A quick story about your great-grandparents
In 1950, your great-grandparents in Kenya may have worked as farmers, traders, or in small trades like blacksmithing. No one back then had a job called "Software Engineer" or "Data Scientist" or "Social Media Manager." Those words didn't exist. Those jobs didn't exist.
Today, Kenya's top-paying jobs include ones nobody predicted 30 years ago: mobile money engineer, cybersecurity analyst, fintech founder, M-Pesa risk manager, climate-tech researcher.
Now fast-forward. When YOU are 30 years old, the year will be around 2040-2045. Many of the biggest jobs you'll have will be ones that don't exist today. AI is one of the main reasons why.
Three types of jobs — where AI fits
🟥 Jobs AI will mostly do alone (sorry — they're going away)
- Writing simple emails and reports
- Basic data entry
- Simple customer-service answers (the chatbot replies)
- Low-skill translation
- Basic image editing
If your dream job is one of these, it's worth learning something more skilled. AI does this work faster and cheaper.
🟨 Jobs AI helps humans do better (many of your jobs will be these)
- Doctors using AI to read X-rays
- Teachers using AI to create lesson plans
- Lawyers using AI to research case law
- Writers using AI to draft, then editing in their own voice
- Farmers using AI to diagnose crops (like Nuru)
In these jobs, the human stays in charge. AI is a super-powered assistant. The humans who USE AI well will earn much more than humans who don't.
🟩 Jobs humans will do — AI can't really help (these are future-proof)
- Counsellor, therapist — people need humans when they're hurting
- Teacher of young children — you can't replace a loving adult
- Nurse, physiotherapist — physical care of other humans
- Creative director, storyteller, artist (with their own vision)
- Pastor, imam, elder — spiritual and community leadership
- Electrician, plumber, mechanic — physical problem-solving in the real world
- Entrepreneur — someone has to decide WHAT to build
New jobs AI is creating
These jobs didn't exist 5 years ago. By the time you finish school, they'll be everywhere:
- 🧠 AI Prompt Engineer — expert at talking to AI to get great results
- 🤖 AI Ethicist — makes sure AI treats everyone fairly
- 📊 AI Data Curator — makes sure AI learns from good, fair examples
- 🛡️ AI Safety Researcher — makes sure AI doesn't do harmful things
- 🎨 AI Creative Director — uses AI to make new art, films, music
- 🇰🇪 Kenyan-AI Specialist — builds AI that understands Kiswahili, Kenyan contexts, local needs
What you should do right now (as a kid)
- Get really good at talking to AI. Prompt engineering is becoming as important as reading and writing.
- Develop a "human superpower." Something AI can't do well — leadership, empathy, hands-on craft, creative vision, physical skills.
- Stay curious. The kids who succeed in 2040 will be lifelong learners. The world keeps changing.
- Think Kenyan. There's a huge opportunity building AI that actually serves Kenyan and African needs — because global companies don't really understand us.
The most important thing
AI is NOT going to replace humans. AI is going to replace humans who don't use AI, with humans who do. You are learning to use AI right now. That puts you ahead of most kids in the world. Not just Kenya — everywhere.
Talk together. What is one job in your family that AI might change in the next 10 years? What is one job it probably won't change? Write them down. Save this paper — read it again when you're 18. See if you were right.
