7–9 (ages 12–15)
  • Senior Secondary: Grade 10–12 (ages 15–18)

Grade 7 is the first year of Junior Secondary. The school year runs three terms: January–April (Term 1), May–August (Term 2), and September–November (Term 3). Each term ends with a formal end-of-term assessment paper plus continuous portfolio and project-based assessment.

The 13 CBC (now CBE) Grade 7 Learning Areas

Unlike the old Standard 7 which had roughly 8 subjects, CBC (now CBE) Grade 7 has 13 learning areas. Here is a complete breakdown of each:

1. English

English covers five strands: Listening & Speaking, Reading, Writing, Grammar in Use, and Literature. Learners read set texts (novels and poems), write essays, practise formal and informal communication, and develop critical analysis skills.

Term 1 focus areas: Comprehension skills, essay writing, grammar (tenses, reported speech), introduction to set book.

2. Kiswahili / KSL

Taught as a first or second language. Key strands: Kusikiliza na Kuzungumza (Listening & Speaking), Kusoma (Reading), Kuandika (Writing), Sarufi (Grammar), and Fasihi (Literature). KSL (Kenya Sign Language) is offered as an alternative for learners with hearing impairments.

3. Mathematics

One of the most demanding subjects. Strands: Numbers, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Handling & Probability.

Key topics: Integers, fractions, decimals, linear equations, properties of triangles, area and perimeter, data collection and frequency tables.

Every term exam includes Section A (objective), Section B (short answer), and Section C (problem-solving with working shown).

4. Integrated Science

Combines Biology, Chemistry, and Physics concepts. Strands: Scientific Investigation, Living Things & Their Environment, Matter, Energy, and Earth & the Solar System.

Practical component: Learners conduct simple experiments (e.g., testing for starch, measuring force). Practical skills are assessed separately using a rubric.

5. Health Education

Covers personal hygiene, nutrition, community health, first aid, and reproductive health (age-appropriate). Often underestimated but examined at end of term. Strands include Personal Health, Community Health, and Sexuality Education.

6. Pre-Technical Studies

Introduces learners to technical subjects they may choose in Senior Secondary. Covers basic woodwork, metalwork, electricity basics, and technical drawing. Practical assessment is a major component β€” learners make simple wooden or metal items and are assessed on craftsmanship, safety, and design.

7. Social Studies

Covers Kenyan society, governance, natural resources, trade, and regional/global connections. Strands: People & Population, Governance & Citizenship, Natural Resources, Trade & Commerce, and Culture & Heritage.

8. Religious Education

Offered in three variants β€” CRE (Christian Religious Education), IRE (Islamic Religious Education), or HRE (Hindu Religious Education). Learners take the one that applies to their faith background. All three share strands on moral values, faith practice, and community responsibility.

9. Business Studies

A new addition at Junior Secondary level. Introduces entrepreneurship, basic accounting, marketing, and business ethics. Strands: Business Environment, Trade, and Entrepreneurship. Very practical β€” learners design mini business plans and pitch ideas.

10. Agriculture

Covers crop husbandry, animal husbandry, farm structures, and soil science. Has a strong practical component β€” most schools have school farms where learners plant, tend, and harvest crops as part of their continuous assessment.

11. Life Skills Education

One of CBC (now CBE)'s most important innovations. Covers self-awareness, decision-making, communication, peer relationships, and coping with stress. Assessment is portfolio-based β€” no traditional written exams. Learners keep a journal of reflections and activities.

12. Sports & Physical Education

Covers athletics, ball games, gymnastics, and swimming (where facilities allow). Assessment is practical β€” observation of skills, teamwork, and attitude. Learners are assessed on performance, not just results.

13. Optional Subject

Schools may offer one optional subject based on their resources and expertise. Common choices include: Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Home Science, Computer Science, or a Foreign Language (French, German, Mandarin). Learners and parents should check with their specific school what optional subject is offered.

How Grade 7 Is Assessed (CBA)

This is where CBC (now CBE) is most different from 8-4-4. Instead of one high-stakes exam per year, Grade 7 uses Competency-Based Assessment (CBA):

LevelCodeWhat It Means
Exceeding ExpectationsEEApplies knowledge in new contexts; shows creativity beyond grade level
Meeting ExpectationsMEDemonstrates clear understanding; meets all learning outcomes for the strand
Approaching ExpectationsAEPartial understanding; meets some outcomes with guidance
Below ExpectationsBERequires significant support; does not yet meet minimum outcomes

At the end of Grade 9, learners sit the Kenya Junior School Assessment (KJSA) β€” the new national exam that replaced KCPE. Results determine placement into Senior Secondary pathways.

The 7 Core Competencies

Every learning area in Grade 7 develops these seven competencies that KICD has identified as essential for 21st-century life:

  1. Communication and Collaboration
  2. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  3. Creativity and Imagination
  4. Citizenship
  5. Digital Literacy
  6. Learning to Learn
  7. Self-Efficacy

What Your Child Needs to Succeed in Grade 7

The single biggest challenge teachers and parents report is the lack of quality revision materials. The KICD curriculum designs set out what must be taught, but ready-made notes, schemes of work, and exam papers are not automatically provided by the government.

Every Grade 7 learner should have access to:

  • Topic-by-topic lesson notes aligned to KICD strands and sub-strands
  • End-of-term exam papers with marking schemes (for practice)
  • CBA assessment rubrics so they know exactly what they are being marked on
  • Teacher-prepared schemes of work that cover all 13 learning areas across 3 terms

"The greatest challenge in CBC (now CBE) implementation is not willingness β€” it is the absence of affordable, well-structured learning materials that teachers and parents can actually use."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Grade 7 the same as what used to be Standard 7?

No. Standard 7 was part of the 8-4-4 primary school system. Grade 7 under CBC (now CBE) is the first year of Junior Secondary β€” a new school phase. Many schools have had to physically accommodate Junior Secondary learners who were previously not part of secondary school structures.

Does my child sit KCPE at the end of Grade 7?

No. KCPE has been abolished. The national exam is now the Kenya Junior School Assessment (KJSA), sat at the end of Grade 9 (not Grade 6 or Grade 7).

How long is each term in Grade 7?

Each term is approximately 13–14 weeks. The Ministry of Education publishes the official school calendar annually. In 2026: Term 1 runs 5 January to 3 April (13 weeks), Term 2 runs 27 April to 31 July (14 weeks), and Term 3 runs 24 August to 27 November (14 weeks), with national exams from 26 October to 20 November.

What happens if my child scores BE in a subject?

BE (Below Expectations) means the learner needs additional support in that learning area. Unlike the old system, a single low mark does not define a learner's future. Teachers are expected to provide remediation activities. If your child consistently scores BE in Maths, for example, targeted practice using past papers and extra notes can make a significant difference.

Summary

Grade 7 under CBC (now CBE) is a new and exciting phase of Kenyan education. With 13 learning areas, competency-based assessment, and a focus on developing real-world skills, it is designed to produce well-rounded graduates. The key for both parents and teachers is to understand what is expected in each learning area and ensure learners have quality, KICD-aligned materials to work with.
